CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Things got heated Thursday at a protest in Chula Vista over a library's Drag Queen Story Time. Drag Queen Story Time, set to begin at the Otay Ranch Library September 10, inspired strong feelings on both sides of the aisle. Roughly two dozen residents against the event said they were concerned it would sexually influence children. "How dare anybody. We want to protect children. We want to protect our culture. That's not hate. that's love," said Arthur Schapper, a protester against the story time. "Adult entertainers as role models? What's next? Why not porn stars," he continued. As tensions mounted at Thursday’s protest, officers with the Chula Vista Police Department were forced twice to intervene. A speaker in opposition of the story time spoke at a podium as a crowd gathered, shouting “no justice, no peace.” As voices grew louder, a group of officers made their way through the crowd, separating the groups. "But they have not even stopped to talk to these performance, these people, these human beings who just happen to also be drag queens," said Kelly Hutton. Dennis Hodges, a pastor in Lemon Grove, came to the event to oppose Drag Queen Story Time, but said he regretted how tensions escalated. "I don't scream and holler at people. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista police officer shot and killed a man who stabbed him several times in the face Tuesday night.Two officers got a call from a resident on Melrose Ave. who said a man threw a piece of concrete the size of a baseball at his head abouut 9 p.m.The officers determined the man was at a home on Monterey Ave. and went to the address at 10:25 p.m., police said.A woman opened the home's front door to the two officers.  The man began assaulting the first officer, police said, and they scuffled.Police tell 10News the man stabbed the officer up to half a dozen times in the head and face. The officer fired several times in self-defense, police said.At least one shot hit the man, who died on his way to the hospital.  CVPD identified him as 27-year-old David Scott.The second officer and the department chaplain, who was on a ridealong, were able to assist the injured officer. He was taken to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. He did not require surgery and is expected to recover.City News Service contributed to this report. 1101

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV)- A Hilltop High School alumnus who graduated in 1972 is more grateful for one of her teachers on the anniversary of D-Day. Kathy Cappos Hardy had Mr. Tom Rice as a United States Government teacher her senior year of high school. She tells 10News, “the way he enlivened it and related it to our lives made it truly something important to me”. Cappos Hardy has vivid memories of Rice and even says she pursued her career in education because of his impact he had on her. It wasn’t until about 20 years ago when Cappos Hardy realized her US Government teacher was also one of the thousands of troops who stormed the beaches of Normandy, France during World War II. 97-year-old Tom Rice is from Coronado. He was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division who landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944. On D-Day, Cappos Hardy wrote an editorial thanking her teacher for his service in and out of the classroom. Now, she’s not only hoping he sees it, but that she also gets a chance to tell him thank you when he returns from Normandy. “I hope he knows that there are a lot of us that admire him not only as a teacher but what he did prior to that.” Cappos Hardy tells 10News. 1203
