After serving nearly 28 years in prison, a Philadelphia man was freed after authorities publicly acknowledged that police and prosecutors had evidence that pointed to other suspects.Chester Hollman III, 48, was released Monday from a state prison in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Gwendolyn N. Bright had ruled that Hollman was "likely innocent" of the 1991 killing of Tae Jung Ho."I don't think it's really hit me yet still. Just this morning, I learned that this was happening. I'm still a little in shock, disbelief," Hollman told 582
Alaska's heat wave continued through Independence Day, and in Anchorage, the temperatures shattered an all-time record. The temperature at the airport was 90 degrees Thursday, beating June 14, 1969, for the highest mark ever reached in the state, according to the National Weather Service.Across south Alaska, the mercury was expected to rise to record or near-record levels on the nation's 243rd birthday and continue at above-average levels through next week, the 477
Actor Cuba Gooding Jr.'s sex abuse trial is set to begin Tuesday with jury selection in New York City.Gooding is charged with forcible touching, a misdemeanor, and sex abuse in the third degree related to an alleged groping incident in June.A 29-year-old woman filed a police report claiming Gooding grabbed her breast at Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge in Manhattan.Gooding has denied the claim. The actor voluntarily surrendered to New York police for questioning in June and was released on his own recognizance. The woman in the alleged incident told police she was with friends when she was confronted by a male patron whom she described as Gooding, a law enforcement source told CNN."The male allegedly groped her breasts," the source said. "The victim later told cops she protested at the unwanted touching and they argued about the encounter."The woman left the bar and called 911 to report the alleged incident, the law enforcement source said, and NYPD Manhattan Special Victims Squad investigated.Gooding's attorney has said video footage taken at the bar that night will clear his client."There is not a scintilla of criminal culpability that can be attributed to Mr. Cuba Gooding Jr. after I have extensively, with my staff, reviewed the video of almost two hours which reflects the entire event," Mark Heller told reporters in June."I am totally confident that when a jury of Cuba Gooding Jr.'s peers assess all of the exculpatory evidence in this case, that he will be totally exonerated," Heller added last month. 1543
Alabama Public Television says it won't air an episode of the children's show "Arthur" that featured a same-sex marriage."Mr. Ratburn and the Special Someone" aired as the premiere for the show's 22nd season on May 13. But not in Alabama.Programming director Mike McKenzie says Alabama Public Television has no plans to broadcast the episode. The storyline about Mr. Ratburn's marriage conveys a positive message, he said. But while many parents will find it appropriate, many others will disagree, he said -- "either because their children are too young, or because of their beliefs.""Our broadcast would take away the choice of parents who feel it is inappropriate," McKenzie told CNN in a statement. The response to the decisionCNN has reached out to WGBH, which produces the series, and is waiting to hear back. PBS told CNN that its local channels decide what to put on the air in their markets."PBS Kids programs are designed to reflect the diversity of communities across the nation," PBS Kids' Maria Vera Whelan told CNN. "We believe it is important to represent the wide array of adults in the lives of children who look to PBS Kids every day."The show's creator told CNN he felt like the episode was a responsibility they had with Arthur.Mark Brown cited his friend Fred Rogers, better known as Mr. Rogers, who taught him how television could be used to help children in families."So many of us have have family or friends who are gay who are not represented in the media," Brown says. "We have people in our family that are gay and raising children and looking for things to validate their families."The ceremony is a literal wink and nodThe episode doesn't specifically address Ratburn's sexuality or show a marriage ceremony."Who is Mr. Ratburn marrying?" Muffie, one of the character, asks. The scene then cuts to Mr. Ratburn, their third-grade teacher walking down the aisle with Patrick, a chocolate maker. Patrick simply answers the children with a wink.To see the episode for yourself, view the episode by clicking 2046
