LAWRENCE, Kan. - University of Kansas head football coach Les Miles has been diagnosed with COVID-19, the Jayhawks athletic department announced Thursday.Miles said he learned he had tested positive earlier in the day and was “beginning the isolation process at my home.”KU, which is 0-3 in 2020, has a bye this weekend and isn't scheduled to play again until Oct. 6 at West Virginia, and Miles “will continue to fulfill my head coach responsibilities remotely.”He will not, however, be present at Jayhawks practices unless and until he has recovered.“Although I will not physically be able to attend a practice, for the time being, I will be using the technology available for remote working to stay connected during staff meetings, meetings with players, etc.,” Miles said in a statement.Kansas Director of Athletics Jeff Long said Miles’ case was caught through the program’s surveillance testing protocols.“At this time, we believe he will be able to continue to perform his head coaching duties,” Long said in a statement. “Based on the other test results, no other coaches tested positive. As long as Coach Miles does not develop symptoms or have a fever, we anticipate he will be able to coach the West Virginia game on Oct. 17.”Contact tracing is underway and surveillance testing will continue.“Thank you for your prayers and support in advance,” Miles said. “I look forward to beating this virus and returning back to be with my team in person very soon. Rock Chalk!”Miles, who led LSU to a national championship in 2007 and to a runner-up finish in 2011, is in his second season with Kansas. The Jayhawks are 3-12 overall and 1-10 in the Big 12 under Miles.“We wish Coach a speedy recovery and look forward to getting him back on the field very soon,” Long said. This story was first reported by Tod Palmer at KSHB in Kansas City, Missouri. 1857

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Archaeologists in northern Peru say they have found evidence of what could be the world's largest single case of child sacrifice. The pre-Columbian burial site, known as Las Llamas, contains the skeletons of 140 children who were between the ages of five and 14 when they were ritually sacrificed during a ceremony about 550 years ago, experts who led the excavation told The Associated Press on Friday. The site, located near the modern day city of Trujillo, also contained the remains of 200 young llamas apparently sacrificed on the same day.The burial site was apparently built by the ancient Chimu empire. It is thought the children were sacrificed as floods caused by the El Nino weather pattern ravaged the Peruvian coastline."They were possibly offering the gods the most important thing they had as a society, and the most important thing is children because they represent the future," said Gabriel Prieto, an archaeology professor at Peru's National University of Trujillo, who has led the excavation, along with John Verano of Tulane University."Llamas were also very important because these people had no other beasts of burden, they were a fundamental part of the economy," Prieto said, adding that the children were buried facing the sea, while the llamas faced the Andes Mountains to the east.Excavation work at the burial site started in 2011, but news of the findings was first published on Thursday by National Geographic, which helped finance the investigation.Prieto said that besides the bones, researchers also found footprints that have survived rain and erosion. The small footprints indicate the children were marched to their deaths from Chan Chan, an ancient city a mile away from Las Llamas, he said.Verano said the children's skeletons contained lesions on their breastbones, which were probably made by a ceremonial knife. Dislocated ribcages suggest that whoever was performing the sacrifices may have been trying to extract the children's hearts.Jeffrey Quilter, the director of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology at Harvard University, described it as a "remarkable discovery."In an email, Quilter told the AP the site provides "concrete evidence" that large scale sacrifices of children occurred in ancient Peru."Reports of very large sacrifices are known from other parts of the world, but it is difficult to know if the numbers are exaggerated or not," Quilter wrote.Quilter is heading a team of scientists who will analyze DNA samples from the children's remains to see if they were related and figure out which areas of the Chimu empire the sacrificed youth came from.Several ancient cultures in the Americas practiced human sacrifices including the Mayans, the Aztecs and the Incas, who conquered the Chimu empire in the late 15th century. But the mass sacrifice of children is something that has rarely been documented. The Las Llamas site is located in a shantytown, and has been fenced off to stop illegal developers from building homes on it.Prieto says the site shows how in Peru history can be just around the corner."This site surrounded by houses in a working class neighborhood can tell us a lot about a macabre event that is perhaps one of the darkest moments in our history," Prieto said. "But this is also part of our cultural heritage." 3327
LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — La Mesa Police Department released body camera footage on Wednesday showing the events that led up to an arrest video that surfaced last week.About 30 seconds of the video provide by police starts without any sound. LMPD Chief Walt Vasquez said the beginning of the video is muted because of the way the body camera is activated. (See the video above and below.)Raw footage of bodycam footage would be released for four officers involved in the arrest of Amaurie Johnson on May 27, according to La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis.Last week, video surfaced showing an argument between Johnson and an officer escalate at the Grossmont Trolley Station. Eventually, Johnson is handcuffed and told he is being charged with assaulting an officer.Vasquez added that the officer involved in the video has been an officer for about three years. (Press conference below.)“For that situation to escalate the way it did, and for the cop, you know, to stand firm in his beliefs that I should be detained or taken in with no prior evidence or reasoning, I think that should be seen by the people,” Johnson told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin. He said he was waiting for his friend at the trolley stop, near a building where that friend lives. He added that the officer started questioning him and that he gave the officer the information that he wanted.Johnson adds that he didn't resist or assault anyone."I feel as though people that look like me, um, feel the same way I do and we're tired of it. We're tired of having to deal with stuff like that,” Johnson said. The video prompted the city to begin a special investigation into the incident and LMPD to place the officer involved on administrative leave pending the investigation. 2072
