PINE VALLEY, Calif. — A suspected human smuggler was sentenced to 30 months in prison for barreling through a Border Patrol checkpoint, narrowly missing vehicles and severely injuring a border agent.Jorge Garcia-Osornio, 28, of Michoacán, Mexico, was charged with transporting certain aliens and aiding and abetting from the Nov. 14, 2017 incident.Border officials said Garcia was illegally in the U.S. when he approached a Pine Valley border checkpoint with two illegal immigrants hidden in the floor of his vehicle. As he neared the line of cars waiting, Garcia made an illegal U-turn and began driving in the opposite direction on the freeway, officials said.Agents began to pursue Garcia before he made another U-turn and headed back toward the checkpoint at speeds reaching 100 miles per hour.As he reached the checkpoint, officials said Garcia narrowly missed two vehicles and a border agent, and blasted through a metal sign, sending debris in all directions.“In committing his criminal act, Garcia not only placed the lives of those he smuggled in grave danger, but seriously injured a Border Patrol agent in the process,” Chief Patrol Agent Rodney S. Scott.That debris severely injured a nearby agent, who likened the blow to being "hit with a baseball bat." The agent was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and has yet to return to duty.Garcia continued on for another three and a half miles at high speeds before exited a freeway and crashing into a hillside. One of the undocumented immigrants hiding in the vehicle told agents he "feared for his life."Garcia was arrested nearby after ditching his crashed vehicle. As part of his plea deal, he admitted to charges of driving the wrong way, using a dangerous weapon, and seriously injuring a border agent, among other charges.The man was expecting to earn between ,400 to ,000 for transporting each undocumented immigrant.“This defendant had no regard for the safety of his passengers, other drivers on the freeway or agents at the checkpoint,” U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman said in a release. “It’s a miracle no one died in this incident. The company could face a range of criminal charges if any of the wildfires broke out as a result of improperly maintained power lines. PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida — A heroic act caught on video.A baby nearly choked to death at a Florida mall but quick-thinking officers who just happened to be nearby stepped up to save her life. The incident unfolded nearly two weeks ago. One-year old Lucia Graham was rescued by two Palm Beach Gardens, Florida officers who happened to be eating lunch nearby when she started choking."They were there for a reason and that reason was to save her life," said Ana Jaramillo de Graham, Lucia's mother.In the surveillance video, Jaramillo de Graham can be seen with her two kids, including Lucia's toddler brother, enjoying Kid's Day at Palm Beach Gardens Mall."We got hungry, and like we always do, we went to Chick-fil-A," she said.Lucia then started choking on a chicken nugget."She looked at me with her eyes wide open. She tried to do something with her mouth — she couldn't cough, couldn't do anything," said Jaramillo de Graham.The mother tried a technique taught to her by her pediatrician, which involved sharp blows to the baby's back to dislodge the object. She said in a panic she must not have been performing the technique hard enough, so she started screaming for help.Officer Robert Ayala and Officer Rafael Guadelupe rushed over right away."Officer Ayala stepped in, I handed her to him. He sat down and so quickly started performing what he needed to do to make sure she was OK. And I sat on the floor panicked. I just wanted to make sure she was OK," she said.Finally, the chicken was removed and Lucia was able to breathe again."They're our heroes. They are the best, best angels we could've had that day at the mall," Jaramillo de Graham said.Lucia was immediately checked by EMT staff at the mall. Despite the close call, baby Lucia is 100 percent healthy."They knew exactly what to do to save her life," Lucia's mother said. "So, thank you so much officers because if it wasn't for you guys, we probably, definitely wouldn't be here with our Lucia."Jaramillo de Graham recommends all parents take classes so they can properly administer CPR or life saving techniques to children if they are choking.On Thursday night, those officers were honored by city council and Lucia's parents. 2260

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A Central Florida man is on a mission to do something nobody else has ever done: become the first person with Down Syndrome to complete a full Ironman.Chris Nikic has become an inspiration to people around the world and it started with a simple mission.Nik Nikic encouraged his son to push himself 1% more each day.“We came up with this concept of just get a little better today than yesterday,” Nik explained.Now, 21-year-old Chris is about to do something incredible. On November 7, he’ll swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run a full 26.2 mile marathon in Panama City Beach.“I want to inspire others so that they can be like me and so that one day they can do it too,” Chris said with a smile.If he completes the race within 17 hours, Chris will be the first person with Down Syndrome to ever finish an Ironman.He also has a message for the other competitors: “You better watch out, because I’m going to beat you!”“Really, you’re going to beat all of them?” his dad asked.“Yeah!” Chris answered enthusiastically.Chris has spent several months swimming off the coast of Pinellas County as he trains with coach Dan Grieb for the big race and gets used to the choppy Gulf of Mexico waters.“I’ve learned that you can teach anybody anything if you’re willing to love them through their disability or love them through their struggle,” Grieb added.Chris has been documenting his journey on social media. He also has an impeccable sense of humor.
