SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say they received a call regarding a goat on the loose in the tailgate lot near Petco Park on Sunday.SDPD said a goat was apparently running around the lot sometime before 2 p.m., before the owner of the animal had retrieved the goat and left the area before officers arrived."Officers are responding to reports of a goat running around the area of tailgate lot in downtown. The latest is the owner has the goat and is walking him back to his vehicle saying he was a BAAAAAAAD goat. The owner and his goat left the area prior to police arrival," the department tweeted.The department said a couple of hours later that officers later found the man and his goat elsewhere downtown and learned the goat's name: "Tom Brady." 764

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sick and tired over school shootings, a Point Loma High School junior is trying to make change through one of his passions.He participated in Public Service Announcement contest, a collaboration between San Diego Crime Stoppers and the San Diego Unified School District Police Department. Students were required to create a PSA about an issue schools deal with, like bullying or substance abuse.Tim Fraher's 40-second PSA addressed school shootings, raising awareness about the ways it's easier to get a gun than a driver's license. He also wants people to take notice if a friend or classmate is getting bullied or seems depressed.Fraher says he wants people to take school shootings seriously."We need to do something. We can't just sit around and pray that it will go away because it won't. We need to actually get out there and actively reform and make changes so that this won't happen," said Fraher.Fraher won the competition, and his PSA will air on television in the San Diego region this June. "It felt good to know that the message will get across, that it will be out there," said Fraher.He hopes the 40-second message will encourage others to take a chance at making a change. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several men tried to scale the border fence at Border Field State Park Thursday evening.Video shows the men sitting on top of the wall attempting to get over. Border Patrol responded and agents were able to break up the crowd on the Mexico side of the border. Following the incident, the agency said it is willing to add agents in the area as needed. According to Border Patrol officials, about 167 arrests are made per day at the San Diego sector of the border. VIDEO: Migrants climb over border fence at Border Field State ParkEarlier in the week, dozens of migrants were caught on video climbing over the same section of the border fence. During that incident, several people successfully made it over the fence and onto the beach on the U.S. side of the border before being apprehended by agents. A total of 24 people, 18 men and six women, were taken into custody. According to Border Patrol, 23 of the people who crossed the border illegally were from Honduras while the 24th person was from Guatemala. 1036

On May 13, 2019, Lewis pulled welding gloves over his hands to fuse his initials into the keel plate of the USNS John Lewis at the General Dynamics Shipyard — the lead ship in a class of oiler vessels.Consistent with his commitment to non-violence, the ships will be non-combat vessels but play a vital role in refueling other ships at sea."For the U.S. Navy and former Secretary Ray Mabus to see fit to honor me in this way is unreal and almost unimaginable," Lewis said in a statement last year. "I only try to do what is fair, what is right, and what is just and get in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- School grades have been a sensitive topic between parents and their kids for as long most can probably remember.Whether you agree with a report card or not – it's used as a sign of academic performance or to highlight areas that may need improvement.With school back in session, most from a distance, teachers across California are trying to figure out how to properly measure students' learning.Back in March, when stay at home orders were announced, some school districts shifted from the traditional A to F system to credit/no credit grading."Many of them did look to what the universities were asking and what would be in the best interest of students in that before they made a decision," said Dina Wilson, division director at the Los Angeles County Office of EducationThat was five months ago and a temporary measure.A new school year is underway, and each district's current approach to grading could have an impact on students' future and finances."We want to make sure we're doing right by our kids," said San Diego County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold. "We don't want our kids to be at a disadvantage when they start to apply for colleges."Gothold has a strong opinion on how grading should be handled this school year."Letter grades need to be the default practice," he said.The San Diego County Office of Education provides its recommendations, but they don't have to be implemented by local districts.Gothold said while the education system needs to figure out a way to hold students harmless for learning challenges, moving away from a traditional grading system could have long-term impacts."We are putting our kids at a disadvantage if they're applying for schools nationally," he said. "Not every college, not every institution is even accepting pass/fail or credit/no credit. We've seen this in some of the art schools across the country where kids have applied and have been told they aren't going to recognize those grades."There's also the issue of grant money and scholarships.Gothold said credit/no credit had an impact on some student's finances."Kids that needed a 3.0 to qualify for Cal Grant, for those that were on track to get As and Bs to boost their GPA the second semester of their senior year, some were shut out and not eligible for that funding that they so desperately needed and deserved because of pass-fail credit/no credit," he said.Reporter Adam Racusin asked a handful of the state's largest schools what type of grading system they're using this academic year. All who responded said they were using a traditional A through F system.Back in March, the University of California implemented temporary measures which relax undergraduate admissions requirements for students looking to enroll at UC for fall 2020 and future years as applicable. According to the UC system, these measures will help mitigate some of the extraordinary challenges students and their families face in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.A spokesperson for the California State University said they relaxed some undergraduate admissions standards for both newly admitted students and prospective students to account for changes in grading and administration of standardized tests. 3238
