The FBI's top liaison on Capitol Hill is out.Greg Brower, an FBI assistant director and head of the Office of Congressional Affairs, stepped down last Friday after a year on the job. In the role, Brower was on the receiving end of a pack of congressional probes into the law enforcement agency's conduct. The decision, a "tough" one he made of his own accord, Brower said, follows other high-level departures from the bureau as FBI Director Christopher Wray assembles his own team of close advisers."It was tough but I had an offer I couldn't refuse from a great law firm," Brower said in an interview Thursday. "It was very gratifying to be a part of that team. I could not be more proud of how people work and how committed they are to the mission."Brower was appointed to the position by then-FBI director James Comey in March of 2017 after serving as the bureau's deputy general counsel. He will join the lobbying and law firm Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck as a shareholder in the litigation department. The work in the legislative affairs office has heated up during Brower's tenure, as the fallout from Comey's firing by President Donald Trump has fanned a growing mistrust of the FBI among some lawmakers and spurred a round of congressional investigations. Not long before Brower's departure, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee slapped the Justice Department with a subpoena for documents related to a trio of recent controversial decisions made by the FBI, including the move in 2016 to not charge Hillary Clinton after the probe of her email server and the internal recommendation by an FBI office to fire former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. In response, Wray said last week that the pace of document production for congressional inquiries at the bureau was "too slow" and doubled the number of FBI staff responsible for reviewing the records. On Thursday, Brower said he had worked with the FBI's Office of the General Counsel, which reviews the internal documents for release, before his departure to get a "a better plan in place" to respond to "an unprecedented wave of oversight requests.""That's all really on track," Brower said, adding that his decision to leave had nothing to do with the probes. "As the director mentioned, it's probably taking longer than it should, but the volume is just so unprecedented that we finally had to put more people on it."Brower's year atop the office saw big wins for the bureau on Capitol Hill, including a six-year extension of the controversial foreign surveillance program known as FISA Section 702 in January and the recent passage of the CLOUD Act, which makes it easier for the US to collect data stored overseas."I felt like the biggest things I set off to do in '17 were done and I felt less bad about leaving," he said.Brower is the fifth top adviser to the director to leave his position since Trump tapped Wray to replace Comey in June. 2943

The COVID-19 pandemic changed all industries, including those for celebrities. Forbes says the world’s highest-paid celebrities brought in a combined 0 million less in 2020 compared to 2019.But don’t feel too bad for them, the top 10 list earned a combined .1 billion this year before taxes and fees. The top earner in 2020, according to Forbes, was Kylie Jenner, who brought in 0 million, mostly from selling a majority stake in her cosmetics firm.Number two stays in the family; Kanye West, Jenner’s brother-in-law, brought in 0 million this year, helped by his Yeezy sneakers deal with adidas.Pandemic-impacted sports cancellations couldn’t dent Roger Federer, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, apparently, Forbes has the three athletes at number 3, 4 and 5 on their list, respectively. Each brought in just over 0 million in 2020, likely helped by endorsement deals and multi-year contracts.Other athletes in the top 10 include Neymar at number 7, who brought in .5 million, and LeBron James at number 9, with .2 million. In September, Forbes announced Tyler Perry was officially a billionaire, owning the rights to his 20-plus movies and continuing to produce content during the pandemic. He also makes the list of top 10 highest-paid celebrities of 2020 at number 6, reportedly bringing in million this year.Howard Stern is the highest-paid radio host, thanks to his eight-figure contract with SiriusXM, and is number 9 on the list of 2020 earners with million for the year.Rounding out the top 10 is Dwayne Johnson, who brought in .5 million this year, mostly from payments for forthcoming movies.Forbes observes the coronavirus pandemic has impacted celebrities in different ways. As live events, like concert tours and sports games, were cancelled and took away potential revenue, online and streaming opportunities like Netflix content deals provided new income. For reference, Forbes reported Taylor Swift, Kylie Jenner and Kanye West as the top three highest-paid celebrities of 2019. Swift topped the list last year with 5 million in 2019. She fell to number 25 on the highest-paid list in 2020. 2148

