This would be the first fruiting plant the United States has grown and harvested at the International Space Station.As NASA looks to send astronauts to Mars, it's crucial that the agency find plants and fruits that can travel with them.According to Jacob Torres, a NASA scientist, depending on the alignment of the planets, the shortest trip to Mars would still take two years. Traditional prepackaged meals will not provide enough vitamins and nutrients for astronauts on the journey."They would be able to fill their stomachs up, but they wouldn't have the nutrients to do their work," Torres said.Before NASA embarks toward the Red Planet, scientists must find ways to supplement the astronauts' diet with freshly grown fruits and vegetables, such as the Espa?ola pepper.Why chile peppers?There are many challenges to growing crops in space. A plant must be easily pollinated and able to survive in a high-carbon-dioxide environment.Scientists found that certain chile peppers can do both these things.When Torres arrived at NASA in 2018 for an internship, scientists were exploring the possibility of growing Hatch peppers, a New Mexico chile.Torres, a native of that state, suggested that the team look at the state's Espa?ola pepper instead.Hatch peppers grow in the deserts of New Mexico, but Espa?ola peppers grow at much higher altitudes and have a shorter growth period, making them better for harvesting in space.The Espa?ola peppers have exceeded expectations, he said. It's fitting that the orange-hued, googly-eyed mascot once written off as nightmare fuel made a 7-year-old fan's dream come true.Gritty, the idiosyncratic mascot of the National Hockey League's Philadelphia Flyers, made a rare off-ice appearance Tuesday to surprise Caiden O'Rourke, a double amputee with two rare conditions, after he was fitted with a custom prosthetic leg adorned with Gritty's unblinking face.Caiden, who's a few days shy of 8, was born with ectrodactyly, a bone deformity that means he's missing some bones and digits on his hands and feet, and amniotic band syndrome, which resulted in the amputation of his lower right leg in the womb, Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia said in a statement.As a young and growing double amputee, he's regularly fitted for new prosthetics, the hospital said. It took a few hours for the news to be released, but by all indications, Ryan Newman is okay. NASCAR officials said Newman had non life-threatening injuries following a horrific crash at the end of the Daytona 500 on Monday.Newman is in serious condition after being transported to the hospital. As Newman approached the finish line of the Daytona 500 on Monday, he was set to win his first Daytona 500 in 12 years. But a nudge from behind sent Newman into the wall as his competitors crossed the finish line. The crash allowed Denny Hamlin to win his second straight Daytona 500. As Hamlin celebrated the win, attention quickly turned to Newman, whose car spun out of control and burst into flames. After Newman's car struck the wall and flipped, it was then struck at full speed by Corey LaJoie's vehicle, causing Newman's car to flip again. Emergency crews raced to rescue Newman following the stunning crash.The celebration for Hamlin was subdued following the race."I think we take for granted sometimes how safe the cars are," Hamlin said. "But No. 1, we're praying for Ryan. Worked really well with Ryan through this whole race, and obviously he got turned right there."Ryan Blaney, who came in second place, described his view of the incident. "We pushed Newman there to the lead, and then we got a push from the 11 (Danny Hamlin's car), and I made a move off 4 (Kevin Harvick's car) on Newman and he blocked it and I kind of went low and he blocked that, so then I was committed to just pushing him to the win and trying to have a Ford win it, and I don't know, we just got bumpers hooked up wrong and turned him," Blaney said.
