But the responders aren't caped crusaders, and they are not riding in the Batmobile. On a recent house call, they visited Lee Armstrong, whose gout made it nearly impossible to make it to the doctor.  "Is it this toe?" Womack asks. "Yes," Armstrong replies. Womack confirms.  After evaluating him, Womack was able to give Armstrong a dose of medication on the spot.  "Okay I'm going to print you up some instructions here," Womack says.  He was relieved.  "It's a shame that you can be so sick that you can't travel," Armstrong said. "I couldn't hardly walk to the door in there. I really appreciate it. I really do."  "I like going into the home with the patients," Womack said. "And seeing the challenges they might have in the home that if you came into the emergency room you might not see."  "People would come to the emergency department just for simple things like that which we can do quickly and easily at their own home," says Phil Mitchell, an ER physician and Medical Director at DispatchHealth.Dr. Mitchell said that experience is a catalyst for the work dispatch health does.Nationwide, 50 percent of emergency rooms operate at or above capacity. And every year 500,000 ambulances are diverted away from the closest hospital due to ER overcrowding."How do we provide more value for patients?" Mitchell says. "How to we decrease 911 transports and how do we decrease emergency medicine and emergency department visits for patients that don't really need to be in that high level of care."  From gout to a common cold, no need is too small. And the company says on average it's about 80 percent more affordable than a visit to the emergency room.There is an ongoing effort to streamline service and provide care where it's most comfortable.Right now, DispatchHealth operates in Colorado, Arizona, and Virginia and is continuing to expand nationwide with new operations scheduled to open in Las Vegas this year. 2375

HOUSTON - A social media influencer was found dead along the side of a road in Houston, a day after going missing, leaving many questions for friends and family. Alexis Sharkey’s friends are now telling media outlets she feared for her safety.Sharkey was found dead Saturday morning by Houston public works crews and was not wearing any clothes, according to local media. Investigators say she had no visible wounds, and the cause of death is pending an autopsy. They also say there was no attempt to hide the body along the road.The 26-year-old shared details of her life and fashion on Instagram, gaining a large following of more than 26,000 followers initially, it has grown to 40,000 following news of her disappearance. His neighbors eventually got in on the decorating and now, every year, this strip of row houses is covered so thickly in Christmas lights that planes landing at nearby Baltimore Washington International Airport might mistake it for a landing strip.And this year, more than ever, Hoshier knew his gift to the neighborhood had to shine."It's been a terrible year. With the amount of people out of work, the kids that aren’t gonna have a great Christmas, and this is free, isn’t going to cost them anything," Hoshier said as he watched people walk up and down the block admiring the lights.Turns out Hoshier isn't alone in his love for light. Sales of Christmas lights are up nearly 20 percent nationwide in 2020."With the way everyone is hunkered down in their houses, it puts a little joy on kids' faces,” Hoshier said. “You only have to put one string of lights up, you don’t have to go crazy as we do.”But the holidays aside, there might be something much deeper at play when it comes to Americans’ newfound fascination with Christmas lights this year. In a year defined by darkness, psychology professor Dr. Krystine Batcho sees a reason behind those skyrocketing light sales."Holidays themselves are wonderful social or community markers for time. It reminds us that there’s a cycle to nature, the seasons' cycle," said Dr. Batcho, who teaches at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York.With so many of our routines upended, putting up lights can be a marker in time. A way for our subconscious to reset."None of us can stop time or reverse it, but when you put up those lights, you’re saying, ‘I’m going to tell the world it’s time to take a break,’" she added.In a year that has seen its fair share of darkness, Dr. Batcho sees these tiny little bulbs as lighting the way forward."It’s an act of hope, and we all are anticipating the end of the pandemic, so this takes on more meaning, more purpose,” she said. 2234

If you've notice delays in the delivery of your packages or higher prices for some of things you order, a shortage of truck drivers may be to blame. A new program is hoping to bring some relief, but some worry it'll make roads less safe.The program trains teenagers to drive cross country. Elijah Amos is one of the teens involved with the program and working towards getting his commercial driver’s license.“I think we really did it for me is driving,” Amos says. “Because I really like driving and I feel like you get paid a decent amount of money. Just to drive.”But since he's 18, he won't be able to drive from state to state. He'll have to wait until he's 21. However, a new government pilot program will soon allow some drivers as young as 18 to drive cross country.“I feel like it would open up more job opportunities,” Amos says. “And maybe it opened up the eyes to some of the younger people maybe like actually try and do it.”The program would be available to some members of the National Guard and others with military experience. But in March, House Republicans introduced a bill to lower the commercial driving age to 18 for anyone driving state to state. Their goal? To fight a nation-wide truck driving shortage.Quincy Jones, who directs Sage Truck Driving School, says it's been challenging to attract driving students. He says ultimately, consumers pay the price.“Shipping costs get passed down the consumer,” Jones says. “So if there's a shortage, those aren't getting picked up as frequently. And so who pays them? We do. We all pay. Consumers do."The American Trucking Associations says the shortage is expected to hit 63,000 this year. But with motor vehicle drivers aged 16 to 19 being nearly three times more likely than people over 20 to fatally crash, not everyone believes teen drivers are the solution to the problem.“Younger people have less experience driving for all types of vehicles,” says Norita Taylor, with the Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association. “And so the crash rates are higher for younger people, and so we think it would be a dangerous idea.”Sponsors say the bill would require teens complete at least 240 hours driving supervised by a veteran driver.  2240

Hurricane Willa has made landfall near Isla Del Bosque, Sinaloa, on the western coast of Mexico, approximately 50 miles south of Mazatlán.The storm will quickly weaken over the next 24 hours as it makes its way across the Sierra Madre range and becomes a rainmaker for northern Mexico and Texas on Wednesday.When Willa made landfall Tuesday evening, it had top winds of 120 MPH. The Category 3 storm, while still a major hurricane, has weakened since peaking as a Category 5 hurricane on Monday. Willa has been a danger for forecasters as well. An aircraft with the Air Force Reserve's Hurricane Hunters was forced to turn around Monday over concerns for its onboard equipment after a lightning bolt from one of Willa's outer rain bands blasted it, according to the National Hurricane Center.In a tweet Monday, Mexican President Enrique Pe?a Nieto said he has asked the National System of Civil Protection to take all steps necessary to protect those in the hurricane's path as well as those affected by Tropical Storm Vicente, a weaker system tracking south of Willa that's also primed to make landfall Tuesday. Vicente likely will be a tropical depression by the time it comes ashore, the hurricane center said.Airlines have started moving out of Willa's path. Southwest Airlines has canceled all flights at the international airport in Puerto Vallarta, a resort city in Jalisco state.