The drop in gun sales has lead to deep job cuts at Sturm RugerOn Wednesday, the company reported a 21% sales decline for 2017. Thursday it disclosed that it has cut 700 jobs, or more than a quarter of its staff, over the last 13 months. That leaves it with 1,750 workers."When we reduced production in 2017, we had to make some difficult decisions," said CEO Chris Killoy, on a call with analysts Thursday. Many of the jobs were eliminated through attrition. The company also had 320 temporary employees a year ago who have since left the company. In January, the company needed to further reduce staff, prompting it to lay off an additional 60 workers.Gun sales have been sharply lower across the industry since President Donald Trump was elected. Fears that Hillary Clinton would win the presidency and seek tougher gun control laws drove record sales through 2016, and encouraged retailers to stock up on inventory. With the election of Trump and Republicans in control of both houses of Congress, those fears greatly abated.Killoy said that 2017 FBI background checks, which correspond roughly to purchases, fell 11%. Retailers also cut back on purchases to reduce inventory."2017 was a challenging year for the firearm industry," Killoy. But he said as a result of the job cuts, "we're better positioned to compete in 2018."There has been more talk about gun control in the week since the shooting of 17 students and staff at a Florida high school, led by many of the students and families from that school.President Trump and some Republicans, including Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, have voiced new support for some gun control measures. But it's too soon to say whether those efforts will affect gun sales.Killoy did not mention the gun control debate during his conference call, although he did express sympathy for victims of the Florida shooting."Like all Americans, we struggle with the shock and sadness of these terrible events," he said.Sturm Ruger is not the only company to report a drop in sales. Overall the industry has reported a sales decline of more than 0 million in 2017.Gun maker Remington has warned it plans to file for bankruptcy protection soon. Killoy was asked about whether Sturm Ruger would be interested in buying Remington, given that it has a strong balance sheet. Ruger's cash on hand fell by nearly million during the year, but it still has .5 million and no debt. He wouldn't rule out a deal for Remington, but wouldn't comment on it directly."We're watching that closely," he said the coming bankruptcy case. "We wish them well going through that process. With million cash on hand, it may provide some opportunities down the road." 2727

The Chicago Police Department is under fire after a video surfaced showing department officers helping the Norfolk Southern Police in an operation that used "bait trucks," container trucks filled with goods left to attract potential thieves. The Facebook video, shot last week by community activist Charles McKenzie, shows a white unmarked truck parked in the largely black Englewood neighborhood."The police parked a truck with boxes of Nike shoes in front of kids ... and when people hop in the truck the police hopping out on them," McKenzie wrote on Facebook. The truck was part of a surveillance operation, nicknamed "Operation Trailer Trap" by police, used to target individuals who had been breaking into freight containers at Norfolk Southern rail yards, Norfolk Southern told CNN. The rail company has its own police force.A man was arrested on August 2 as part of the sting and charged with burglary. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office said the charges against the suspect were dropped on Thursday. The office did not provide additional details about why the suspect was no longer being charged. According to the Chicago Tribune, the suspect is deaf and communicates through sign language, and told police he had entered the trailer to take food.Norfolk Southern dismissed claims that youths were targeted in the operation, adding the suspect apprehended "cut open the safety seal with box cutters, broke into the back of the trailer and only then did they find retail shoes in unmarked brown boxes, previously secured and hidden inside.""Norfolk Southern has the responsibility to ensure the freight we are transporting is safely delivered and does not pose a risk to the communities in which we operate," Norfolk added in a statement. "This week's police operation was intended to directly combat such unacceptable thefts."Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson acknowledged in a news conference on Thursday the department assists local law enforcement agencies with this type of operation."At the end of the day, just because it's out there and it's not yours, that doesn't mean you're supposed to take it," Johnson said. "But as Chicago Police Department, we're going to take a hard look and see if there's something we can do better."At least one local official and the ACLU of Illinois criticized Chicago police for being involved in the operation, arguing the practice created unfair situations of entrapment.Karen Sheley, director of the Police Practices Project at ACLU of Illinois, said in a statement "these stunts won't help" better relationships between police and communities of color in Chicago."Police should focus on reform and improve outreach to communities that have been too often the target of police abuse," Sheley said.In a statement, longtime community activist Lori Lightfoot, who is also a current candidate for mayor, said the use of the "bait trucks" is "an appalling display of misplaced priorities," and made a reference to a string of shootings that left 12 people dead over the weekend."Video footage shows officers antagonizing Chicagoans they are sworn to serve and protect, and creating conflict when their responsibility is to promote public safety," Lightfoot added.Roderick T. Sawyer, alderman for Chicago's 6th Ward, said the operation "serves only to undermine already fragile efforts to build trust between law enforcement and the community."Sawyer called for the city council to hold a hearing on the matter. 3502

The Cruise Lines International Association announced Monday new regulations for cruising in the Americas. The association, which represents major global cruise lines, said cruises could start back up soon "with support and approval of regulators and destinations.""We recognize the devastating impact that this pandemic, and the subsequent suspension of cruise operations, has had on economies throughout the world, including the nearly half a million members of the wider cruise community and small businesses in the Americas who depend on this vibrant industry for their livelihoods," CLIA president, CEO Kelly Craighead said in the press release. "Based on what we are seeing in Europe, and following months of collaboration with leading public health experts, scientists, and governments, we are confident that these measures will provide a pathway for the return of limited sailings from the U.S. before the end of this year."The new rules include everyone being tested for COVID-19 before embarking and mandatory mask-wearing for everyone onboard. Also, everyone must abide by physical distancing. There will be an increase of fresh air through the ventilation system, medical capability with risk-based response plans, and shore excursions must abide by cruise operators' prescribed protocols. The CLIA announced back in August that its ocean-going cruise line members will suspend their U.S. operations until at least Oct. 31. 1439
