SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Foundation announced Tuesday a million donation to UC San Diego to help establish a school of public health.UCSD plans to match the gift and hopes to raise another million to construct a school of public health building pending approval by the University of California. The gift from the Wertheim Foundation is dependent on whether UC's leadership approves UCSD's request."Public health is a field of study and practice that endows individuals and communities with the ability to promote health and prevent disease," said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted Monday to place two ballot measures on the March 2020 ballot, including a hotel tax hike that would fund a convention center expansion, homeless services and infrastructure improvements.The tax increase proposed by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer would raise the city's transient occupancy tax from 10.5% to as high as 15.75% in certain areas of the city, which supporters argue would reap an estimated billion over 42 years.The funding would allow the city to purchase a parcel of land adjacent to the convention center that is currently owned by Fifth Avenue Landing. Once it purchases the land, the city would expand the convention center by roughly 400,000 square feet, from roughly 800,000 square feet to about 1.2 million square feet.RELATED: Hotel tax increase proposed for San DiegoThe land cost is expected to be roughly million, part of an estimated allocation of .5 billion for the purchase and convention center upkeep and marketing. "The administration shouldn't be in charge of choosing who is overseeing the administration. This ballot measure will help ensure this important position is truly independent."Under the proposed measure, the Audit Committee would recruit and choose three candidates for the city auditor position. The council would then choose one of the three candidates to serve as the city auditor for a pair of five-year terms.Since the position was established in 2009, the city has only had one official city auditor, Eduardo Luna, who served nearly all of his term before leaving for a similar position with the city of Beverley Hills in October 2018.Sherman, the Audit Committee chair, proposed the measure after Faulconer appointed DeeDee Alari, a deputy director in the city treasurer's office, to the position in July. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The median price of a home in San Diego County rose by 8 percent in July, compared with the same month a year earlier, a real estate information service announced Thursday.According to CoreLogic, the median price of a San Diego County home was 9,750 last month, up from 7,000 in July 2017. A total of 3,607 homes were sold in the county, down 3.5 percent from 3,739 during the same month the previous year.A total of 21,277 new and resale houses and condos changed hands in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties last month, according to CoreLogic. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved spending million in federal pandemic-related funding to help child care providers, testing in schools and meals for senior citizens.The board directed million to child care providers, who have been struggling to stay afloat since March, in the form of grants.The county will also spend .8 million on senior food programs -- including an expanded Great Plates program that involves prepared meals delivered to the elderly -- while also supporting participating restaurants.The board voted to spend million to support the county Department of Public Health's testing, tracing and treatment strategy dedicated for kindergarten through 12th-grade schools.Last month, the board directed the county's chief administrative officer to make recommendations on how to spend the money.To implement the child care grants, CAO Helen Robbins-Meyer will negotiate agreements with The San Diego Foundation, the YMCA of San Diego County and Child Development Associates, Inc.Supervisor Jim Desmond said while he has been critical of Great Plates program, based on the costs per meal, he understands it helps restaurants while also helping shut-in seniors who may not have any social interaction otherwise.Desmond added that if there's money left over from the program or school testing, it should go towards area food banks.In related actions following an update on county COVID-19 prevention efforts, the board approved Desmond's motion for a waiver to the school- closures mandate.The board also approved a separate motion allowing county enforcement of businesses -- in terms of complying with reopening requirements -- based on Phase 2 mandates. 1741
