DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV)- After the recent horse deaths at the Del Mar Racetrack, a small group of animal activists is proposing a ban on horse racing. Local supporters of the track are saying "no." Animal rights activists were set to speak at the California Horse Racing Board meeting Thursday morning when things got heated between both sides before the session started. "We are trying to initiate a ban on horse racing, not just in California but in this country," says animal rights activist Ellen Ericksen. Ericksen says she's concerned about the safety of the animals who spend most of their time racing. "Horses are dying left and right."Supporters of the horse racing industry say the animals are being taken care of. "We take every precaution we can with these horses because we love them," says Jockey Aaron Gryder. Gryder has been a jockey at the Del Mar Racetrack for the past 32 years. "It's not our job; it's our passion."This past summer, the Del Mar Racetrack implemented new protocols to ensure horse safety, like having veterinarians on the track during every workout. "We want to make sure when the horses step out on the racetrack they are 100% in great condition," says Gryder.Supporters also say doing away with horse racing could leave a lot of people without a job. "They have plenty of time to start looking for other employment," says Ericksen. "They have plenty of time to get re-trained."A statement sent to 10News from the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says: "Del Mar has implemented an unprecedented series of safety and welfare measures over the last several years and, while we always will strive to do better, these reforms are working. In addition, the horse racing industry in California supports 18,000 jobs and has a .6 billion economic impact in the state. The message appeared simple enough."We are here to end human trafficking," explained Jacob Sledge, who organized the Save Our Children rally. "We are also here to make reforming laws against pedophiles."Speeches and action calls from Sledge and other marchers made clear their alleged intentions."We are here today to share survivor stories, to give them support from each other, and to let the abusers know we are not scared anymore," explained a protester ahead of a survivor sharing her heartbreaking story of abuse.Sledge made another thing clear: "We are not affiliated with QAnon."QAnon is a baseless, far-right conspiracy theory alleging that a cabal of demonic pedophiles is waging an underground war against President Donald Trump. It has gained significant traction among conspiracy websites like 4Chan. The theory has been identified by the FBI as a potential source of domestic terrorism.Though the organizer denied ties to the conspiracy theory, signs and posters held by protesters hinted at support for similar ideas. The signs at the protest alleged prominent Democratic politicians are engaged in a secret pedophile ring.When asked if this rally had QAnon ties, one protester responded, "possibly. Posts on the page allege media complicity in pedophile rings, spread unfounded conspiracies about the involvement of celebrities and corporations in those rings, and call for violence, saying "dead pedophiles don't re-offend."Denver is not the first city to see rallies with close ties or related themes connected to QAnon. Rallies, under the banner "Save Our Children" and "Save the Children" have sprouted across the country and world. The esoteric 'Q' symbol, which shows support for the theory, has also appeared at Trump rallies and conservative protests since the idea gained traction.Trump has hinted support for followers of the theory, sharing several tweets from QAnon accounts that were later accused of antisemitism. He also said in a press conference this year that QAnon followers are his fans, and that they "love our country."The rally demonstrated the difficulty in separating the uplifting message of concern for the safety of children from the toxicity of unsubstantiated conspiracy theories peddled online.Before the demonstrators marched to various media outlets promoting their cause, a survivor shared her harrowing story."I am one in four and I will not be silent like those before me," she said with tears in her eyes. DENVER, Colo. - A group of teenagers is using social media to try to inspire younger generations to sign up to work at the election polls this November.The Poll Hero Project was started by a group of teens from Denver East High School as well as students from Princeton University as a way to inspire their peers to get involved.“I never really expected it to go anywhere. I mean, we don’t really have any money or really any advertising. It’s really just been using social media to get our message out,” said Leo Kamin, one of the project’s co-founders.Kamin is a 17-year-old who signed up to be a poll worker during the previous election for the first time after mother found out about the student poll worker program through the Colorado Secretary of State’s website and encouraged him to join.In Colorado, you must be 16 in order to serve as a poll worker. It is a paid position.“It really did open my eyes just to the process and how many things you have to have right,” Kamin said.Along with learning the intricacies of how the election process works, Kamin says he was able to bring his own set of skills to the polling place.“In Colorado, you can change your registration on your phone, and I was the only one of the greeters, the poll workers, who understood how to sort of explaining that on the website,” Kamin said. “I think there is that knowledge that comes from the people who have done this a lot and have voted for before, but I think there are also things that younger people bring that are valuable.”Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some areas are struggling to find enough poll workers to work on election day.Colorado has not had that problem for the most part, and places like Denver and Jefferson County say they experienced record interest this election.Still, the teens are using social media to encourage students across the country to check in with their counties to see whether they need help.One of the students who decided to sign up to be a poll worker for the first time is Ben Ginsberg. He’s still going through the training process to be ready for election day but says he’s excited about the opportunity.“I thought it was a great opportunity to help out and play my part,” Ginsberg said.Along with being a first-time poll worker, Ginsberg is also a first-time voter in this general election after participating in the primary.“I’m super excited to vote in the presidential election. It’s even more important than the primaries obviously. I think that was kind of my way to express my personal views,” Ginsberg said.He believes there is more interest in politics these days among his peers and many of his friends are excited for the opportunity to vote.Kamin is not so lucky; he missed the age deadline to be able to vote this election by just a couple of weeks. Still, Kamin says he’s excited to be able to have an opportunity to contribute.“I feel like because I can’t vote it makes it even more important to participate,” he said. “There are not many things you can do as a 17-year-old but this is one of them.”He’s still surprised by just how much popularity the project has garnered despite the fact that they have no money for advertising and have only been using social media to get their message out.Both teens will be missing school Monday and Tuesday in order to work the polls but say they hope their teachers and classmates understand the importance of the role they are playing in democracy. They hope even more teenagers will consider signing up in the future.“Sure, you may not be in charge of the country now, but you will be in the future, and this is your country. DENVER, Colorado — Authorities say one person is dead and four others have been wounded in a shooting in broad daylight in downtown Denver.It happened around 4 p.m. local time Monday near the busy intersection of 21st and Lawrence streets. A suspect or suspects remain at large. Police say the four wounded in the shooting were transported to Denver Health in stable condition. The fatal victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced at the scene.
