SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a California community college instructor with ties to the far-right extremist "boogaloo" movement is in custody on suspicion of sending misogynistic and threatening letters to a county health officer involving the pandemic. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday that deputies arrested 55-year-old Alan Viarengo and seized 138 firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition from his home in Gilroy. Viarengo is charged with felony counts of stalking and threatening a public official. Dr. Sara Cody, the health officer for Santa Clara County, has been one of the nation's most visible proponents of social distancing and wearing masks. His attorney defended Viarengo as a respected professor. 755

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – California has confirmed its first openly gay justice to the state’s supreme court.Martin J. Jenkins made history Tuesday as he was confirmed as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California. The appointment was approved by a unanimous vote in the supreme court courtroom in San Francisco.Justice Jenkins fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Ming Chin on Aug. 31, according to a press release from the state’s judicial branch.Along with being the state’s first openly gay justice, he’s also only the third African American man ever to serve on the court. The judicial branch says Jenkins has held several prominent state and federal judicial positions throughout his career, with his most recent being the governor’s judicial appointments secretary.Prior to his role with the governor, Jenkins served as an associate justice on the First District Court of Appeal from 2008 to 2019. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in 1997 and served on that bench until 2008.Jenkins earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law. 1180

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - After seven years of planning and more than a year of construction, Mast Park in Santee is almost ready to reopen. The new park features all modern technology and brand new amenities, but planners wanted to make sure it kept its original feel of being surrounded by nature."If you think of Santee's parks along the river as a string of pearls, this one was the oldest and needed some polishing," says Bill Maertz, the City of Santee's Director of Community Services."We've kept the feel of the natural park," he adds. "So we have a brand new park here, but we've got 100-year-old trees here."The park's new features include three picnic shelters, a larger parking lot with electric car charging stations, three larger dog parks, a nature discovery play area, a forest-themed playground, a new basketball court, and an enhanced disc golf course. There are also more than 100 new trees planted throughout the 80-acre park, as well as native and drought-resistant landscaping."A portion of the park is part of the San Diego River Trail. So we wanted to keep that natural experience along the river," says Maertz.Multiple public meetings also showed that the community wanted to help kids build a connection to nature through the park."Children have a nature deficit disorder, there's too much time with screens, TVs and stuff," says Maertz. "So, we're trying to get them reconnected back to nature."The park will also have an active storm-water drainage system that runs through it like a river. Water runoff from nearby apartment complexes and businesses will filter through the park, with natural elements helping to clean it and block debris and trash from entering the San Diego River. The city built 12 bridges in the park to let people walk over the runoff areas like they're walking through a forest."The only reason we have 12 bridges is that we didn't have room for 13," jokes Maertz. The park will also have new bathrooms and a concession stand. It will sell burgers, drinks, and also dog treats and toys.City leaders hope to have a grand opening in February."We already have an amazing park system, and this just adds the frosting on the cake," says Maertz. For full details of the project, click here. 2239

SANDUSKY, Ohio - Luggage lost in the wind with a Sandusky, Ohio man's supply of life-saving medication inside.Alvin Rogers was taking the Greyhound bus from Sandusky to Pensacola, Florida in September. His headache started in Atlanta."They were telling me I couldn't go to Pensacola because of the storm," said Rogers.Rogers' insulin pens, similar to the medicine he lost in the bags that can't be found by Greyhound. Hurricane Florence delayed Rogers, but while he was stuck, Alvin was told his three bags were sent to Pensacola on another bus."I said, 'Well, how can my luggage go to Pensacola in a storm and I can't," asked Rogers. "I mean, it's still gotta be on the bus."That was the first time Rogers was separated from his bags and the thousands of dollars worth of medicine that he needed for an extended trip. When Rogers finally got to Pensacola a day later, the bags were nowhere to be found."So I had to wind up buying a plane ticket to get back to Ohio so I could get my doctors to get me some more meds," said Rogers.Rogers' bus and plane tickets bringing him to Pensacola, Florida and back to Ohio.A month later, back in Sandusky, Rogers still doesn't have his bags even after constant calls from Roger's roommate, Karin Lucas."A fiasco," said Lucas, describing when she calls Greyhound. "I get transferred constantly. Representatives pass the buck."Rogers and Lucas say when they reach out to Greyhound for help, they're surprised when a live person is on the other end of the line.Lucas says they could get 0 for each of the three lost bags through the Greyhound claim process. But the emergency plane ticket was nearly 0 itself. The original Greyhound ticket was about 0, including the extra money Rogers paid to get help loading and unloading the luggage and Rogers can't get that money back."For all the good it did, I still wound up losing everything," said Rogers.Roger's claim form identifies ,000 worth of medicine and personal items lost in the bags."Everything he owns was in those bags because he planned on relocating," said Lucas.Lucas says when she reaches out to Greyhound for help, she gets nowhere."For them to be as nonchalant about the situation is really really sad," said Lucas. The Cleveland Greyhound Station, where Rogers says his bags might arrive if they are ever found.Greyhound said they are still looking for the bags. Even once they are found, Alvin says he'll likely have to pick up his bags at the bus station in Cleveland or one of Ohio's other bigger cities. Rogers said he's been told Greyhound won't deliver bags to smaller pickup spots like Sandusky.Back in April, a bizarre Greyhound trip left Cleveland for New York City before turning around before a problem with the bus. Then, the city went all the way to Toledo because the driver missed the exit for Cleveland. Back then, riders said Greyhound was not very helpful finding a solution and did not offer refunds. 2963

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Santee business is empowering veterans to help heal themselves and become independent with yoga. The veterans behind the program say it’s a union of mind and body that can also lead to a paycheck. The business is called Hot Yoga and it’s located in Santee. The business was opened two years ago by Marine veteran John Szczepanowski. John is a combat veteran whose service spans decades including the Persian Gulf in 1989 and later in Iraq and Afghanistan.John retired from the military in 2014 and discovered yoga a year later thanks to a friend. John dove in and became certified as a yoga instructor. The practice was something he wanted to share with others, specifically infantry men and women and Navy corpsman who serve on the front lines.10News was able to capture a day of classes in which 1o active-duty military members took part. Those in attendance had the opportunity not only to see how it feels, but to explore a skill they may use to support themselves.John says if they choose, the veterans can apply for what he is calling a “Warrior Yoga Scholarship” which will provide them with tuition if they choose to become a certified yoga instructor. For more information click here.  1229
