Authorities in India have decided to hold off retrieving the body of the American national feared killed on North Sentinel Island amid concerns about a possible confrontation with the tribe that lives there.John Allen Chau is believed to have been killed by Sentinelese tribespeople after he visited their island home in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago in November, breaching local laws strictly prohibiting contact with the isolated people.Indian police say Chau found local fishermen who agreed to take him near the island, before using a canoe the rest of the way. "We do not want to go there and create an unhappy situation."The decision to avoid a direct confrontation with the isolated tribe came after a series of meetings and reconnaissance trips made by the officials. Anthropologists and tribal experts were also consulted.By Sunday, authorities had mapped out the area with the help of the fishermen and observed several members of the tribe walking around the area where eyewitnesses claim to have seen Chau's body dragged and buried.However, despite ruling out any immediate attempts to land on the island, local police would not categorically rule out retrieving the body at a future date. Experts suggest inquiring about ventilation and cleanliness. And get parent referrals. A lot of them.“What really is important is trust. You’re going to need to check off all the boxes of making sure people are cleaning, making sure air is really good. Instinctually once you make that checklist, you have to say as a parent, 'Do I trust these people with my most important thing which is my child,'” Schweikert said.There are some things that might be missing because of COVID-19, like parent and teacher visits. Some facilities like Lightbridge Academy are now reliant on electronics and in-center cameras.Green said she's confident in her decision. Her boys are happy and healthy every day, and she feels confident that she's successfully managing her career.“It makes me feel good to know that the daycare is actually practicing the appropriate safety precautions and wearing the appropriate protective equipment, take temperatures it is an added measure,” Green said. 3130

Across the country, school districts are carefully weighing their options about reopening in the middle of a pandemic.Clark wants her children to have the daily structure of school back in their lives. However, she's also incredibly concerned about someone in her family catching the virus.“What if one of us gets sick? That means the whole house would get sick. Then, how do we work?” she wondered.That is the reality facing countless families across the country.“It’s more than being stuck between a rock and a hard place, it’s just being stuck in a hard place constantly and not having a light at the end of the tunnel,” she added.Families are now having to juggle it all, while at the same time, making sure their kids don’t fall through the cracks.As some school resume in-person learning, many parents like Clark are worried about what could happen if there’s a sudden outbreak and their child’s school is forced to shut down.“I can either work or be there for me kids; I can’t do both,” she said.Recognizing the impossible predicament the pandemic has placed parents in, Congress passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act back in March. It gives parents two weeks of paid sick leave if you find yourself having to quarantine. Parents also get two weeks of paid sick leave at two-thirds of their regular salary if the child's school or daycare shuts down because of COVID-19. Additionally, it guarantees 10 weeks of leave at two-thirds of their salary if they need to take care of a sick child.But those benefits will run out on December 31.“Employers are recognizing that there has to be a solution. If kids can’t go back to school, parents can’t go back to work full-time,” explained Chris Feudo, an attorney with Foley Hoag in Boston.As the pandemic enters its fifth month in the United States, Feudo says another issue facing parents is that they’ve already exhausted all of their FMLA leave. Because of that, he says parents should talk to their employers as soon as possible if it appears your child’s school or daycare might shut down because of a COVID-19 outbreak.“Come up with a plan and say, ‘This is the most I can do for my employer.’ If you have a thought-out plan, it shows you're being proactive and I think employers will be more responsive to that,” he added.Feudo says if you've run out of FMLA leave and need to ask your boss for more time off to care for family members, it's best to have the conversation in-person, if possible, or via a Zoom or video conference call. He says employers are being more flexible right now because of the outbreak but they need to see that employees are willing to bring up difficult situations before they become major issues.Under federal law, it’s also illegal for employers to retaliate against someone for using FMLA leave.As for Clark, she’s still waiting to find out if her district will have in-person learning this fall and she’s doing her best to manage whatever new challenge the pandemic throws her way.“I don’t know single parents are doing it, especially if they’re trying to bring in a paycheck,” she said. 3762

  

BABSON PARK, Fla. — A second university in Polk County, Florida has announced that they will be joining a program that will allow its staff and faculty to legally carry guns on campus.The announcement comes just eight days after a gunman opened fire on a Florida high school killing 17 people.The Polk County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with Webber International University, is establishing the Sheriff's Sentinel Program to enhance the safety of an already safe and secure community of students, faculty, staff, and guests at the University's campus in Babson Park, Florida."Prayers are not enough," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a press conference on Thursday. “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."Sheriff Judd explained that each teacher or staff member will have to go through extensive training through the program before they are given a gun."My babies — your babies — are in that classroom, and that active shooter is coming down the hallway with that thousand yard stare and that gun in their hand, do you want somebody to step out and stop him? As the COVID-19 vaccine makes its way across the country and into the hands of those who need it most, many nursing homes and senior communities are anxiously waiting as they are the most vulnerable.“I’m a true Okie from Muskogee, Oklahoma,” says 80-year-old Donna. After 46 years, she and her 83-year-old husband Art made the decision to leave the countryside and move into a senior community. They chose one of the 26 Arrow Senior Living communities that are housed around the Midwest. Things were great until the pandemic hit.“Since we live on the independent side, we do our own things. Until this COVID hit, we came and went as we wanted to,”she said.Their way of living is now completely different. No visits with their three sons. No extracurricular activities. They're diligent about masks and about the proper public health measures to prevent the virus.“It's a big concern, we know this is a killer,” Donna said. “Some get a light case and some are asymptomatic and you never who’s going to get the serious case.”Which is why she's anxiously waiting for the vaccine. She remembers when the polio vaccine came out and said it was wonderful."I don’t remember people questioning it, being afraid of having it so much then as some people today but I don’t know why they’d even question it with the horrible pandemic we’ve been having,” Donna said.Stephanie Harris, CEO of Arrow Senior Living said “absolutely” when asked if she would get the vaccine. Harris says her employees will get it too. In all, nearly 4,000 people between residents and staff will need to be vaccinated.“We have been blown away at how overwhelming the response has been by our resident group, over 90% of our residents, when we surveyed them, said ‘yes’ to vaccination,” says Harris.They're not first in line, but they're not far off. They have clinics scheduled for late December, and they're excited.“I’m tired of being cooped up and taking extraordinary precautions to ensure that I could be here in this seat to support our larger operation and I want to be able to get on with some sense of normal,” Harris said.Harris added this recent surge has been brutal and it's taking an emotional toll on everyone.Holiday gatherings have been canceled, important events missed during a time when grandparents should be spending with grandkids. It's caused Arrow Senior Living to take extraordinary precautions, deploying things like mask detection technology to determine whether face coverings are being utilized. There's not one community in their network that hasn't been touched by COVID-19.“This is going to be a strange Christmas, we’re accepting it,” Donna said. “We have three sons but they’re all doing their thing.
