BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The first seven companies applying for listing on the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), a Nasdaq-alike market in China, have got green lights from the country's securities regulator on Thursday.     They are in the fields of software, medical equipment and medicines. They planned to raise 2.27 billion yuan (332.65 million U.S. dollars), from the IPOs, according to China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC).     "This means the seven enterprises are eligible to list on the market, but they still have some flaws in information issuance, which need to be improved," said Jiang Xinhong, a member of the review commission.     The flaws don't hinder the listings, but these enterprises should go through some necessary procedures before getting listed, said the CSRC.     The CSRC had received 155 applications for IPOs on the GEM as of Sept. 10, since it started to accept applications of the GEM on July 26.

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday stressed the growing of autumn and winter crops at an executive meeting of the State Council.     The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council would continue to strengthen the fundamental status of agriculture and boost the support for agriculture and grain output, according to the meeting.     All provincial areas and departments should put into practice the central government's policies, especially policies for the benefits of farmers, according to the meeting.     Despite uncommon droughts and the global economic recession, China was expected to have a big harvest this year, underpinning the country's stable and fast economic growth, according to the meeting.     Although China reported grain output increase for continuous years, the relationship between grain demand and supply would be strained in the long run as China's infrastructure for grain output was not stable, the grain planting efficiency was relatively low and natural disasters were frequent, according to the meeting.     Autumn and winter planting was key to next summer's harvest and even next year's harvest and measures should be taken to promote grain output, according to the meeting.     The measures should include promoting subsidy policies and stabilizing autumn and winter planting acreage, stabilizing market prices to protect farmers' interests and promoting technology services for farmers, according to the meeting.

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Fifty-two types of new weapon systems developed with China's own technologies, including airborne early warning and control (AEWC) aircraft, will be showcased at the military parade celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China.     Further cutting-edge weaponry would include sophisticated radar, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and satellite communication devices of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Lieutenant General Fang Fenghui, general director of the parade, told Xinhua Wednesday.     The Oct. 1 parade would also show personnel and equipment from the navy, air force and China's ballistic missile corps, Fang said.     Fang did not identify the specific models of the weapon systems but said all of the weapons are tagged: "Made in China".     "They (the weapon systems) embody the ongoing transformation of the PLA from a labor-intensive force to technology-intensive might be capable of joint operations in modern warfare," said Fang, who is also commander of the PLA's Beijing Military Area Command.     "The weapon systems to be shown in the parade also showcase the ability of the PLA to carry out diverse military missions," he said.     There will be 56 regiments on the ground and in the air during the parade, symbolizing the country's 56 ethnic groups marching along the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics in solidarity, Fang said.     Fourteen of the regiments will march through Chang'an Avenue on foot, 30 in wheeled transport and 12 will take to the air.     All the troops in the parade will be dressed in PLA 07-type uniforms and most of them are from generations born in the 1980s and 1990s.     Compared with the previous military parade on National Day 10 years ago, this one would have less troops and equipment but increased high-tech weaponry and special force units, Fang said.

LANZHOU, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has written a congratulatory letter to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Lanzhou University in northwest China's Gansu Province.     The university has been sticking to its motto of making constant efforts to become stronger and fostering its own features, and has developed glorious patriotic and academic traditions, Hu said in the letter.     After the founding of New China and particularly the country's reform and opening up, Lanzhou University has shared the fate of the nation and kept pace with the times, and made important contribution to the economic and social development in the western regions, the president said.     He expected the university to contribute more to supporting the national program of developing the western regions, building an innovation-oriented country and a moderately prosperous society in all aspects, and stepping up the socialist modernization drive.     A grand gathering was held Saturday to commemorate the centenary of the university. BEIJING, Aug. 17 -- Just on Saturday night, police in South China's Guangdong province caught 1,162 drink drivers and 78 drunk drivers. Each was punished and all the drunk drivers were taken into custody. Similar checks and arrests were also made in other cities over the weekend.    Saturday was the first day of a two-month-long nationwide campaign launched by the Ministry of Public Security to crack down on drink and drunk driving, after several recent cases in Nanjing, Hangzhou, Chengdu and Shanghai triggered huge media attention and public indignation.     Although many feel that more innocent lives could have been saved if the crackdown had been initiated earlier, they still pin high hopes on this crusade to wipe out the rampant drink and drunk driving and other reckless driving on our roads. With three percent of the total vehicles in the world, the country accounts for 16 percent of the global traffic deaths.     So the announcement by the Ministry of Public Security last Friday to mete out the toughest punishment to violators is a move in the right direction. It is a move to protect the lives of other people as well as of the drink and drunk drivers themselves.     Of course, this is not the first time that the police force has decided to strike out against DUI. Three campaigns were already held earlier this year. Yet the fact that this phenomenon is still so widespread on our roads shows the need for better strategies.     First, our laws should be made tougher to show zero tolerance to such murderous driving. Many countries, such as the United States, Sweden and Singapore, have stricter punishment for DUI.     Second, police officers should enforce the law at all times and in all places, leaving no gaps of which violators can take advantage. Crackdown on DUI is not something that should be carried out for only two months or for the 60th National Day. It should stay as long as there's dangerous driving on our roads.     Third, while laws and punishments are necessary, we should start educating our population about the threat of DUI on others' lives. While drivers should restrain themselves, our drinking culture, which often means endless rounds of bottoms-up, needs to be checked.     Each year traffic accidents take away more lives in China than any other mishap. An all-out war on drink and drunk driving and other forms of rash driving should definitely be a national priority.
