The College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl is moving to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff, made the announcement in a statement Saturday night on the eve of the release of the final playoff rankings. The College Football Playoff and Rose Bowl "mutually agreed" to move the game because of the growing number of coronavirus cases in Southern California."We are pleased that parents and loved ones will now be able to see their students play in the game," Hancock said. The move came after several coaches expressed their dismay about possibly traveling to the Rose Bowl to play in a game where players' families wouldn't be allowed.Los Angeles County is under a stay-at-home order that took effect earlier this month. Pasadena, home to the Rose Bowl, has its own public health department but has mostly followed the county's practices during the pandemic.A source told The Associated Press that the Rose Bowl sought an exemption from the state of California to allow families to attend but was denied twice.Hancock said the game will still be played in the mid-afternoon on New Year's Day."We are very grateful to Rose Bowl officials and the city of Pasadena," Hancock said. "They have worked hard to listen to the concerns of the CFP, the teams that might have played there, and their state and government officials. The Tournament of Roses has acted in the best interest of the people who live in Southern California, and we're grateful to Cotton Bowl and AT&T Stadium officials for their ability to make this late switch possible." 1624

The COVID-19 pandemic is raising more questions about what jobs prison inmates should do and how much the inmates should be paid.Prison labor isn't unusual, but relying on it amid the spread of the virus has sparked concern among activists. In particular, activists are concerned that inmates have been recruited to help move bodies into mobile morgues in El Paso County, Texas. Refrigerated trucks were set up after a spike in deaths led to overcrowding in local morgues."We think it's OK to put (inmates) in these risky situations, while at the same time denying them access to testing and medical care and free phone calls with their families," said Krish Gundu, the co-founder and executive director of the Texas Jail Project. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says the work is completely voluntary and that inmates are being paid an hour for the work.In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has used state prison labor to produce hand sanitizer. Those prisoners were paid well below an hour for thier work."Is this what you would pay an essential worker who would be doing the job if you didn't have an inmate to do the job, right?" Gundu said. "I mean, why the difference?"According to the prison policy initiative, the average pay for inmates across the country ranges from The Confederate-themed Mississippi flag is drawing criticism from two big forces in the culturally conservative state. Walmart says it will no longer display the state flag because it includes the Confederate battle emblem. Displaying state flags inside stores is a common practice. “We know the design of the Mississippi state flag is being discussed by various stakeholders. While the issue continues to be discussed, we’ve made the decision to remove the Mississippi state flag from display in its current form from our stores," Walmart spokesperson Anne Hatfield said in an email statement.“We believe it’s the right thing to do, and is consistent with Walmart’s position to not sell merchandise with the confederate flag from stores and online sites, as part of our commitment to provide a welcoming and inclusive experience for all of our customers in the communities we serve," Hatfield continued. The Mississippi Baptist Convention is calling on lawmakers to remove the Confederate symbol from the flag because many people are “hurt and shamed” by it. The governing body for college athletics and other influential groups are calling for Mississippi to change its flag. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves says if the flag is going to be redesigned, it should be done in a statewide election. 1300.14 an hour to .41 an hour, depending on the nature of the job.El Paso County has requested that Texas National Guard mobilize to assist with the growing COVID-19 crisis. If and when that happens, the sheriff says he will stop recruiting inmates to help move bodies. 1556
