After living in California’s Bay Area for eight years, Andrew Sanchez moved his family to Hawaii’s countryside“There are those obstacles,” he said of living in a metropolitan area. “There’s incredible amounts of traffic, pollution, crime. You know, serious things.”Sanchez and his wife are both teachers and wanted to save money and live a slower pace of life with their children. They say those were big factors in moving out of the big city.“We wanted to have an opportunity to spend more time with them and we wanted to make the right steps to watch them the best life they could,” Sanchez said.Now more people are looking to do what the Sanchez family did -- leave the big city for a smaller suburb.“It’s not surprising given the pandemic we are experiencing,” said Lawrence Yun, chief economist of the National Association of Realtors.He says due in part to the COVID-19 crisis and more companies allowing employees to work from home, there’s an exodus from downtown areas across the country.“People will say, ‘Why am I living so close job center when I can have perhaps a better affordability -- housing affordability out in the suburbs,” Yun said.According to a recent Harris Poll survey, nearly one-third of Americans are considering moving to a less densely populated area because of the coronavirus outbreak.Yun says this could impact the real estate market.“Before the pandemic, there was a housing shortage,” he said. “We knew that homebuilders needed to build significantly more to fully satisfy the demand.”Looking to help to meet that demand is housing developer Brain Levitt.“People are coming to Colorado because of lifestyle choice,” he said.Levitt is the president of Nava Real Estate Development. His company recently finished a 196-unit development called Lakehouse area outside of downtown Denver.He says a third of buyers are from out of the of area.“What we are finding, just because the cost of living or maybe new job opportunities or even just the lifestyle -- getting out of the city and getting to a place where you can work and play, it just seems like it’s attracting a lot of people,” Levitt said.That attraction of living away from a big city, however, does come at a cost.“It really required me to check my entitlements,” Sanchez said.Back in Hawaii, Sanchez said his family did have to give up several amenities when moving out of a big city.In the end, however, it was well worth it.“My kids are safe,” Sanchez said. “And you can’t put a price tag on that.” 2501

About 20,000 residents are under mandatory evacuation orders as a Southern California fire -- which authorities say was set intentionally -- spread this week.The Holy Fire started Monday in the Cleveland National Forest and has so far destroyed 12 structures, according to fire authorities.A man has been arrested in connection with the fire that is wreaking havoc near the border between Orange and Riverside counties, which are among the most populous counties in California.The Holy Fire has burned 6,200 acres and is 5% contained.Although it's not the largest fire burning in the state, there are growing concerns about how it could affect residential communities -- including Lake Elsinore. Some small communities in Riverside County are under mandatory evacuation orders affecting about 7,000 residential structures, according to authorities.Forrest Gordon Clark, 51, was being held at the Orange County Jail on Wednesday on suspicion of two counts of felony arson, a count of felony threat to terrorize and misdemeanor resisting arrest, the Cleveland National Forest said via Twitter.He is being held on million bail and expected in court on Thursday.The charges being leveled could carry a life sentence, said Susan Schroeder of the Orange County District Attorney's Office."Arson is a terrible crime that destroys dreams," she said in a press conference Wednesday.Witness statements, physical evidence and fire burn patterns connected the man to the fire, said Shane Sherwood with the Orange County Fire Authority.Volunteer Fire Chief Mike Milligan told the Orange County Register that Clark was screaming in the community and sent an email that said "this place will burn" last week.Before he was arrested, Clark told a cameraman he was asleep when the fire started and had no idea how it began."Who would go out with low humidity, and high wind and highest heat temperatures this time of year and intentionally set the forest on fire?" asked Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer during Wednesday's press conference.An excessive heat warning for the fire area has been issued with temperatures higher than 100 degrees."We know this district burns, but it should never burn because of an intentional act," Spitzer said. "This shouldn't be called the Holy Jim Fire, this should be called the Holy Hell Fire."Spitzer added that his constituents are "scared" and "fleeing their homes.""They're leaving property behind, they're putting everything they can in the back of their cars as quickly as possible."Fire officials warned residents to heed evacuation orders."Even if you're miles way, you want to be prepared if you're near the fire area or in an environment that can burn," said Thanh Nguyen with the SoCal Team One Fire Management Team, who suggested having a packed bag ready to go.  2814

A wave of construction will bring thousands of new apartments to downtown in the next few years. As those complexes start to open, they could bring relief to San Diego's housing crisis.This July, Park 12 will be the biggest to open, adding 718 units to the downtown area. Projects like Luma, AV 8, Amo and Vici will add nearly 600 apartments to the area by the start of 2019."This is the most dynamic neighborhood in San Diego," says Rich Gustafson, the President of CityMark Development. They're putting the finishing touches on AV8, which will have 133 units."The demand is there," he says. "San Diego, in general, is slow in providing the housing supply, but we're doing the best that we can in Little Italy."It's not just apartments. Across Downtown, Civic San Diego says there are 1,213 condominiums either under construction or in the planning stages.
