HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - A new study shows that teens who use vaping devices or e-cigarettes could be at an elevated risk for contracting COVID-19."Maybe they have been in contact with contaminated surfaces or it's been a while since they washed their hands, then they bring a device to their mouth; there are many risks," said Dr. Danielle Lecky-Chadhuri with Pediatric Partners of Hampton Roads.She says young people may think their age protects them from getting coronavirus, but that is not true."Smoking is going to increase receptors in the lungs lining that COVID and or other viruses like influenza can attach to and cause further inflammation," said Lecky-Chaudhuri.A new study by Stanford University School of Medicine published in August found that teens were five to seven times more likely to experience COVID-19 symptoms like coughing, fever, and shortness of breath compared to those who never smoked or vaped."Even the ones that are nicotine-free have been shown to have traces and small amounts of nicotine in them," she said.Lecky-Chaudhuri says teens are more vulnerable to nicotine dependence."Certainly the younger they are, the brain is not matured, and that would increase sustainability to be addicted and dependent," she said.Nicotine isn't the only danger of using e-cigarettes."We have seen injuries from burns, explosions, chemical injuries as well as nicotine exposure and overdose," she said.Lecky-Chaudhuri recommends talking to your children about acute and long-term effects – perhaps listing reasons that would relate well to them."Maybe tell them they may not like the way their hair and my clothes smell and that they could be at an increased risk of staining their teeth or decreased athletic performance."This story was first reported by Chelsea Donovan at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 1825
GREELEY, Colo. — A Colorado woman says she was denied a haircut at a local Great Clips because her baby son was not wearing a mask.Meri Smith decided she was finally ready to get a haircut. It would have been her first one since the COVID-19 pandemic reached the U.S. in March.She made an online appointment at Great Clips, and when she went to the salon to check-in, she was told that her son "can't come in" to the building."They said you can't come in because he's under two and he can't wear a mask," Smith said.Smith said she was confused and humiliated by the situation. As a teacher, she's familiar with Colorado's statewide mask mandate and she knows it doesn't apply to children who are 10 and younger."I just felt rejected. It made me sad and uncomfortable that I couldn't go get a haircut just because my son was a baby," Smith said.A spokesperson for Great Clips released the following statement from Michelle Iacovetta, the COO of Holtzman Enterprises, Inc. and a Great Clips franchisee."Holtzman Enterprises, Inc. does not require children under two years of age to wear a mask in our salons, following guidance from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The misunderstanding of this policy that took place recently in our Greeley salon was unfortunate and disappointing. Quincy Jones is the director at Sage Truck Driving School and says there are a few reasons why people aren’t becoming drivers.“Part of the reason is because the average truck driver is 55 years old and with the shortage of millennials coming in," Jones said.With drivers retiring and young people choosing four-year degrees, it's affecting deliveries. Companies like Coke, Hershey’s and General Mills have all said they have to pay more to get their items shipped to stores, which means wallets take a hit."I think ecommerce has a lot to do with it — just with the demand of everybody having to order stuff to have it delivered to their houses instead of actually going out and shopping for it,” Jones said.Being a truck driver can be a lucrative job right out of the gate, and it only takes four weeks of training. That’s one of the reason Sage student Miguel decided to sign up.“The money is really good, especially in this field — and I mean it’s just a lot to offer, benefits and money,” Miguel said.With a shortage of drivers, some companies are offering big signing bonuses for those considering driving. Solo drivers could receive a ,000 signing bonus, and team drivers could receive up to ,000.Jones believes more people would become drivers if they could afford the training.“With increased funding from the government helping with these new students through and getting them into the industry I think that’s a possible way,” he said.Even though Miguel is sacrificing a lot starting this career, he knows it’s beneficial to everyone.“It’s a full cycle. Hawaii wants you to come work remotely in paradise.Last month, the state launched a temporary residency program called "Movers and Shakas" to persuade people to move to help boost the economy by working and living in the Aloha State.Fifty people will be chosen and would receive incentives like free roundtrip airfare and discounts on hotels.According to a press release, the program will accept more applicants on a rolling basis.Those accepted into the program must stay for at least 30 days, commit a few hours every week to volunteer for a non-profit, and be at least 18 years old.The program is accepting applications until Dec. 15. 645
