BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the ruling Forces pour la Defense de la Democratie (FDD) of Burundi said Tuesday the FDD hopes to strengthen cooperation with the Communist Party of China (CPC) and to further enhance the "brotherly friendship" with the CPC.Mohamed Rukara, vice president of the Council of Elders, the top decision-making body of the FDD, said in an interview with Xinhua that there are a lot of ruling experiences of CPC that the FDD can learn from.He said the CPC has gained great achievements in China's reform and opening up, realizing sustainable development, developing science and technology and striking corruption. He said Burundi has set "sustainable development" as the slogan for the 2010-2015 period, and he believed that his country can learn from China's successful experiences of reform and opening up and realize the goal of shaking off poverty by 2020-2025.Rukara, who is also a ombudsman, said corruption has been a big challenge facing his country, and he believed the FDD can learn from the CPC in this regard, as the latter has been combating corruption very hard and effectively.Appreciating China's aid and contribution to the development of Burundi, Rukara said the two parties and the two countries have had very good relations based on mutual respect. He welcomed more Chinese enterprises to invest in Burundi to support its development, and "the door will always be open to our brother."At the invitation of the CPC, Rukara is heading an FDD delegation for a visit to China starting from Saturday.

ABU DHABI, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- China is willing to deepen friendship, broaden cooperation, and enhance coordination with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in international and regional affairs, visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Thursday.During a meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Yang said China and the UAE have witnessed in recent years rapid development in their bilateral ties, with closer high-level contacts, increasingly strengthened mutual political trust, fruitful cooperation in such areas as trade and economy, and broadened cultural exchanges.China has praised the UAE's support in Xinjiang-related and human rights issues, he added. For his part, Sheikh Mohammed said the UAE-China relations are currently at an important period of in-depth development and faced with good opportunities. The UAE attaches great importance to its relations with China and hopes to cement the traditional friendship between the two countries and develop pragmatic cooperation in various fields, he added.Sheikh Mohammed said the UAE expects that China will continue to play a positive role in international and regional affairs.Earlier in the day, Yang also met with his UAE counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Both sides reached broad consensus after exchanging views on bilateral ties and regional issues of common concern. The Chinese foreign minister arrived in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi late Wednesday for an official visit to the Gulf nation.

SHANGHAI, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai and several other Chinese cities have moved to restrict home purchases in a bid to deflate bubbles in the real estate market. The rules, which were revealed by Shanghai's Housing Guarantee and Administration Bureau on Saturday, prohibits new home purchases from locally-registered families who have owned two or more homes and non-local registered families who have owned at least one home.Additionally, non-Shanghai registered families who have no documents certifying they have paid for social security or income tax in the city for one year are banned from buying property.Sales of commercial homes fell 42.4 percent year on year in Shanghai in 2010 as earlier measures to curb the speculative demand in the real estate market took effect.Despite the fall in sales volume, the average price of new commercial homes rose by 7.6 percent to 20,995 yuan (3,200 U.S. dollars) per square meter last year.On the same day, authorities in the eastern city of Nanjing and the northeastern city of Harbin rolled out similar purchase restrictions. On Wednesday, the Beijing municipal government unveiled even tougher measures to prohibit home purchases from non-local registered families who have no proof of social security or income tax payments in the Chinese capital for five straight years. The purchase limits came after the State Council, China's Cabinet, ordered late last month that cities where home prices are skyrocketing must implement strict measures to restrict home purchases over a period of time. The State Council also said that local governments will be responsible for the stable and healthy growth of property markets and are required to publicize, before the end of March, the annual "controlled" price targets for new homes.China has implemented a series of measures since last year, which includes higher down payment and lending rates, and bans on mortgage loans for third homes, to rein in the rapid rise in housing prices.Soaring prices have become a major concern for urban Chinese residents as more homes turn unaffordable. In fact, home prices in some major cities such as Beijing have more than doubled over the past two years.

CANBERRA, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Australian Health Minister Nicola Roxon on Thursday night said she will not be frightened off by the tobacco industry's attempt to lobby Malaysia to oppose the Australian government's proposal for plain packaging of cigarettes.According to ABC News, big tobacco companies have appointed a former United States ambassador to the World Trade Organization ( WTO), Peter Allgeier, to help them fight the Australian federal government's plain packaging plan, which is due to come into effect this year.An email sent to a Malaysian official and obtained by ABC News showed that Allgeier had a meeting with Malaysia's trade minister before, and he has been lobbying a Malaysian administrator to put pressure on Australia over plain packaging.Allgeier's email also stated that "members of the U.S. congress also have written to the Australian Government outlining concerns about the implications of plain packaging for the integrity of Australia's trade commitments."However, Roxon, who said she has not been approached by Malaysia on the issue, said Allgeier's appointment demonstrated just how far big tobacco is prepared to take its fight."But we won't be frightened off because big tobacco is hiring lobbyists or looking at ways to influence the action we're taking, " she told ABC television on Thursday night. The tobacco industry has already spent millions fighting plain packaging, and last year gave 5.2 million U.S. dollars to the Alliance of Australian Retailers (AAR) to fund an advertising campaign against the plan.If the cigarettes law is enforced, Australia will become the first country in the world to ban logos and brand names from cigarette packaging. Health warnings and the kind of graphic pictures will make up the majority of the packaging, while the rest of the packets will be plain olive green.
