Beyond the beaches of the world, lies the potential for oceans of energy."I'm very excited about this because it's a very renewable energy-based technology,” said Professor Bruce Logan of Penn State University.Logan and university researchers recently created a device that removes salt from seawater in a cheaper way, allowing that water to then be used to create a renewable form of hydrogen fuel.“There's a lot of interest in renewable hydrogen,” Logan said. “Most of the hydrogen made today is made from fossil fuels, and so, we're interested in making that hydrogen from water.”That involves splitting water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen. The problem? Seawater also has salt, which needs to be removed first and that’s expensive to do.However, the “seawater electrolyzer” that Logan and his team worked on takes care of that issue cheaply by using a special membrane and without requiring expensive desalination plants. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Energy and Environmental Science.“Hydrogen is a great fuel,” he said. “It's been examined as a fuel for many decades now.”About 97 percent of all the water on earth is in the ocean, which means if it could be used efficiently to make hydrogen fuel, it could be a game-changer.“As we look to de-carbonize our fossil fuel infrastructure, we also can use it primarily for heavy-duty vehicles,” Logan said. “Airbus is looking to actually make airplanes that fly on hydrogen.”For now, though, their device would need to be scaled-up to a much larger version.“There are many nations and companies and nations across the world looking to do this. One of the biggest proposed hydrogen plants is in Saudi Arabia -- billion,” Logan said. “I would hope to convince them that it might be cheaper and better to use seawater directly, you know, in a system like this.”It’s a possibility that might one day create a bridge between our energy needs on land and the power in the sea. 1962

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A Bloomington, Ind. man is accused of holding a toddler under hot water as a punishment after the child soiled his diaper, causing severe burns. The investigation began on November 24, after the 2-year-old boy was transported to Riley Hospital for Children to be treated for multiple severe burns and other injuries.According to court documents, Dennis Tannen, 29, was watching his girlfriend’s son while she was at work when the child was burned.Tannen initially told police that he had put the child in the bathtub and left him for “10 seconds” and when he came back the child had turned on the hot water, burning himself. The child's mother said Tannen called her and she rushed home and found him “outside smoking a cigarette.” She told police that her son had large burn marks on his face that looked like his skin was falling off when she first saw him. They took the child to IU Bloomington Hospital where he was later transported to Riley Hospital for Children. The child was treated for severe burns on his face, lips, buttocks, and genitals. Riley doctors told police that the child also had suspicious bruising on his chest and face and that the child’s injuries did not match up the couple's story. After multiple rounds of questioning, Tannen eventually admitted to police that he was waiting for a phone call when the toddler had a bowel movement in his diaper. He said he became agitated and went to wash the child off in the bathtub, turning the water on “full hot” and holding him under it to wash him off.Tannen told police he also put the child’s face under the same hot water to wash and that the child had slipped when he was holding him and he grabbed him, which caused the bruises on the child’s chest.Tannen was arrested and charged with felony neglect of a dependent. 1833

