In the wake of COVID-19, doctors officers switched to treatment through telehealth to keep patients safe. For addicts and recovering addicts, the idea of getting help though virtual connections was a little different.“I’ve continually gone to meetings for 39 years, and now all of a sudden I’m not going to meetings,” Kathleen Gargan said. She’s been sober since 1981. “Thirty-nine years. I’m very lucky.”She has been going to meetings with different recovery groups for decades.“I think that's what’s kept me sober all this time is continually going to meetings and being reminded of what my life was like when I drank,” she explained. Most recently through LifeRing, a peer-to-peer support organization.For the last few months, group meetings have been mostly non-existent. The COVID-19 pandemic forced support groups to move online, which has its pros and cons.“It has made treatment available to some people who otherwise wouldn't be able to get it because they're in rural areas or far away, but it is lacking some of that in person interaction, accountability,” Doctor Christian Hopfer, an addiction psychiatrist, said. He is with the UCHealth Center for Dependency, Addiction and Rehabilitation in Colorado. “A lot of the treatment is connecting with other people in person.”Quarantinis, virtual happy hours, physical isolation. Market research firm Nielsen found that in-store alcohol sales growth for the week of March 31 spiked 54 percent compared to the year before. He said he’s even had some patients show up to virtual sessions intoxicated.Still -- he says virtual support is better than no support.“We felt having a telemedicine option was incredibly important to people. Both for people who live in an area where they don't have resources available for addiction treatment, but also for people who have busy lives,” Doctor Abe Malkin, a Medical Advisor for Monument, said.Monument is a new platform aimed at connecting patients to doctors.“Initially, the founder Mike Russell created Monument through his own journey to change his relationship with alcohol,” Dr. Malkin said. “Due to the pandemic and to social distancing and stay-at-home orders, people have had to deal with increasing anxiety, feelings of isolation, which have further triggered relapses in the community.”Monument doesn’t replace the detox process, but it works for those looking for a treatment center, a doctor to connect with, or for peer support.“We’re really trying to make this more welcoming, more inviting to people. Something they can feel that they’re part of a community without having to depart from their normal daily routines,” Dr. Malkin said.Even with new platforms to help with connection, Gargan says nothing beats in-person interaction.“Since we have the Zoom meetings, they feel great about it, they don't have to get out of their pajamas ….and they don't have to drive anywhere,” she said. “Face to face experience is, in general, richer.” 3174

INDIANAPOLIS -- More than a dozen protesters were arrested Monday afternoon after they blocked a busy downtown Indianapolis street during rush hour. The group was demonstrating as part of the "Poor People's Campaign" and started at Monument Circle before making their way to the an area outside of the Statehouse. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were called to the scene after reports of about 50 people blocking the road. Responding officers tried to talk to the protesters and gave them multiple warnings that if they did not leave the street they would be arrested. Police say they spoke to the protesters individually and tried to get them to move, but after being left with no alternative they took five women and nine men into custody. All 14 were arrested for obstruction of traffic. The group claims they were protesting against poverty, racism and other important issues.  925

INDIANAPOLIS -- Firefighters at an Indianapolis fire station opened the door early Friday morning to a one-of-a-kind request for help: A frantic woman, distressed because her pet raccoon was stoned off of too much weed.The raccoon, according to Wayne Township Fire Dept. PIO Capt. Michael Pruitt, had been exposed to "too much" of someone else’s marijuana, and its owners were worried it was overdosing. Not knowing what to do, they brought it to Station 82.“The raccoon was very lethargic,” Pruitt said. “She started explaining what had happened. It's official: The NBA is coming back on Dec. 22.The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association have struck a deal on rules for this coming season, setting the stage for what will be a frenzied few weeks before games resume. Teams will play a 72-game schedule, with the league announcing the full regular-season and broadcast schedules at a later date.The league said a new system would be used to ensure that the split of basketball-related income continues, one of the many details that had to be collectively bargained with the union because the current agreement between the sides had a great deal of language needed reworking because of the coronavirus pandemic.Teams will be able to negotiate with free agents beginning at 6 p.m. ET on Nov. 20, and at 12:01 p.m. ET on Nov. 22, teams will be able to sign them, the league announced in a press release.The league said the salary cap and tax level would remain the same heading into the new season. During the 2019-20 season, the cap was 9.14 million, with the tax level at 2,627,000."A new system will be used to ensure the parties' agreed-upon split of basketball-related income (BRI)," the league said in the news release. "In the event, player compensation were to exceed the players' designated share in any season, necessary salary reductions beyond the standard 10 percent escrow would be spread across that season and potentially the following two seasons, subject to a maximum salary reduction in any season of 20 percent."This season, teams will not be playing in a bubble, so health and safety protocols amid the coronavirus pandemic will need to be worked out as teams will be traveling from city to city once again.Last season ended on Oct. 10, so the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat will only have rested seven weeks before they start training camp on Dec. 1. 1856
