The number of eligible Latino voters has never been as high as it is now. According to a Pew Research study 32 million Latinos could cast a ballot in this election. However, there is a sentiment among many Latino voters that their vote won’t make a difference. Dora Ramirez, of El Paso, Texas, tells me she is sick and tired of issues facing the Latino community not being addressed by politicians. “We bring money into the economy, we work in the economy. People would not have strawberries or lettuce or avocados if people did not go out and work, and yet they are dismissing us as if we are nothing," said Ramirez.In an effort to engage voters, volunteers were out at a local food pantry. Every person driving up for food is asked if they are registered to vote and if they know where to drop off their ballot. Many have described the Latino vote as a “sleeping giant." A Pew Research study is showing the “sleeping giant” could come to life during this election showing there are 5.6 million registered Latino voters in Texas, 7.9 million in California, 3.1 million in Florida, 2 million in New York and more than a million in Arizona. Latino voters in Texas could potentially turn it into a swing state.Beto O’Rourke and his team from Powered By The People are ramping up their efforts to get people to register to vote. O’Rourke says he has heard from many Latino voters that they don’t feel included by political parties and will not vote, but a group that he is seeing become quite active is the younger Latino community. “Those young people, I believe, are not only going to vote in record numbers, but they are getting their folks and their grandparents and the people in their lives to vote as well," said O’Rourke.Miranda Escobar Gregory is one of those young Latinos. At 20 years old, this will be her first time voting. “I know that I now have more of a voice than I did 2 years ago," said Escobar Gregory. Born and raised in El Paso, as a first-generation Mexican American she faces some unique challenges in adapting her own political believes and still respecting those of her conservative upbringing. “If we have a strong presence in this country, why are we not using our voice to represent us and letting other people do it for us," said Escobar Gregory.Escobar Gregory is one of the more than 3 million registered young Latino voters, a group many believe will show up in record numbers during this election. 2437

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted many facets of our lives, and the holidays are no exception: More than two-thirds (68%) of Americans who had December holiday travel plans say these plans have been affected by the pandemic, according to a new NerdWallet survey. Another 22% say they aren’t sure yet if their plans will be impacted.In the NerdWallet survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults conducted online by The Harris Poll, we asked how their December holiday travel plans have been affected by the pandemic. Of those still traveling for the holidays in December — referred to as “holiday travelers” throughout — we also asked about planned primary lodging and transportation.Key findingsCOVID-19 will keep many from loved ones: Among Americans who say their December holiday travel plans have been impacted by the pandemic, 2 in 5 (40%) say they usually travel with or visit friends and family, but this year they won’t. Additionally, 27% usually drive out of town but won’t this year, and 17% say the same about flying somewhere during the holiday season.Far fewer Americans plan to travel this year: Just 24% of Americans plan to travel out of town for the December holiday season in 2020, compared with 75% who did so in 2019. An additional 17% aren’t sure yet if they’ll travel for the holidays this year.Travelers opt to stay closer to home: Of those planning to travel out of town this year for the December holidays, more than half (56%) say their plans were impacted by COVID-19. A quarter of those affected (25%) say while they usually travel farther from home, this year they’ll stay closer.Most holiday travelers plan to drive: Driving is the most popular primary mode of transportation (68%) for 2020 holiday travelers. This is down from 81% for 2019 holiday travel.Staying with loved ones is still the most popular lodging option: About 2 in 5 holiday travelers (38%) plan to primarily stay at the home of a family member or friend this year. This was true of about the same proportion (37%) of 2019 holiday travelers.COVID-19 alters holiday travel plansNo matter what holidays you observe in December, celebrations may look different this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of Americans who say their holiday travel plans were impacted by the pandemic, 2 in 5 (40%) say that while they usually travel with or visit friends and family members, this year they won’t. More than a quarter (27%) usually drive somewhere out of town but won’t this year, and 17% usually fly somewhere but won’t this year.What you can do: Avoiding travel altogether is the safest course of action as COVID-19 cases surge across the country. It’s been a difficult year, and not being able to spend time with friends and family is a big part of that, but the best way to protect yourself and the people you care about most is staying home this holiday season.“This holiday season looks very different from years before. It’s hard to not travel, but staying home helps keep you and your loved ones safe,” says NerdWallet travel expert Sara Rathner. “If we each do our part, maybe Christmas in July will become a real way to celebrate belatedly in person.”Large drop in number of holiday travelers this yearAccording to our survey, three-quarters of Americans (75%) traveled out of town for the December 2019 holiday season. In 2020, just 24% of Americans are planning December holiday travel, and another 17% were unsure when asked in the first week of November.More than half of holiday travelers (56%) say their plans were impacted by COVID-19. Almost a third (31%) say their plans weren’t impacted, and 13% weren’t sure at the time we asked. Of those travelers who say their plans have been impacted, some of the biggest changes are traveling closer to home than usual (25%), driving their personal vehicle when they usually fly (23%) and spending less time away from home than they normally would (23%).Parents of children under 18 are more likely to plan on out-of-town December holiday travel this year than Americans without minor children (37% vs. 18%). Most (68%) of these parents’ travel plans were affected by COVID-19, with 27% saying they usually travel farther from home, but this year they’ll stay closer.What travelers can do: If you’re traveling out of town this December, make sure you’re up to date on the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, for traveling safely. These guidelines can change rapidly, so stay abreast of any new developments through the dates you’re planning to travel.