Smash Mouth says they've received hate mail from fans after taking part in a concert during an event that's since been linked to the spread of more than 100 cases of COVID-19.The band performed an Aug. 9 concert at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota in front of a closely-grouped crowd. Many of those in attendance were not wearing masks. During the performance, lead singer Steve Harwell was heard saying, "f*** that Covid s***."In the weeks since the event, at least 103 cases of COVID-19 have been linked directly to the Sturgis rally. And while it's unclear how many of those cases (if any) are linked directly to the Smash Mouth concert, the band has faced criticism since its performance.Earlier this week, the band posted a video of "recent fan mail" that they've received. SPRING HILL, Fla. -- A Florida mother was arrested on Wednesday after deputies say she left her 3-year-old son home alone while she went out drinking. Hernando County deputies responded a home in Spring Hill after receiving a tip that a child was at the home without supervision. Deputies attempted to contact the 3-year-old boy around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. When deputies arrived they saw Kristen Broker, 27, being dropped off at the home. The deputy asked Broker if she knew the child. Broker told the deputy that he was her son. The deputy then asked if she knew whether or not the child was in the home alone.Deputies say that Broker told them that she knew the child was home alone. She told them that he was sleeping inside.Deputies found the young boy awake inside the home. He was in a queen sized bed with no guardrails, according to HCSO. "[The boy] appeared to be scared as to where his mother was," HCSO wrote in a press release.Deputies say that the only other adult who lives at the home was Broker's boyfriend, who was at work.Broker told deputies that she was at a local bar. Deputies say she appeared to be extremely intoxicated. She told deputies that she had been drinking since 1 p.m. on Tuesday, according to HCSO.Broker said she had consumed some rum and cokes and some beers, according to HCSO. Deputies say that she claimed she was only gone for "30 minutes," and that her son was asleep when she left.The child was clearly awake when deputies arrived at the home.Deputies say that Broker appeared almostBroker didn't appear to think it was an issue to leave her child home for any amount of time, according to the arrest affidavit.Broker was arrested on one count of child neglect, booked into the Hernando County Jail under a ,000 bond. SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV)-- While protesters in the streets are loud, some are taking a much quieter approach to support the Black Lives Matter movement. One viral post is driving people to many Black-owned businesses in San Diego. The magical seasonings behind David Bankhead's soul food are a secret. But the owner of Bankhead Mississippi Style Cookin' in Spring Valley says what is not a secret are the racial tensions still evident in America."You know I come out of Mississippi, so I was born into some of the things that are going on right now," Bankhead said. He says he supports the protests. He even took part in #blackouttuesday on his restaurant's social media pages. But the violence, he cannot condone. "When you're tearing up stuff in your own neighborhood, that's not helping the cause at all," Bankhead said. Since opening up his restaurant eight years ago, he had seen great success. But since the coronavirus pandemic hit, his shop has taken a 40% hit. On Tuesday, however, his store was suddenly packed."We had all nationalities come in," manager, Betty King said. "Hispanics, Caucasians, obviously African-Americans... it was it was amazing."It was the day an Instagram post calling San Diegans to support black-owned eateries went viral. SOLANA BEACH (KGTV) - The heat wave is creating a stomach-turning sight at some of San Diego's North County Beaches.Water temperatures near 80 degrees are keeping local beaches packed. Lili Waters spends a lot of time at Table Top Beach, just north of Fletcher Cove, in Solana Beach. Tuesday was not the perfect beach day she expected."Normally, this is a really nice beach, but it's been absolutely horrible today," said Waters.She noticed an unusual amount of kelp and flies along the shoreline."Then, I looked down and I was like, hey, kids there's maggots all over the ground and they're like what, I said look down there's maggots and then they started running," said Waters.Seagulls are feeding on the maggots which are all over the beach near the piles of kelp."It's pretty disgusting," said Waters.What's disgusting to beachgoers is actually important to the marine life."As the kelp breaks down, the flies create larvae, and then the birds eat the larvae, the larvae is washed into the ocean, the fish eat the larvae it creates nutrients and food for shore birds," said San Diego Lifeguard Captain Jason Shook.Shook said the heat is killing the kelp which is attracting flies. Beaches from Torrey Pines to Carlsbad may see large piles of kelp wash up during the summer months."Those large reefs trap the kelp and then the kelp washes a shore in that area," said Captain Shook.Some visitors complained to lifeguards, but there's little they can do."It happens generally in the warmer months and it usually coincides with the grunion season, which is March through the end of August. So, then we are restricted on our beach-raking areas. We are not allowed to rake the beach along the high tide line so the kelp will build up a little bit," said Captain Shook."There's a ton of seaweed. It's all wrapping around your feet when you're in there, like I said, it's horrible," said Waters.Although it's unpleasant for visitors, it's important to the food chain."Some people don't want to be bothered by the kelp when they go to the beach. They don't like the smell, and the stuff that it brings along like the larvae, but it is a natural occurrence," said Captain Shook. "It's a really fragile ecosystem that we need to respect." 2275
