SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers say more than 300 pounds of drugs were seized from a truck at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry this week.CBP officers say a tractor-trailer truck was stopped on Thursday at about 7 a.m. The driver was carrying a shipment of recycled cardboard, CBP said.The truck was referred to an imaging scan and exam, where an anomaly was detected in the truck's cab.CBP says officers removed 64 packages from two duffel bags hidden inside a sleeper compartment: 59 containing 286 pounds of methamphetamine and five bags containing 26 pounds of fentanyl.The narcotics, and tractor-trailer were seized and the driver, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen with a valid B1/B2 border-crossing card, was turned over to ICE and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges."Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we continue to see attempts to move hard narcotics across the border and into U.S. communities," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Candidates vying for the a seat in the 50th Congressional District reacted Monday to news that Rep. Duncan Hunter is set to change his plea to guilty in a campaign finance case. Documents show that Hunter is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday at 10 a.m. for a "change of plea hearing." Hunter said he would plead guilty to one count of misusing campaign funds in an interview with San Diego TV station KUSI. "My trial was set for January 22 -- that's not going to happen now. Tomorrow, on Tuesday, I'm going to change my plea to guilty. I think it's important not to have a public trial for three reasons, and those three reasons are my kids ... It's been a privilege to serve in Congress for 11 years, three tours in the Marine Corps in the wars. I think we've done a lot of great things for the nation."RELATED STORIES: Rep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol investigators are correcting their initial findings of a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 in February.In March, CHP said 35-year-old Justin Callahan was at fault for the fatal collision on the northbound I-5 transition ramp to westbound I-8 on Feb. 26 just before 2 a.m.Investigators had believed Callahan, driving in a Volkswagen Jetta, was traveling eastbound in the westbound I-8 lanes when he collided with a Toyota Camry on the transition ramp — a finding Callahan's family had contested.RELATED: Family disputes CHP's details of I-5 wrong-way crashCallahan died at the scene while two female occupants inside the Toyota suffered major injuries.Friday, CHP said they've now concluded the Toyota was traveling in the wrong direction when it collided with Callahan's vehicle on the ramp.Investigators also said the driver of the Toyota, 22-year-old Lauren Freeman, was found to be under the influence at the time of the crash.Freeman turned herself into San Diego Superior Court Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning drivers about a series of overnight closures along Interstate 5 over the next two weeks.From Sunday, November 4 through Thursday, November 8, northbound I-5 will be closed between La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue between 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.Northbound I-5 will also be closed from Tuesday, November 13 through Thursday, November 15 in the same area from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.CHECK TRAFFIC The agency is encouraging motorists to take an alternate route to avoid possible congestion.The section of the interstate will be closed so crews can remove the temporary wooden structures from the new Gilman Drive Bridge over I-5. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Attention is now turning to the southern border after Wednesday's border closure with Canada.On Thursday, the walkway into Tijuana was nearly empty but the San Ysidro Port of Entry remains open, for the time being. “It's going to have major implications for us, particularly for us here in Southern California, if we see a closing of the U.S.-Mexico border,” says Dr. David Shirk with the University of San Diego, where he works as a professor with an area of expertise in U.S.-Mexico relations. If CBP observes a traveler with symptoms of COVID-19, we will refer them to the (CDC) and or DHS medical contractors for enhanced health screening.
