WASHINGTON, D.C. — After millions upon millions of Americans cast their ballots on Election Day, the final vote for president – the one that really counts – comes down to 538 people who make up the Electoral College.Marla Blunt-Carter is one of them.“That thought of our ancestor who couldn't even write his name signing his voter registration card, at a time where really their vote didn't count, to being someone that is now voting in this electoral process,” she said. “It's indescribable.”Blunt-Carter is one of the three electors from Delaware. All three of them are Democrats because President-elect Joe Biden won his home state.“To be one of three that represents the Delaware voter that calls him their own is just huge,” Blunt-Carter said. “And then you look at the fact that the Vice president-elect is a woman of color - that is doubly amazing for me.”While she was selected by Delaware Democratic party officials to be an elector, in other states, you have to run for the privilege.“In our long history as a country, there have been very few people that have actually served in this role,” said Jonathan Fletcher, who is an elector from North Carolina.Fletcher ran to be an elector at the Republican State Convention, when it was held in North Carolina. He cast his vote for President Donald Trump, who carried the state.“It's kind of a lifelong dream,” he said. “I joke that it's a short lifelong dream – I'm only 28 – but it is a lifelong dream of mine.”The Electoral College and the popular vote don’t always match up. It’s happened five times in the country’s history, including twice in the 21st century, in 2000 and 2016. Some say that’s unfair and are calling for the Electoral College to be abolished.So, how do these electors feel about it?“It gives states like North Carolina, who are kind of middle of the pack in the electoral shuffle, it gives us a lot more equal standing with the rest of the country,” Fletcher said.Blunt-Carter said she sees why people would have some issues with the Electoral College.“I understand that people think that it is far past the time where we start to look at doing this differently,” she said. “But that's not the job of the elector. WAVERLY, Ohio — Four people are charged with planning and carrying out the murders of eight people in Pike County, Ohio in April 2016.Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader and Pike County Prosecutor Robert Junk announced the arrests Tuesday, more than two years after the investigation began. One of the suspects was arrested in Lexington, Kentucky. Their rallies were heard loudly and they have put pressure on lawmakers to enact gun reform during their visits to Tallahassee and during school walkouts. During a news conference, DeVos gave credit to the students for finding their voice and for taking interest in seeing what adults are going to do in response to the massacre. "People across the country in states and communities have addressed some of the concerns, some of the issues that have arisen here," DeVos said. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Inside one Washington D.C. bicycle repair shop is a cacophony of sounds, where both the bicycles and employees get a chance they may not have otherwise.“Working with your hands is still very important,” said Keith Jackson, operations manager at Gearin’ Up Bicycles.The nonprofit trains Black teens about everything it takes to run a bike shop.“For a lot of the young Black youth, this is really their only opportunity to get their feet wet in a bicycle business,” Jackson said.It’s an opportunity Daiquan Medley knows firsthand.“I’ve been here a long time now,” he said.Medley started coming to Gearin’ Up Bicycles several years ago, eventually working his way up to youth shop manager. It is quite a journey for someone who didn’t take to bicycling right away.“I couldn’t ride at first,” he said.Eventually, though, Medley picked it up and now envisions a future full of bicycles.“I would still have a full-service bike shop,” Medley said, “but then also have programs within it to actually still be able to teach people and they can learn how to maintain their bike on their own.”It’s an inspiration drawn from Gearin’ Up Bicycles, which helps young people build their own bicycles to keep and teaches them how to fix donated bikes that otherwise may have ended up in a landfill.“Our main goal obviously is workforce development, but I hope they get a sense of confidence and empowerment that they can do any job once they leave here,” said Lauren Shutler, the organization’s outreach coordinator.The repaired bicycles are then resold during Saturday sales, which have grown increasingly popular during the pandemic’s global bicycle shortage.“Our general sales are up 60%,” Jackson said. “Our bicycle sales are up 330% over last year.”The money from the sales then goes back into the nonprofit, though they say there’s always room for more.“As a nonprofit, we need people to come in and support us in that way,” Shutler said.It’s all part of the program to keep these wheels, and lives, in motion.“We've got them,” Jackson said.For more information on Gearin’ Up Bicycles and how you can help, click here. 2135
