BERLIN, June 17 (Xinhua) -- German authority said on Friday first case of human spreading deadly E. coli is detected, as death toll increases to 39 worldwide.A woman working in a kitchen of a catering company was infected by E. coli from sprouts, though she didn't fall ill immediately, said Harald Kehlborn, a spokesman for the consumer protection ministry of German state Hesse.Then she spread E. coli unconsciously to another 20 people through the food she prepared, said Kehlborn.The woman later developed serious complication of hemolytic- uremic syndrome (HUS), which causes failure of kidney and nervous system.According to the data of the Robert Koch Institute, Germany's national disease control centre, the number of people who are infected has reached 3,408 in Germany and 798 people have fallen into HUS, while the infection speed is slowing down.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft Corp. on Thursday posted strong quarterly earnings in its fourth fiscal quarter, with profit and revenue beating expectations from Wall Street analysts.For the quarter ended June 30, the world's largest software maker reported a net income of 5.87 billion U.S. dollars, or 69 cents per share, representing increases of 30 percent and 35 percent respectively when compared with the year-ago period.Revenue for the quarter was 17.37 billion dollars, up by 8 percent from the same period a year earlier.Wall Street analysts had expected a profit of 58 cents per share on a revenue of 17.23 billion dollars, according to Thomson Reuters.For the whole fiscal year, Microsoft reported a record revenue of 69.94 billion dollars, a 12 percent increase from the prior fiscal year. Net income for the year was 23.15 billion dollars, accounting for an increase of 23 percent.Among its business sectors, Microsoft Business Division revenue grew 7 percent for the fourth quarter and 16 percent for the full year. Over 100 million licenses of office 2010 have been sold so far, said the company.Primarily driven by growth in search revenue, the company's on- line services division revenue grew 17 percent for the fourth quarter and 15 percent for the full year. U.S. search share of Microsoft's search engine Bing increased 340 basis points year- over-year.Microsoft said revenue of entertainment and devices division grew by 30 percent for the quarter and 45 percent for the year.However, Windows and Windows Live revenue declined by 1 percent for the fourth quarter and decreased by 2 percent for the full year. SUVA, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) stressed on Wednesday that sustainable use and management of forests and tree resources will remain its important focus for the foreseeable future.Sairusi Bulai, a forestry team coordinator of SPC's Land Resources Division (LRD) told a regional workshop currently underway in Fiji's western tourist city of Nadi that "our main issue was and continues to be the lack of adequate resources to enable countries to effectively implement sustainable forest management.""Therefore, we are very fortunate that we have this opportunity to discuss findings and recommendations of the mission, which the UN-REDD Program has undertaken in the Pacific earlier this year," he added.REDD+ is a new international mechanism to compensate developing countries for reducing their rate of deforestation and forest degradation and increasing their carbon stocks.Developing countries participate on a voluntary basis. They provide technical and financial assistance to enable eligible countries to meet the requirements for future participation. RIO DE JANEIRO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Brazilians are eating a lot of rice and beans as well as high-calorie junk food lacking nutrition, a study released Thursday by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) found.According to the study, over 90 percent of Brazilians eat daily helpings of fruits and vegetables lower than the levels recommended by the Health Ministry (400 grams). Also,the consumption of sugary drinks (juices, fruit drinks and soft drinks) is twice as high as recommended by the ministry.Rice and beans, along with coffee and juices, are the most popular in Brazilians' diet. Teenagers are the main consumers of those drinks, drinking twice as much as adults. Men eat less greens and fruits than women, but drink five times more alcohol.In urban areas, the consumption of beer, soft drinks, sandwiches, and salty bread is higher. Brazilians in rural areas have a healthier diet, richer in rice, beans, fish, cassava flour, and sweet potatoes.Along with a lack of physical activity, the Brazilians' poor diet was cited as one of the main causes of obesity in the country. According to a Health Ministry study published in April, 48 percent of Brazilians are overweight, and 15 percent are obese.
