PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) - The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway reopened to visitors Monday after storm damage that closed the popular attraction for almost two months. The Valentine’s Day storm severed the power feed to the mountain and washed out a road, according to tram officials. Crews spent weeks making necessary repairs and cleaning up damage. The closure kept 100,000 visitors away, tram officials estimate. The storm led to almost million in repair costs and lost revenues. “It’s been a long six weeks for everyone, but today we are delighted to finally welcome back Tram visitors. On behalf of the entire Tramway staff, we are thrilled to be back open for business and truly appreciate the community’s support throughout our closure,” said Tramway General Manager Nancy Nichols. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which is the world’s largest rotating tram car, opened in 1963. Its 80-passenger cars take travelers from the desert floor to the Mountain Station at an elevation of 8,516 feet in 10 minutes. Visitors can enjoy two restaurants, a natural history museum, documentary theaters, and hiking trails at the top. The tram opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. (WTMJ) -- A Wisconsin woman has been charged with second degree recklessly endangering safety after she allegedly had her 9-year-old son ride on top of her minivan to hold down a plastic pool.According to the criminal complaint, it happened around 3 p.m. local time on Sept. 9, when officers responded to reports of a child riding on top of a minivan.A 911 caller followed Amber Schmunk, 28, of Fredonia, until she pulled over and took her child and the pool off the vehicle's roof. Schmunk then continued driving down the road and stopped at her sister’s house where police caught up with her.Schmunk told police picked up the pool at a residence but did not have enough room inside the minivan. She said she “decided to put the pool on top of the minivan, but had no way to strap it down, so she had her child climb on the roof and hold it down while she drove.”Schmunk admitted to police she had her oldest son ride on top of the minivan, “but only for a short time, maybe 20-30 seconds.” Schmunk later stated it was safe because she used a strap to tie the child down on top of the pool.She also told the officer that she believed it was “ok” as her father let her do things like that when she was that age.Schmunk will be back in court on Nov. 14. If convicted, she faces up to ten years in prison and up to a ,000 fine. 1417

PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - Snow came down steadily and heavy at times in the Pine Valley area of East San Diego County Thursday. At Sunrise Hwy and Old Highway 80, the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans established a checkpoint requiring snow chains to proceed toward higher elevations of Mt. Laguna. The drive eastbound on Interstate 8 from San Diego was largely heavy rain and wind until Highway 79, when the rain turned to snow at about 3,700 feet. (KGTV) — An unusual fossil deposit was discovered during construction at the State Route 11/Otay Mesa East Port of Entry Project, yielding remains that may be up to 28 million years old.The state Department of Transportation says skeletal remains of extinct mammals — including camels, oreodonts, rodents, and possibly a large carnivore — were discovered at the site of the SR-11 and Otay Mesa East Port of Entry project.The fossils are estimated to be somewhere between 16 to 28 million years old, or Earth's Tertiary Period, and could provide more insight into our area's history.Paleo Monitors from the San Diego Natural History Museum found the remains in what appears to be a new geologic formation that has yet to be mapped in the region. The area also contains plant fossils and volcanic bombs (or pieces of rock ejected by a volcano), the DOT says.The Nat will curate and catalog the fossils into its paleontology program.The construction project, which will create a new port of entry into the country, will continue as planned, the state said. 1080