“A number of states increased restrictions before Thanksgiving, so if you’re traveling to another state, it may look very different there than it does at home. Plan ahead so you can follow the rules,” Rathner says. “Pack enough masks and find out which local businesses may be operating on limited hours. If you plan to get a COVID test, availability is limited in some areas. You don’t want to leave these arrangements for the last minute.”Most holiday travelers will drive and stay with friends or familyMost holiday travelers (68%) plan to primarily drive to their destinations this year, which was also the case in 2019, when 81% say they drove as their primary transportation. The percentage of holiday travelers flying as their primary mode of transportation is up this year (24% vs. 12% in 2019), but that doesn’t mean more Americans are flying. Since fewer U.S. adults are traveling overall, that’s less than 15 million Americans flying, compared with last year’s almost 23 million flyers. [1]Primary lodging plans mirror last year’s: For 2020, 38% of holiday travelers plan to primarily stay at the home of a friend or family member. In 2019, 37% of holiday travelers say they primarily stayed at a loved one’s home. The second most popular primary lodging choice in both years was a hotel or motel (28% in 2020, 25% in 2019).What travelers can do: Keep your travel plans as flexible as possible, in case the pandemic upends them in the eleventh hour. Don’t worry about booking early to get the best price. 2020 is an unconventional year, and if you do opt to travel, you’ll probably find that costs are lower than in holiday seasons past.“You need a Plan A, B, C and D for holiday travel this year,” Rathner says. “When you book anything, know what the airline, hotel or car rental companies’ policies are for cancellations. The holiday shopping season got off to a hot start on Friday as consumers flooded into stores and logged onto e-commerce sites in search of deals.Real-time figures from Mastercard show that overall sales are poised to hit billion on Black Friday alone. That's up about 9% from the day after Thanksgiving last year.Mastercard projects that overall holiday sales from November 1 through Christmas Eve should grow by 5% this year."We've gotten off to a very good start," said Steve Sadove, Mastercard senior advisor. "Both online and in-store sales are both tracking very well."More and more Black Friday shoppers are turning online to score discounts and deals.Adobe, which tracks online sales, reported that online purchases were up nearly 28% in the early hours of Friday morning.Very cold weather in the Northeast might be helping online sales growth on Friday, Mastercard's Sadove said.Electronics are a hot sellers. Adobe reported that the Nintendo Switch is the most popular item online, and Sadove said the new line of digital assistants and smart home products are attracting buyers.The strong holiday sales are being fueled in part by a healthy economy, which features low unemployment and some gains in average income. High levels of consumer confidence also help.In addition, the calendar is favorable for a strong holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving came earlier this year, and Christmas falls on a Tuesday. The massive new Museum of the Bible opens just blocks from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. later this week.Measuring 430,000 square feet, the privately-funded, 0 million project houses over 2,800 artifacts going back to biblical times. And then there's the building's size and scope, which rivals some of the neighboring Smithsonian museums on the National Mall, and the top-floor view of the Capitol Dome."Some people think we're coming here to have an influence on Congress. Who doesn't come here to have an influence on Congress," said Steve Green, the chairman of the museum's board.As President of Hobby Lobby, Green has already made an impact in Washington and around the country when the Supreme Court in 2014 sided by a 5-4 vote with his company over the Obama Administration, ruling the Affordable Care Act's contraception mandate to be a violation of the family-owned, for-profit business' religious freedom.But Green says any influence the Museum of the Bible may have on members of Congress who come to view the exhibits is only a happy byproduct of the real reason why the museum found its way to its Washington location. According to Green, the museum's leadership selected the city for the capital's foot traffic, not politics, and executive director Tony Zeiss says their settling on a building so close to the Capitol "was simply coincidence." The museum, which opens Friday after seven years of planning, focuses on the history, stories, and impact of the Bible, and includes interactive features like a space re-creating Jesus's first-century village.But the museum doesn't shy away from American politics, either, with exhibits detailing the Bible's importance from 17th century Puritan settlers to the 20th century civil rights movement, and how the Bible was used to justify both pro- and anti-slavery stances that drove America into Civil War."We want people to see how it was used for the good, the bad, and the ugly," says Norm Conrad, the museum's curator for Americana and Biblical Imprints.If there's any lesson on today's politics and culture visitors should take away, the museum's leaders aren't telling.
