SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Jewish leaders celebrated the second night of Hanukkah Monday, lighting the second candle of a massive Menorah outside City Hall.As the second night of the Jewish Festival of Lights got underway, Rabbi Zalman Carlebach said it was important for leaders to show their support and celebrate in light of recent anti-Semetic incidents around the U.S. "In light of the current events that are happening around the country, this world could use some more light. America could use some more light," said Rabbi Carlebach.San Diego has numerous Menorah lighting events planned as well as other celebrations throughout the county as Hanukkah continues — running through Dec. 10. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's already been one year since the San Diego Zoo Safari Park saw the first southern white rhino born through artificial insemination arrive at its park.Edward turned one-year-old on July 28, celebrating with a party at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center with his mother Victoria, 8-month-old female calf Future, and her mother Amani."Even though he doesn’t know it’s his birthday, it is very special to see Edward – a healthy, robust rhino - running around, enjoying his special treats," said Barbara Durrant, director of Reproductive Sciences at San Diego Zoo Global. "We aren’t just celebrating his birthday but also are celebrating the significance of his birth."Edward was born last year after hormone-induced ovulation and artificial insemination with frozen semen from southern white rhino Maoto on March 22, 2018. Victoria gave birth 16 months later. Edward's birth was the zoo's first successful attempt to birth a southern white rhino via artificial insemination and a critical step toward recovering its distant cousin, the northern white rhino. Currently, only two northern white rhinos exist in the world and both are female.Researchers believe that a northern white rhino calf could be born from artificial insemination within 10 to 20 years. 1313

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Military families told 10News they are without heating and A/C due to mold in their air ducts.The families live in Tierrasanta and say housing came into their homes mid-October.Nancy Irvin has lived in the same home for six years with her military husband, 2-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter.She said problems with the home started day one, "the upstairs was leaking down from the tub to the garage so all of our stuff that was in boxes was flooding.""It's been sickness after sickness, cold, bronchitis, double ear infections everything," Irvin explained her children have been sick since they moved in and doctors haven't been able to tell them what's wrong."He's been coughing until he throws up at night," Irvin said while holding her crying toddler, Easton. She said even the dog developed a rash. She blames mold in their home.Mid-October Irvin said housing came in, tested for mold, removed her vents an taped over the holes. She said the lack of heating is keeping her children awake at night.She said a cleaning company came in to work on the vents but she wants more, "housing is doing nothing, they're not talking to anyone, they're not giving any information and it's just stressful."Neighbors said they are dealing with the same issues, posting photos of black fluffy mold in the air vents.In September, 10News reported on the Charvat family, who won a -million lawsuit against Lincoln Military Housing, saying mold also made their family sick at their home near the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot.Their lawsuit is in the middle of the appeals process. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Keep an eye out for two new residents at the San Diego Zoo - two penguin chicks named Lucas and Dot. The three-month-old penguin chicks will reside in the Cape Fynbos habitat with a colony of 29 adult penguins. After weeks of careful planning—including providing the chicks with a private pool, where they learned how to swim the hand raised penguins got to see their new home. The two juveniles immediately started swimming and climbing rocks, while keepers vigilantly monitored their progress. Animal care staff said the initial introduction went very smoothly and the birds behaved exactly as keepers had hoped, but they plan to allow only closely monitored interactions for the next few days.“We will be pulling [Lucas and Dot] back at night,” said Debbie Denton, keeper. “We don’t want to leave them out unsupervised yet. We just want to give them a few days out here with the rest of the colony, and make sure that they are comfortable enough to do OK on their own overnight.”Lucas and Dot were hatched in San Diego from eggs supplied though a breeding loan by the Minnesota Zoo, which has successfully hatched more than 24 eggs since opening its African penguin habitat in 2011.    Guests can visit Lucas and Dot at their home in the Cape Fynbos habitat, inside Africa Rocks at the Zoo.    1379
