But one of the fiercest rivalry college football games will have to wait a few more weeks due to the massive Camp Fire burning in Northern California. Due to the poor air quality in the Bay Area from the Camp Fire, Saturday's Stanford/California football game has been postponed until Dec. 1. The game will take place one day after the Pac 12 championship game, but both teams have already been eliminated from contention. As of Friday, the Camp Fire has killed at least 63, and hundreds are missing. The game, which was going to be held on California's Berkley campus, is just one of many college sporting events being postponed this weekend due to poor air quality. "We have been carefully tracking air quality in Berkeley and the Bay Area over the past week, relying on the best data and guidance available to us from medical and environmental experts," California's Athletic Director Knowlton said. "The forecasts we have received show a minimal chance of the improvement necessary to hold the game on Saturday. This year, the number of school shootings in the United States has dropped tremendously because of the pandemic.According to the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, there has only been one shooting inside a school building since March; an accidental discharge of a firearm inside North Forney High School in Forney, Texas that happened before pandemic shutdowns began.It may be one silver lining in a year many wish to forget.But just because numbers are down, does not mean schools are not still prioritizing active shooter drills.According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a public advocacy group, 95 percent of K-12 schools implement active shooter drills, but the number can vary by state. For instance, in New York State, schools are required to have four lockdown drills per year, whereas in New Jersey the requirement is two.Since the pandemic started, most states have required those same number of drills despite some students choosing to learn from home, in-person restrictions, and social distancing.“We had to redesign the entire drill,” said John McDonald, executive director of security and emergency management at JeffCo Public Schools in Colorado. “We had to redesign what it looked like. How do you socially distance when you’re locking down?”McDonald laid the blueprint for school safety across the country when he was brought in by the JeffCo Public School District to implement new safety measures after the Columbine School Shooting in 1999.In the COVID-19 world, students in his school district are now learning about active shooter drills through a three-minute video presentation he helped design.“We have kids learning [these active shooter lessons] since kindergarten,” said McDonald. “So, this helps supplement that and reinforce that muscle memory.”In the Syracuse School District in New York, however, the drills are a little different than in Colorado.“I think that there’s always a need to balance the safety of the potentially very worst day with the challenges of safety and student well-being that schools face every single day,” said Jaclyn Schildkraut, a criminal justice professor at SUNY-Oswego.Schildkraut helped the Syracuse school district redesign its plans following COVID-19. Instead of the normal drills, where a full class might huddle together out of sight of windows, Schildkraut says students are now broken up into smaller groups of four students to help reduce close exposure to one another during drills.She says those groups also practice the drills on different days to keep things efficient.Schildkraut and McDonald agree that since the pandemic, the drills focus on threat assessment. In day-to-day school functions, COVID-19 is the primary threat to student safety, so social-distancing rules are implemented even during drills. But if an emergency arises, they say that becomes the more imminent threat so that will be treated as the priority, even if it means social distancing cannot be followed.“If we have to go into a lockdown while we’re in school, even in the COVID world, we’re going to go into lockdown because that’s the threat that’s in front of us in that moment in time,” said McDonald. 3167

Thousands of Qualcomm workers are facing uncertainty as the San Diego tech giant considers Broadcom's 0 billion takeover bid. Analysts say a takeover could include layoffs.If that happens, those displaced workers may actually find their next job in a craft brewery or coffee shop. That opportunity stems from Qualcomm's 2015 layoff of 1,300 local workers.At the time, the San Diego Workforce Partnership decided not to hold a traditional job fair. The organization is charged with helping laid off workers find new jobs. But CEO Peter Callstrom said the traditional job fair wouldn't work, and opted for a more relaxed environment."We can do it with some great craft brew and conversation and find that next career path," he said. The partnership came up with a smaller, happy hour style job fair, where former Qualcomm workers could connect with local tech employers like ESET and Tritech Software Systems. It worked. And last year the White House honored the program. Now, hiring at Happy Hour events are taking place at craft breweries - and coffee shops - across the county, focusing on fields like health care, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and clean energy. The events are free and open to the public but you have to register ahead of time. Tofu, the red panda — a recent addition at?Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium — died Tuesday, according to a press release from the zoo today.The preliminary pathology report indicated that the 3-year-old red panda, which arrived in Omaha from the Detroit Zoo in October 2017 and joined the new Asian Highlands exhibit in May, likely died of a condition that is known to afflict the species, according to the release.Tofo had excess fluid in her abdomen and chest cavity, "a finding that is most commonly observed in cases of heart failure or cardiomyopathy... (which) are population-wide health issues within the red panda species," the release states.The red panda could have also died of inflammation of the heart from bacterial or viral causes, the release states.According to the release, the Omaha zoo "intends to collaborate with other pathologists and scientists regarding their findings in hopes to better understand these health issues."The zoo still exhibits two red pandas: one female and one male, the release states. 1054
