UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday voiced its hope that the upcoming summit of the Group of 20 largest economies (G20) will help achieve positive efforts that include the efforts to strengthen the institution building, enhance market confidence around the world and accelerate the recovery of the world economy.The statement came as Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, was speaking at the informal meeting of the UN General Assembly on the upcoming G20 summit in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea (ROK)."China hopes that the Seoul summit will, in the spirit of mutual benefit and win-win outcome on the basis of implementation of the outcomes of previous G20 summit, achieve the following positive results: First, strengthen the institution building of the G20, enhance market confidence around the world, and accelerate the recovery of the world economy," Li said."Second, complete the IMF's share reform before the summit and fulfill the commitments made by the G20 leaders," he said. "Third, address the imbalance in development issues, so as to provide political support to the early realization of the MDGs," the eight anti-poverty targets to be reached by 2015. IMF stands for the International Monetary Fund, a Bretton Woods institute.A one more positive results that China hopes to see at the end of the coming G20 summit is to "facilitate the achievement of a comprehensive and balanced outcome at the Doha Round and the fulfillment of the Development Round objectives," he said."China stands ready to work with all parties concerned to ensure that the G20 summit continue to develop in line with the common interests of the international community," he said.Meanwhile, the senior Chinese diplomat also voiced his support to the UN involvement in the G20 summit."China supports the initiative of the G20 to invite, as it did in the past, representatives of the United Nations to participate in the summit and its preparations," he said."China welcomes the effort of the (UN) secretary-general to gather the views and proposals of the member states and bring these inputs to the summit in Seoul," Li said."The G20 summit has played a significant and positive role in coordinating global response to the international financial crisis and in promoting the recovery of the world economy. YUSHU, Qinghai, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- It has been six years since Zhaduo was moved away from his home on the ecologically vulnerable grassland on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, but the 33-year-old said he still misses his yaks and the life of a herdsman."The money for selling 40 yaks and 25 sheep has been used," Zhaduo said. "It is so expensive to now live near the town center. Everything costs big money."Zhaduo is one of the emigrants from Rima village in Yushu County of northwest China’s Qinghai Province, near the source of China' s three major rivers - the Yangtze, the Yellow River, and the Lancang River - which form the world' s highest plateau wetland, known as Asia' s water tower.China started moving people out of the 150,000-sq-kilometer Sanjiangyuan region more than five years ago in a bid to repair the ecological system damaged by excessive herding and to transform the area into an unpopulated nature reserve.So far, some 50,000 herdsmen, mostly Tibetans, have bid farewell to the nomadic life and were moved closer to the town centers near their old homes, where they have better access to health and educational resources.Zhaduo now lives in Jiajiniang village, twelve minutes' drive from Gyegu township of Yushu. The family is surviving by picking mountain-grown caterpillar fungus.Zhaduo basically has no jobs in the months other than the harvest season from May to June, and he has no sense of security since he is relying on a business which can be bankrupt by inadequate rainfalls or abnormal climate changes."There is no way to return - the grassland is sealed off by the government and, anyway, I don' t have money to buy yaks and sheep," Zhaduo said.China' s policy makers have been urged to double their efforts to help the Sanjiangyuan emigrants adapt to the new life so the herdsmen who have no job skills do not have to be sacrificed by the massive ecological repair project.The government has earmarked 7.5 billion yuan (900 million US dollars) for the project.Li Xiaonan, deputy director of the Sanjiangyuan Ecological Preservation and Construction Office, said since efforts began to repair the wetland, it is now able to hold more water and the quality of the water has improved.The rising population, as well as overgrazing, have been blamed for the deteriorating ecosystem.Official statistics show that only 130,000 people lived in the prefectures of Guoluo and Yushu of the Sanjiangyuan region in 1949. However, the population grew five times over the past six decades.Li said the resettlement of 50,000 herdsmen is the key to improving the ecosystem, but the government will now have to find ways to provide more forms of aid, other than handing out quotas of free grain and cash subsidies to the resettled herdsmen.Additionally, the provincial government offers vocational training and has set aside funds to encourage small private businesses.Gongsangranjia is one of a few beneficiaries. He runs a Tibetan drug store near the town in the heart of Nangqian County, Yushu prefecture. Gongsangranjia and his family of ten moved out of the grassland 110 kilometers away from town some seven years ago.Since then, he sold two hundred yaks and sheep to build a spacious house and set up a drug store."The store income averages 300 to 400 yuan a day. The business is not bad," said Caiding, Gongsangranjia' s wife.Wang Hengsheng, a researcher with the Qinghai Academy of Social Sciences, said the resettlement program is not just "moving people out" but also helping them live a better life in a different environment."If they can not survive by themselves in the new environment, the Sanjiangyuan region won’t be able to achieve a long-term coordinated development of the ecosystem and the economy," Wang said.Ping Zhiqiang, an official with the provincial Development and Reform Commission of Qinghai, said the government should help resettled herdsman master a marketable trade and assist the region in developing a profitable sector. Only then can the improvement of the ecosystem be secured.

TIANJIN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations' chief climate change negotiator applauded China on Monday for its efforts in dealing with the challenge of climate change, saying she was impressed by the determination of the Chinese people and their government.Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC), made the remarks in China's northern city of Tianjin at a welcoming reception held by the Chinese government.A new round of UN climate talks is being held in the port city on Oct. 4-9 in preparation for the year-end Cancun summit in Mexico."Here in Tianjin, I have seen much evidence of determination," said Figueres."(I saw the) determination of the government of China to reduce their CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by up to 45 percent by 2020, (and the) determination of the people of China to turn China into the world's leader in renewable energy technology and to find a visionary balance among economic development, poverty eradication and climate protection."Figueres also praised the host city, saying, "(I saw the) determination of the government of Tianjin, China's fourth-largest city, to be a model city for the circular economy, a pilot city for low-carbon growth and an exemplary city for sustainable development.""A striking example is the Tianjin Eco-City project between Singapore and China and with significant private sector investment, which will provide eco-friendly housing for some 350,000 people," she added.More than 3,000 delegates from 177 parties and observer states and over 200 non-governmental organizations are attending the Tianjin gathering, the final one prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Cancun at the end of this year.Figueres concluded her speech at the reception with a Chinese proverb, "Zhong Zhi Cheng Cheng," which means "With everyone's determination, we can do anything."
