A controversial bill that would force clergy members to report some confessions will come to a vote next week. The proposed bill would not apply to all confessions between a member of the clergy and their congregation. It would only cover suspected cases of possible child abuse or neglect. If the bill gets approved, then members of the church would be classified as mandated reporters for the first time in history. Clergy members, like priests, who do not comply with the law, should it pass, could face possible prosecution.Critics of the proposed bill say priests in the Roman Catholic Church could be excommunicated if forced to reveal confessions. The bill was recently approved in the Senate Public Safety Committee in a unanimous five to zero vote. The next hearing is set for Aprill 22. 804

A 27-year-old man has confessed to killing US scientist Suzanne Eaton on the Greek island of Crete, a police spokesperson told CNN Monday. The local man had been detained by police for questioning, after the 59-year-old molecular biologist went missing July 2 while attending a conference.More details are expected to be announced Tuesday, Crete police said.Eaton was attending a conference at the Orthodox Academy when she disappeared, apparently during a run.Last Monday, her body was discovered by two locals deep inside a cave, according to Crete's Chief of Police Konstantinos Lagoudakis. She was found around 60 meters (nearly 200 feet) inside the cave, beneath an air shaft that had been covered by a large wooden pallet. The underground caverns had been turned into a bunker by Nazi soldiers during the Second World War.The police said that Eaton had been asphyxiated. Minor stab wounds were also found on her body, but police said they were not believed to be the cause of her death. The police believe the body was dumped inside the cave, because it was found face down.Lagoudakis told CNN on Thursday that he had never seen a case like this in his four years as police chief.'A truly wonderful person'Tributes from Eaton's relatives -- including her mother, son and siblings -- 1299

A Franklin County patrol deputy saw an unusual sight last week: a car driving down the road with a street sign sticking out of the front. You can probably guess what happened next. In a 198

The challenge #TrashTag is a viral trend taking over social media. People all over are cleaning up the environment and sharing it online. Although a new trend online, it’s something nature lover Caitlin Deporter has already been doing for nearly a decade. The beauty of the outdoors is something Deporter has always cherished. "It's just grown from a young age, an appreciation for everything natural," Deporter says. She spends a lot of her time hiking near the Potomac River in Maryland. "My dad and I usually do our big hiking trips together," she says. Along those hikes, Deporter says she sees a lot of garbage. "There are a lot of beer cans and bottles, I will tell you that," she says. Americans produce more than 250 million tons of waste annually, according to the EPA. Keep America Beautiful reports .5 billion is spent yearly cleaning it all up. However, Deporter is doing one simple thing to curb those statistics. “I'll bring a normal size trash bag and a backpack and get prepared for a day of work,” she says. For the last eight years, on her bi-weekly hikes, she brings a trash bag with her every time, picking up all the litter she sees along the way. "I'm concentrating on getting trash where it's supposed to be," she says. She does something small to help combat a big problem. "I'm just one person; I can only do so much," she says. She’s hoping the #TrashTag movement keeps up, for the sake of the environment."I hope this whole trend really sticks, and it's not just you know people do it for a week to get all their photos in and look all cool, you know,” Deporter says. “I really hope people continue to do it." 1658

A backpack holding an incendiary device and items that could be used for an abduction were beneath the car in which a retired administrator was found stabbed to death on the campus of California State University Fullerton, authorities said Monday. The victim was identified by Fullerton police as Steven Shek Keung Chan, 57, of Hacienda Heights. He'd retired from the school but worked at the international student affairs office as a consultant, officials said. His body was found with multiple stab wounds inside the vehicle in a campus parking lot, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene."Investigators now believe the victim was targeted based on their investigation," Fullerton police said in a statement.Police are looking for the attacker, who is described as a man in his mid-20s with black hair, wearing a black shirt and black pants. The backpack was left by Chan's assailant, said Fullerton police Lt. Jon Radus. The city's police force is leading the investigation. No motive was disclosed. The Orange County Sheriff's Department bomb squad found the backpack, Radus said. There is no known threat to the community, he said.Police were on campus attending an active shooter filming, which was later canceled, police said.President Fram Virjee called the killing a "tragic and senseless attack," in a letter to the school community."He was beloved for his commitment to and passion for both Cal State Fullerton and our Titan Family," Virjee said of the slain teacher in his letter.Chan had retired as a budget director in 2017 and returned early in 2019 to work as a consultant, the letter said.Monday marked the first day of the 2019-2020 academic year. Classes at the Southern California school start Saturday. 1741
