BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese industry faced a grim situation, as the global financial crisis would have a deep impact on the industrial and information technology sectors, a senior official warned on Wednesday.     Zhu Hongren, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said the country needed to increase investment in key areas and weak points of the industrial economy. The government should maintain a reasonable investment scale and step up technical innovation.     He said the imbalance between weakening demand and expanding capacity would become more problematic as the crisis spread. Labor-intensive and export-oriented businesses would be hurt as prices of energy and raw materials would continue fluctuating.     Among others, the electricity, textile and non-ferrous metal industries had already sustained heavy losses, with 18.3 percent of large industrial companies losing money during the first eight months of the year.     Industrial output growth fell to 11.4 percent in September, the lowest since April 2002. Power generation and oil production grew a mere 3.4 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively, while steel output fell 9.1 percent year-on-year.     In the first three quarters, the value of industrial exports rose 15.7 percent, which was 6.1 percentage points less than a year earlier.

LIMA, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that the central government would take effective measures to help Hong Kong to ward off the impact of the global financial crisis, safeguard the stability of financial markets and boost economic growth.     Hu made the remarks during a meeting with Donald Tsang, chief executive of the the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China.     Hu expressed his belief that as long as the HKSAR government and people from all circles could be united, the region would maintain its long-term prosperity and stability.     Donald Tsang briefed the president on his government's efforts in dealing with the current financial crisis and voiced his appreciation for the central government's support to Hong Kong. BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao offered six proposals to promote the peaceful development of the cross-Straits relationship in a speech to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the mainland's "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan" here on Wednesday.     Hu said the mainland is willing to discuss with Taiwan proper and reasonable arrangements for Taiwan's participation in international organizations, as long as this does not create a scenario of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan".     Although the two sides of the Taiwan Straits have been split since 1949 by a civil war, the political confrontation between them did not change the fact that they belonged to one China, he said.     "Once the two sides reach a common understanding and accordant stance on the principle of one China, the foundation of political mutual trust will be laid and anything can be talked about between the two sides," he said. "Anything that is conducive to peaceful development across the Straits, we will greatly promote. Anything that harms it, we will firmly oppose."     Hu proposed that the two sides end hostility and reach peaceful agreements under the one China principle.     The two sides can start discussion about political relations under the special condition before reunification in a pragmatic manner, he said.     He also suggested the two sides to step up contacts and exchanges on military issues "at an appropriate time" and talk about a military security mechanism of mutual trust, in a bid to stabilize cross-Straits relations and ease concerns about military security. BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China said Friday it welcomes and supports the UN Security Council resolution on Gaza.     "The resolution reflects the concerns and desires of the international community on the situation in Gaza," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in response to a question.     China called for effective implementation by all parties concerned of the new resolution and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, Qin noted.     China also urged Israel to withdraw its forces from Gaza, ensure the smooth operation of humanitarian aid activities and ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza at an early date, he said.     Qin called on all parties concerned to continue the political process to achieve a just and reasonable settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli issue and realize the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and peaceful coexistence.     The UN Security Council on Thursday adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza "leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces."     The new resolution, drafted by Britain, was adopted with 14 voting in favor and the United States abstaining after a compromise was reached between Arab foreign ministers and their Western counterparts.     More than 700 Palestinians reportedly died in 13 days of Israeli military action in Gaza, which was undertaken in retaliation for the firing of rockets into southern Israel by Hamas militants.

It was initiated by the CPC in 2003 and written into the CPC's constitution during the 17th National Congress of the Party in 2007.     The principles emphasize a people-first approach, while requiring comprehensive and sustainable development with a dual emphasis on speed and quality.     In September, the CPC launched an 18-month educational campaign, asking all Party cadres and officials to study the principles while applying them in their own work.     Xi Jinping said the annual Central Economic Work Conference, which concluded on Wednesday, had made a full plan on maintaining stable and healthy growth next year through domestic demand expansion and economic restructuring.     He said central government organs, often as key policy makers, should check whether shortcomings in their own work had hindered the implementation of the key policies.     "At present the top task for us is to identify and solve those shortcomings that could have negative impacts on economic growth, vital interest of the people and social stability," he said.
