Councilmember Georgette Gomez is calling for the San Diego City Council to officially oppose construction of President Trump's "Border Wall." But, she says her opposition has nothing to do with her feelings about the President, or about the need for immigration reform.Gomez told 10News she thinks a wall would hurt San Diego's economy and environment."As leaders of the 8th largest city in the nation, to be silent on the wall is a disgrace," she says.Gomez will host a protest and rally in front of City Hall Tuesday, to bring community advocates together. It starts at 1 pm in the Civic Center Plaza.After that, she will ask the full City Council to vote on a resolution opposing the wall."It's important for the city of San Diego to stand up and protect our back yard," she says. "We need to tell Washington DC that this is not what we want or believe."Gomez says money spent on the wall would be better served to improve infrastructure to make crossing easier, improving the flow of traffic and helping San Diego become an even bigger hub for international commerce. That, she says, could add billions to the local economy."We already see it with the Cross Border Express," she says, referring to the pedestrian bridge built to the Tijuana airport. It lets travelers get across the border without having to go through the San Ysidro Point of Entry.In addition, she says the construction to widen and stream-line the Port of Entry is a good start, but more needs to be done."We should be investing in our infrastructure, but creating a wall does the opposite of what we're trying to achieve," says Gomez.In addition, she thinks construction on the wall could hurt the environment around the Tijuana River."Right now, if you want to go to the border, you can't drive down there. You have to park your car and walk," she says. "But if they build a wall, you need heavy equipment. So that's going to be brought in by vehicles and heavy machinery. They'll have to drive through sensitive habitat."Gomez says recent construction on the fence that currently exists was given a waiver so it didn't need an envioronmental impact review. She fears the same things could happen again."Regardless of how I feel about the wall, every project should have an EIR done so we know what to expect and what we can prevent," she says.Gomez says members of the Sierra Club, the Human Resources Commission and the American Friends Service Committee will be at her rally Tuesday. 2469

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Michigan — Clinton Township Police confirm they are investigating after a hidden camera was discovered inside the women's changing area and bathroom at the Switch CrossFit on Morelli Drive.The hidden camera was found April 12. Police have identified a suspect and are in the process of securing a warrant for arrest Thursday.It is not known how many victims there are, and police say it is believed the suspect is an employee. Colorado voters rejected a ballot measure that, if passed, would have banned abortions in the state after the 22nd week of a woman’s pregnancy unless her life is at risk and potentially punished doctors who performed them.ABC News called the race around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, with 60% of Coloradans voting against Proposition 115’s passage, compared to 40% who voted in favor of the measure, with 79% of precincts reporting.Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains Action Fund President and CEO Vicki Cowart released a statement Tuesday evening praising Coloradans’ decision."Today, we can proudly confirm that Colorado remains a safe haven for access to the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion care. Once again, Colorado voters confirmed what we have always known: that health care decisions belong between a patient and their health care provider, without political interference,” Cowart said.The rejection of Proposition 115 means abortions will continue to be legal at any time during a woman’s pregnancy in Colorado, with a restriction which specifies that the parents or guardians of a minor seeking an abortion must receive written notification about the procedure at least 48 hours in advance.If Proposition 115 had passed, a doctor who broke the rule and performed an abortion outside of 22 weeks would have been guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor, which would have been punishable by a fine.Physicians who performed abortions outside of the 22-week window would have faced disciplinary action by the state medical board and a suspension of their license of at least three years under the proposal. Women who received an abortion would not have been penalized had Proposition 115 passed.The number of abortions performed in the state after 22 weeks is hard to come by. The Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment (CDPHE) believes the number is between 20 to 300 per year. COLUMBIA COUNTY, Wisconsin -- Twenty people were hurt when a semi-truck hit a school bus carrying students from a Milwaukee private school Wednesday morning, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.Four of the injuries are serious, the DOT says. The severity of the other injuries is not yet known.The students were from Hope Semper Christian School.The crash happened just after 10:00 a.m. on I-39 northbound, near DeForest, Wisconsin. The DOT says the semi crashed into the school bus, which was parked on the shoulder of the interstate after pulling over due to a mechanical issue.Students who were not injured are being transported to the State Patrol Post in DeForest for reunification with family members.The students were participating in an end-of-year field trip, according to a statement the school posted on Facebook. "While very scary, our staff and students were blessed by urgent first-responders, local medical attention as well as the kindness and generosity of Deforest Public Schools. COVINGTON, Ky. -- At least three Northern Kentucky school districts will be closed Monday after state lawmakers rushed through a pension overhaul plan.Covington Independent, Boone County and Kenton County schools confirmed they'll be closed April 2.Covington spokesperson Deb Vance said 180 of 271 teachers called to say they're taking a personal day on Monday. The day will have to be made up later, she said. In Boone County, Superintendent Randy Poe said a day off will let teachers and families travel to Frankfort."Drastic times call for drastic action," Poe said in a letter to parents. "Although closing school is the last thing anyone wants to do, one of the reasons for this decision to close school is because educators feel one of their main responsibilities is to advocate for the children of the Commonwealth."The bill passed Thursday night preserves benefits for current retirees. Most benefits for current workers would also be preserved, but sick days would be capped after this year and will not be applied toward retirement.
