The Lockport City School District thinks it could soon be a national model for school security. Superintendent Michelle Bradley said the district is installing 300 new security cameras loaded with a new high tech software. The software recognizes people who pose a threat, like terminated employees, sex offenders, suspended students, or someone carrying a gun. Then, it alerts police or school leaders. “It will add another layer of security to what we already have,” Bradley said. It will be the first security system of its kind in any public school in the United States. It will be installed in all 10 buildings owned by Lockport School District. Tony Olivo with Corporate Screening & Investigative Group, LLC is working with Canadian owned SN Technologies to get th\e high-tech system into more buildings in western New York.“We’ve actually been looking to deplore this type of technology in hospitals, health care organizations, as well as places like malls,” Olivo said. The new system is just part of the changes Lockport Public Schools have made to security recently. The school also just installed new doors and a sign-in system, which cost close to million dollars.The projects are being funded by the Smart School Bond Act of 2014 — a referendum allowing the state to give schools money for safety following the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. More than 200 school across New York are on the waiting list for approval for funds from the act. The recognition system will be installed in Lockport schools over the summer. The Miami Marlins announced Friday that they had hired Kim Ng as their new general manager, making Ng the first female GM in MLB history.According to ESPN, Ng is now the highest-ranking woman employed by any of the 30 MLB teams and is likely the first woman to hold the title of general manager for any major pro sports team — though other women, like former Oakland Raiders CEO Amy Trask and Los Angeles Lakers President Jeanie Buss have held executive roles with pro sports teams.Ng is also the second person of Asian descent to lead the baseball operations of an MLB team, following in the footsteps of Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi."This challenge is one I don't take lightly. When I got into this business, it seemed unlikely a woman would lead a Major League team, but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals," Ng said in a statement. The owl rescued from the Rockefeller Christmas tree is being memorialized by Frontier Airlines.On Tuesday, the airline company announced that the northern saw-whet owl, which was discovered in the Rockefeller Christmas tree last month, will be featured on the tail of their new Airbus A320neo aircraft.The aircraft is set to roll out sometime in 2021.“We’re always looking for new ideas for our plane tails, and when we heard the story of Rocky, we thought it entirely befitting that this intrepid little owl is honored on one of our tails,” said Tyri Squyres, vice president of marketing, Frontier Airlines in a press release. “Rocky will be remembered for years to come with her very special story enjoyed by thousands of travelers who fly on ‘Rocky the Owl.’”Rocky will join more than 100 other animals that are featured on tails in the Frontier fleet, the company said.After being rescued from the Christmas tree, Rocky was released back into the wild last month. 975

This time around, it'll be aired on Joanna and Chip Gaines' Magnolia Network.The show originally aired for five seasons on HGTV, with the last episode airing in 2018. But starting in 2021, the show will make its way to a new home, the renovating duo announced in a blog post on their website on Tuesday. “The day we wrapped our final episode of ‘Fixer Upper,’ we really believed it was a chapter closed," the couple said in the blog post. The Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" increased the suicide risk of suicidal teens treated in a psychiatric emergency department, according to a University of Michigan study.Upon release, the show received backlash for its depiction of suicide, as some critics said it glorified those who took their own lives. In addition, another study showed that the show was tied to a rise in online searches about suicide.“This show has been a real phenomenon, especially among teenagers,” Victor Hong, M.D., medical director of psychiatric emergency services at Michigan Medicine, said in a release. “Its depiction of teen suicide has raised great concern among parents, health providers and educators.” Half of the 87 youths, mostly teens ages 13 to 17, who participated in the survey between 2017 and 2018 had watched at least one episode of the show. Among the 43 who watched it, about half said it heightened their suicide risk.“Our study doesn’t confirm that the show is increasing suicide risk, but it confirms that we should definitely be concerned about its impact on impressionable and vulnerable youth,” Hong said.According to the study, very few parents of those in the sample had watched the series themselves and some were not even aware that their child had watched it. “The data from our sample of teens demonstrated that kids who were at high risk of suicide did not reach out to adults,” Hong said. “They mostly watched the show alone or talked to friends, but they weren’t talking to parents, teachers or school counselors.For more information on the study, click here. 1613
