Puff. Puff. Cash. That is what some in the marijuana tourism industry are betting on. “We’ve grabbed a larger section of the mainstream, so now we’ve grabbed the canna-curious,” said CEO of Colorado Cannibs Tours Michael Eymer. Now that recreational marijuana Is legal in 10 states and the District of Columbia, businesses like Eymer’s are sprouting up like weeds.Eymer’s company takes customers on tours of dispensaries and grow houses in the Denver area.“Where we’re at with this whole thing, my company and models like this, I really, firmly feel, it’s simply just the tip of the iceberg in how big this industry can be. You know, I feel that this industry can be as as the public, or social consumption of alcohol.”But these businesses are operating in a bit of a gray area, and it’s not always a smooth ride. "There was a misunderstanding a little over a year ago with the city of Denver, where we had some of our guests and our guides, ticketed, by the city for what they considered to be public consumption,” said Eymer. While pot is legal to possess, sell and consume across the state of Colorado, you still can’t smoke it in public. That became an issue last year, when a Colorado cannabis tours bus got pulled over by Denver police."We do have rules though, where you can legally consume marijuana and where you legally cannot consume marijuana," said Eric Escudero, a spokesperson for the Denver Department of Excise and Licenses. That’s just one of the hurdles different states are facing with the legalization of medical pot.“When the first slate of licenses were granted, it did not include social consumption or delivery,” said Shanel Lindsay who founded Ardent Cannabis.Lindsay is trying to make sure they don’t have the same kind of hiccups in Massachusetts.“I think it’s really important for states, when they’re, when they’re making these laws to make sure there’s a clear pathway for social consumption and delivery, when they’re writing the law," said Lindsay.Massachusetts voted to legalize recreational pot in 2016.The first stores to sell it didn’t open until last year, and the state is still working on the rules for cannabis consumption businesses.“We’ve always had private or underground social consumption events and you definitely still see people running social consumption events in a private way. But really what people want is the ability to legitimately run public events.”Like in California. The popular music festival “Outside Lands” in San Francisco includes an entire area called “grasslands,” where people can buy and smoke weed in an open-air setting.“I came last year and we weren’t able to buy weed, so I was super happy I was able to get a pre-roll," said one concert-goer.Back in Colorado, Eymer worked on passing a state law that will allow for licensing of all kinds of marijuana businesses. He says giving users and sellers that stress free feeling is why he does what he does. 2932

Students attending a vigil following a shooting at a school near Denver shouted "mental health" and stormed out of the event to protest politicians.Attendees walked out and chanted after Sen. Michael Bennet and Congressman Jason Crow spoke at the vigil Wednesday evening at Highlands Ranch High School, The Denver Post reported. It said several hundred students were at the vigil that went from a peaceful event to a demonstration, and included protests against the media and politicians. The students returned to the vigil held inside the gym, it said. The two suspects accused of carrying out a mass shooting at a Denver-area charter school made their first appearances in court Wednesday.Neither of the suspects -- 18-year-old student Devon Erickson and 16-year-old Alec McKinney -- were formally charged.Eighteen-year-old Kendrick Ray Castillo was killed and eight others were wounded in the shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch. First-degree murder and attempted murder charges will be filed, said 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler. He said he wants time to consider other charges.Erickson took the two handguns used in the shooting from his parents, according to a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the investigation. Both guns were purchased legally, the source said. Both suspects are scheduled to appear separately in court again on Friday afternoon.Erickson spent most of his hearing Wednesday with his head bowed, his bushy head of hair -- colored with streaks of purple -- obscuring his face. He spoke only when spoken to directly by the judge, and at one point signed a court document while holding his handcuffed wrists in front of him.Prosecutors have not decided whether they will seek to try the 16-year-old suspect as an adult, Brauchler told reporters.Authorities initially referred to the 16-year-old suspect as female. But the suspect's lawyer said in court that McKinney goes by the first name Alec, and uses the pronoun "he," Colorado Judicial Department spokesman Rob McCallum said.Brendan Bialy, a student who helped disarm one of the suspects, said he knows both alleged shooters. Erickson was a student in his class, where another student was killed and several were wounded, he said.Hero student is a "legend"Bialy wants people to remember Castillo as a "legend."The two were sitting by a classroom door when someone from their class arrived late and took out a gun, he said. Castillo immediately rushed him."It was immediate, nonhesitation, immediate jump into action," Bialy said of Castillo's reaction. "The gunman was there and then he was against the wall and didn't know what the hell hit him."Bialy and a third student joined in and wrestled with the shooter, who may have fired once or twice more during the struggle, Bialy said.Once he got the gun away and the other student had the shooter pinned down, Bialy went over to Castillo, who was unresponsive. Castillo died at the school. He was a kind, hilarious jokester who was always ready to help his classmates, student Tuscany "Nui" Giasolli said.Nui's mother, Nyki Giasolli, said if not for the heroism of her daughter's classmates, "I wouldn't have my baby today.""All these kids are alive because of (Castillo's) sacrifice and the bravery of all the boys to neutralize the threat," Giasolli said. But across town, Castillo's parents are mourning.A father's mixed emotions after losing his only childAt his home in Denver, John Castillo struggles to stop sobbing. He's torn between pride and anguish after the heroics of his only child."Selfless -- that's what my son was. And it got him killed. But he saved others," the father said."Because of what he did, others are alive, and I thank God for that. ... But there's another part of you that wishes he just turned and ran, retreated, hid."Like many parents, John Castillo waited at a reunification center Tuesday for buses to drop off survivors. One by one, he watched parents and children embrace with relief."We didn't have that," he said. But he takes solace in knowing other children are alive because of Kendrick.More than 1,850 students attend the STEM school, 4147

Suzanne Eaton, the American scientist killed in Greece, was raped, police in Crete said Tuesday.Police said Monday that a 27-year-old local man had confessed to the crime. The suspect said in his confession that he had seen Eaton running, and "with sexual assault as a probable motive, hit her twice with his car in order to immobilize her," Crete's Chief of Police Konstantinos Lagoudakis said at a press conference Tuesday."Then, after she was unconscious, he put her in the trunk of his car and took her to the location of the World War II bunker" where her body was found, Lagoudakis said. The suspect raped her and dumped her body into the bunker, covering the opening of the bunker's air shaft with a piece of wood to hide it, Crete Police's head of press Eleni Papathanassiou told CNN.It is not clear if Eaton was still alive when she was raped, she said.Wheel tracks lead officers to the suspect, police said, explaining that they had linked tracks found near the bunker to his car, which, they say, he cleaned after the attack on Eaton.During preliminary questioning, the suspect denied having been near the bunker for a month, which raised suspicions, Lagoudakis said.Signals from the suspect's phone also placed him near the crime scene on the day of the attack, the police chief said.Police say the suspect is a married father of two who owns farmland near the crime scene. They have not named him.The suspect said he had never met Eaton but had seen her running before, police said.Eaton, 59, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute at Dresden University in Germany, was in Crete for a conference when she disappeared. Her body was found a week later.A mother-of-two, she usually ran for 30 minutes every day, according to the "Searching for Suzanne" Facebook page set up when she went missing. 1817
