ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Census Bureau has sped up the timetable on its website for crunching 2020 census numbers. On its website Friday, the bureau listed the deadline for processing data used to apportion the districts as Dec. 31. As recently as Thursday, it had listed a time frame of Oct. 31, 2020 to April 30, 2021 — an estimate based on a request for an extension that it submitted to Congress in April.The request passed the Democratic-controlled House as part of coronavirus-relief legislation but is now stalled in the Senate. The chamber’s inaction coincides with a memorandum Trump issued last week to try to exclude people living in the U.S. illegally from being included during the process for redrawing congressional districts.Civil rights activists worry the sped-up deadline could affect the thoroughness of the count. The census determines how .5 trillion in federal spending is distributed and how many congressional districts each state gets. Census Bureau officials have said it would be impossible to meet the year-end deadline.The current response rate is roughly 60 percent of the country, leaving four out of ten households needing to be officially counted. Of all the campaign slogans for 2020, Allison Ali is following motherly advice from her childhood.“My Mama always said, ‘if you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice,’” she said. “So, it’s put up or shut up.”Ali is taking those wise words on the road and also taking voters to the polls for free.“It’s important to me, because everybody needs to be heard,” she said.This election season, Ali is one of hundreds of people working for the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America during a campaign called “Roll to the Polls.”“We have a real opportunity to impact the elections,” said NACA CEO Bruce Marks.Marks’ team has 100 vans in Atlanta and 50 more in Houston with a goal of getting 100,000 voters from their houses to their polling locations free of charge.“It is very emotional because we’ve been through a lot,” Marks said of these free rides. “We’ve seen the voter suppression and we’ve seen how people’s rights are taken away. So, it’s crucial that everybody’s voice is heard.”Across the country, rideshare apps, colleges and even some concerned citizens are offering voters free rides to the election sites.While some political science experts warn that free rides could be used as a way to manipulate voters, others are calling it a sign of inspiration.“I want to do my part, honestly, to get them out,” said Atlanta-based voter Pamela Chaney, a self-described vibrant senior.Chaney says this election is the most crucial of her lifetime and that’s why she’s now thinking about volunteering to drive voters to polls, especially those in her community, where public transportation isn’t an option.“A lot of people probably want to come out, but they don’t have the means; transportation. They’re probably elderly,” she said.According to the American Association of Retired People, 71% of Americans over the age of 65 voted during the last presidential election, a group Ali hopes to steer clear from any of kind of voter suppression.“We have people who think their votes aren’t going to count,” she said. “They don’t think the mail is going to get their in time. That’s a scary thing.”While behind the wheel, Ali is still following her mother’s advice and driving down a road that others helped pave the way.“We have ancestors that fought for us to be able to come out here and vote,” she said. “This election for me is very important.” 2355

OMAHA, Nebraska — Just before 5 p.m local time Monday, Omaha Police were called to the scene of a traffic incident involving a school bus near an intersection in North Omaha. Police later confirmed the boy, 8-year-old Haji Mohamed of Omaha, had died. According to a report from OPD received Monday night, "the investigation revealed that a Student Transportation of America school bus had come to a stop along Sprague Street just east of 22nd Street at a designated student drop off location."After several students disembarked the bus, the bus driver continued her route westbound on Sprague Street," the report states. "As the bus was traveling between 22nd Street and 23rd Street, an 8-year old male child who had just disembarked the bus, attempted to run across Sprague Street from north to south. As soon as the child entered the roadway, he was struck by the bus."The boy was transported by emergency personnel to Nebraska Medicine in extremely critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the boy was pronounced dead, the OPD release states.  Early OPD reports indicated the elementary-aged boy was transported with "extremely critical injuries" to Nebraska Medicine, said Sgt. Chuck Casey of the OPD incident unit, who gave an update near the scene. Omaha Public Schools later confirmed in a statement that the injured boy is a second-grader from Springville?Elementary School, located near 60th and Girard streets, about five miles northwest of the incident.The boy's family was with him at the hospital, Casey said.Early reports indicated the boy was struck by the front of the bus — the only vehicle involved in the incident — but the scene will be under investigation for some time, he said."At this time, Omaha Public Schools administrators, Student Transportation of America and OPS Student Transportation are cooperating with the Omaha Police Department as they investigate the incident," according to a statement from OPS early Monday evening. "Administrators are also supporting and working with the family of the student."Casey said initial reports were that the boy was a passenger on the bus. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Police say a Navy veteran who was sentenced last year to nearly a decade in prison for abusing his neighbors' dogs may be released early because of the pandemic.David C. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - An Oceanside man says his dog is healing from a close encounter with a coyote that was caught on his doorbell camera. CC, a 13-year-old Maltipoo, was attacked by the coyote Wednesday about 9 p.m. at her home on Morgan Creek Way. “Thinking I’m never going to see her again,” said Joe Vines Jr., CC’s owner. Video from the Ring camera shows CC scurrying into the front yard as Vines locks his door. He was about to put CC in the car to run errands when he heard her cry for help. Vines turned around to find CC in the coyote’s jaws. RELATED: Dog named Roadrunner escapes coyote in chase down Vista street“His whole mouth was around her body, holding her like that,” Vines said. “In my head I’m thinking, I’m not going to let me dog….I’m not going to let her leave in someone's mouth.” Vines chased down the coyote, which dropped CC nearby. CC had several deep bites. She suffered two broken ribs and now has breathing problems. Vines will keep a closer eye on his dog from now on. The Helen Woodward Animal Center said it has been receiving more reports of coyote attacks than ever before.
