SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Long wait times have always been a problem at the DMV, the way to avoid that was to make an appointment online to skip the long lines. For people needing to renew their license like Debby Herscovitz, they had to plans months in advance, “I went online, booked an appointment, but I had no idea it was going to be in March”. Herscovitz got a notification from the DMV in the mail to renew her license back in December and immediately tried to make an appointment. She tells us the first available time slot was at the end of March, “I absolutely had no idea it was going to take that long”. A DMV representative tells 10News, drivers are trying to avoid the hours long line at the DMV by making an appointment online. Because so many people are scheduling appointments, the appointments are filling up faster than ever before. For Herscovitz, her appointment would have taken a total of 15 minutes to get her Real ID, however she didn’t have all the necessary documents. The DMV tells 10News to help people adjust to the new requirements and be prepared for their appointments they have a video people can watch before they make the trip in. Despite having to plan months in advance, the DMV says it’s still the best idea to schedule an appointment online before heading to a nearby office. Tips to keep in mind that could help with the scheduling process: don’t rule out nearby offices because some might not be as busy as others. Also, continue to check back online to see if any cancellations were made. Here in San Diego, there are also a few offices with extended hours and that are open on Saturdays. The Chula Vista DMV opens an hour earlier on certain days of the week. Poway, San Marcos, Chula Vista and Clairemont have Saturday appointments available. 1788

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local groups including the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, are pushing for the City of San Diego to draft up and pass an ordinance that excludes certain zoning policies. "We're not asking to spend billions of dollars and build something, we're saying change the zoning. They have the prerogative, it's under their jurisdiction, we're reminding them there are issues at stake and those issues are communities to this day that are segregated," said Ricardo Flores, executive director of LISC.Flores says the same areas that were identified back in 1930 by San Diego banks as low-income areas are still falling under that category today. Additionally, areas outside of those remain zoned for single-family homes, keeping the lower income families from moving in. "So, what we’re effectively saying is, if you can't buy a single-family home in Kensington, then you can't live in Kensington. But, that’s not the truth; the truth is Kensington is zoned one thing, single family, and we need to expand that zoning." A representative at the rally from Chicano Federation says, "We are tired of the continuation of policies masked as zoning when in reality they are policies of segregation." Meantime, Borre Winkle, CEO and president of the Building Industry Association of San Diego told 10News, "The American dream is not to live in an apartment, the American dream is still to live in a single-family dwelling unit no matter how big it is".Winkle says getting rid of single family zoning isn't the solution. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Law enforcement agencies across San Diego Country will have extra officers stationed near busy railroad intersections this week as part of "Operation Clear Track. "The week-long enforcement ties into National Rail Safety Week, from Sept. 22-28.In Carlsbad, officers will be near Carlsbad Village Drive and Grand Avenue during the lunch hour, reminding people to only cross when there are no trains nearby."The goal is to raise railroad safety awareness through education and the enforcement of state railroad grade crossing and trespassing laws," the Carlsbad Police Department said in a statement.Amtrak officers will also keep an eye on well-known trouble spots along the coast, like a stretch in Del Mar where surfers and hikers frequently cross over tracks to get to the beach."It's not safe to cross here," said surfer Cooper Baker, who admitted he does it regularly. "But, if people have their wits about them and make good choices about where they're stepping, it's totally safe. So I just try to make sure I know a train is not going to be here and that my footing is sure. I think it's fine."A recent study found San Diego is the 9th deadliest county for accidental train casualties in the U.S. from 2013-2017. In that time, 44 people were killed while trying to cross tracks. Los Angeles County topped the list, with 110 deaths in that time."It's definitely good to give people a reminder that trains are coming through," said surfer Shayne Jensen. "You gotta be safe."In the last year, the North County Transit District has taken steps to make trains safer. In 2018, they equipped all of their trains with Positive Train Control, a new technology that automatically slows trains down if any danger is detected.Meanwhile, there have been calls in Del Mar for more railroad crossings to be built. Residents are asking for more options, so they're not tempted to cross illegally.
