WASHINGTON, D.C. – Video games are not just for the young anymore – they’re for the young at heart. People over the age of 50 are one of the fastest growing group of video game players in the country and that is translating into big bucks. It’s a trend that can be seen at the Hayes Senior Wellness Center in Washington, D.C. That is where afternoons are a time to get up and strike in video game bowling. “It’s fun,” said 62-year-old Karen Glymph. “It brings you up, makes you laugh.” Glymph plays to win, even though video games are not what this generation grew up with. “We didn’t have this then,” she said. “Most everybody wanted to go outside. Now, they want to stay and play video games.” That is especially true for seniors, according to a new study by the AARP. “Gaming and technology – that's where we see a bigger shift,” said Alison Bryant, AARP senior vice president of research. How big is the shift? In 2016, about 40 million people over the age of 50 played video games monthly. By 2019, that number soared to more than 50 million. That means 44% of all seniors are now regularly playing video games. All of this is turning into big business, because the amount of money seniors spent on video games last year alone totaled billion. “I hope that the gaming industry is going to start taking a look at these numbers and saying, ‘wait a minute. There's really an opportunity here to increase our market share’ and to develop games that might be even more exciting for older adults,” Bryant said. A Beach City, Ohio, woman was arrested for allegedly running an officer off the road while police were chasing her boyfriend.Angela Moseley, 43, is facing several charges, including felonious assault, complicity to failure to comply and obstruction of justice. She was picked up Thursday afternoon in Akron by the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.Police released body and dash camera video of the incident, which took place Sunday afternoon.According to Sgt. Nicholas Antonides, the video shows a gray Cadillac, driven by Moseley, swerve towards to the left just as Massillon Officer Anthony Crabtree starts to pass her Beach City. The officer briefly went off the road, but was able to maintain control."It was a brief thing. However, it was a big deal. It could have turned into something catastrophic," Antonides said. "It could have cost an officer's life. It could have cost her life."Officer don't believe the maneuver was an accident. At the time, officers were chasing Wayne Penick, 44, of Beach City. A Lebanon, Indiana, mother is upset after she says her kids were denied breakfast and "lunch shamed" because they didn't have enough money on their account.Shaina Lawson says her 2nd and 5th grade daughters came home crying on Thursday from Harney Elementary School after she says the cafeteria worker denied them breakfast."You should never take food away from an innocent child," Lawson said. "It's awful."Lawson didn't put more money on their accounts in time and says their food was taken away from them in front of everyone. "The lady took their food from them in front of everyone in the lunch room and told them because they didn't have money on there that they were not allowed to eat," Lawson said. "There were kids snickering in the back of the line, made them feel very uncomfortable. I can only imagine how they were feeling."While students are not allowed to buy anything when there's no money on their account, Lebanon Community Schools says students have an alternate menu option available to them. When a student's balance is low, the schools notifies the parents twice a week. Schools send home a letter explaining the process of applying for free or reduced price meals when a student's balance goes in the negatives. "But before we could put money on there, they decided it was ok to snatch away my kids breakfast both of them in front of everyone," Lawson said. Some schools in Central Indiana, like the Greenfield Central Community School Corporation, have changed their policies to prevent what's called "lunch shaming."Lebanon Community Schools says they are reviewing their policies and procedures to ensure students and families are being served and welcome the opportunity to assist families with questions regarding food services and payment. 1782