Bill Nye the Science Guy has returned to his roots of explaining scientific concepts, but on a different platform – TikTok.On Thursday, the former TV show host posted two videos on the platform, which is mostly used by younger people, to demonstrate why the public should wear masks to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. In his first video, Nye starts by explaining why people in the scientific community want you to wear face coverings when you’re out in public.“Face masks, like this one, prevent particles from my respiratory system from getting into the air and then into your respiratory system,” said Nye. “Blocking the movement of air is an old trick.”Nye then demonstrates how scarfs can block the movement of air to keep our necks warm, but they don’t block air enough to stop his breath from blowing out a candle.Afterwards, Nye brings out a homemade face mask with two layers of cloth and a pipe cleaner. Although the mask is simple, Nye says it “blocks the movement of air very effectively.” He tries to blow the candle out with the mask over his face, but he can’t.“If you’re wearing one of these, you’re protecting yourself and those around you,” said Nye. @billnye ##WearAMask ##LearnOnTikTok ##TikTokPartner? original sound - billnye In his second video, Nye brings out an N95 mask, which are used to block particles in the medical community and by those cutting their lawns. He tries to blow the candle out again and it’s even more effective than the cloth face mask.“So, the reason we want you to wear a mask is to protect you, sure, but the main reason we want you to wear a mask is to protect me, from you, and the particles from your respiratory system from getting into my respiratory system,” said Nye. “Everybody, this is a matter, literally, of life and death. And when I use the word literally, I mean literally.”“So, when you’re out in public, please where a mask,” Nye ends. @billnye ##WearAMask ##LearnOnTikTok ##TikTokPartner? original sound - billnye Nye isn’t the only one advocating for face coverings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health officials are also asking Americans to wear masks in public to help slow the spread of COVID-19, which has killed more than 133,000 people in the U.S. and the cases are continuing to grow.A growing list of states are actually requiring residents to wear face coverings before leaving their homes. 2434

BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho Division of Public Health (IDHW) has received reports of two health care workers experiencing severe allergic reactions after receiving the Pfizer and BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. A news release says the reactions happened in north Idaho and in the Treasure Valley. IDHW says an investigation on ongoing in both reactions, but one person has fully recovered and the other is hospitalized in stable condition, but is expected to be discharged today. Both people had a known history of severe reactions after receiving injectable medication. “The CDC considers a history of severe allergic reaction such as anaphylaxis to any vaccine or to any injectable therapy as a precaution, but not contraindication, to vaccination,” said Dr. Christine Hahn, medical director for the Division of Public Health. “In light of these events, we are concerned about the risk to people with such a history and recommend that anyone with a history of severe reaction or anaphylaxis to any vaccine or injectable therapy defer taking this vaccine until more is known.”Federal, state and local public health agencies are monitoring reports of allergic reactions to the vaccine. The Department of Health and Welfare is reviewing data from the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System and state reporting systems. These systems are where providers who vaccinate and people who receive the vaccine can report any reaction they think is related. “We will continue to update vaccine providers and the public as soon as we know more,” said Dr. Hahn. “In the meantime, people without a history of severe reaction or anaphylaxis to a vaccine or injectable therapy are still recommended and encouraged to get the vaccine when vaccine is made available to them.”Data from clinical trials of the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine show there is very little risk to the majority of people who receive the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the release. There are side effects to the vaccine because it stimulates the body's immune system. The release so far, those effects have included fever, fatigue, headache, chills and soreness at the injection site. They usually do not last longer than a day or two, according to IDHW. 5,665 people have received the COVID-19 vaccine in Idaho. For more information on the vaccine in Idaho, click here. Both the COVID-19 pandemic and conversations about race happening now are shining a light on mental health. One in five adults experience mental illness each year. Only one in three Black adults who need mental health care are getting it.The reasons range from socioeconomic disparities, like access to health insurance, to the stigma in the Black community around getting this care.Another issue, the latest numbers from the American Psychological Association show 4% of psychologists in the U.S. are Black.“You know, I think a lot of these guys, they've been going to the same barber since they were 5 years old or maybe only went to a couple of barbers in their whole life and so it's their relationship,” said Lorenzo Lewis, founder of The Confess Project, which trains barbers to become mental health advocates. That training includes learning active listening, positive communication, validation and stigma reduction.Lewis says the barbershop is a good place for this because it's really the only place in the Black community, besides the church, where everyone from all socioeconomic backgrounds come. And they visit more frequently than they would their own doctor. He says he recognized the need for mental health help among black men, but saw it wasn't accessible to them.He is hearing conversations in barbershops change especially now with the issues the Black community is facing.“I think, if nothing else, it is more of a preparation conversation around life success and what in which we know when individuals are successful in life, career, health and their relationships, that they will have a quality mental health,” said Lewis. The mental health training for barbers is being offered in some cities in person, or you can take the virtual course.
