A major earthquake Tuesday night struck the territory of New Caledonia, sparking tsunami alerts. The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.5 and rattled the area just after 8 p.m., according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake struck just over 100 miles east southeast of Tadine, New Caledonia. According to the USGS, waves between three and nine feet above the tide level are possible along some coasts of New Caledonia and Vanuatu. A growing number of Hispanics along the Texas-Mexico border with birth records showing they were born in the United States are being denied American passports, held in immigration detention centers, and entered into deportation proceedings, immigration attorneys and individuals affected told the Washington Post.According to the Post report, the issue stems from a government allegation that from the 1950s through the 1990s, midwives and physicians working along the border issued American birth certificates to babies born in Mexico, which some birth attendants have admitted to in court.The State Department, the Post said, denies changing its "policy or practice regarding the adjudication of passport applications." A man is dead after falling off a ladder while cutting a tree branch following Hurricane Irma.Hillsborough County, Florida Fire Rescue responded to Puritan Road in Tampa, at approximately 2:54 p.m. on Thursday, after receiving a call about a person down.Upon arrival, firefighters found 60-year-old John Knight on the ground.According to a witness, Knight was cutting a tree branch when it hit him and knocked him off his ladder, causing him to fall between 20 to 25 feet.Firefighters pronounced Knight dead at the scene. 559

A candidate for mayor in a Texas town outside Dallas is facing voter fraud charges after allegedly sending in 84 applications for ballots.Zul Mohamed is a mayoral candidate in Carrolton. He now faces 25 counts of knowingly possessing a ballot with intent to defraud and 84 counts of providing false information on a voting application, according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.Paxton’s office alleges Mohamed “obtained a virtual mailbox using a false identity, forged at least 84 voter registration applications for unwitting Denton residents and had them sent to a fraudulent location.”When he was arrested, Mohamed was reportedly in the process of stuffing envelopes with additional mail ballot applications for a nearby county.County officials began their investigation after Denton County officials noticed several absentee ballots were being mailed to the same post office box, according to the Texas Tribune.It is not clear from the investigation if any ballots were actually cast or mailed in.If Mohamed is found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in prison. 1081
