Researchers in Germany have recently published a study finding that a small percentage of people have developed an addiction to shopping. The October 2019 study released in Comprehensive Psychiatry explores the addictive response to shopping. The study found that 1 in 20 of adults developed an addiction to shopping. The researchers dubbed the addiction as "buying-shopping disorder" (BSD), which "is characterized by extreme preoccupations with and craving for buying/shopping and by irresistible and identity-seeking urges to possess consumer goods."While the study looked at shopping more broadly, the researchers believe that the ability to shop online is feeding the addiction. "As e-commerce provides an important shopping environment, traditional BSD may migrate into the online retail market," the study states. Several major US airlines were reporting malfunctions with flight planning software early Monday morning, leading to delays across the country.A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the issue involved a third-party vendor that provides weight and balance software which airlines use to determine flight plans and make fuel calculations, among other purposes.The spokesman, Greg Martin, said the outage was "short-lived" and delays should be "minimal."The issue is not believed to have put any passengers in danger.Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines said the issues caused passengers to experience delays Monday.Southwest said in a statement that they "issued a ground stop" as a result of technical issues "involving a vendor that provides aircraft weight and balance data."
