Alex Padilla, an economics professor at MSU Denver, says rent control could bring unintended consequences, like lower quality housing, less incentive to build new properties and discrimination. “If we want to make housing less expensive, we need to allow for more building to take place,” Padilla says. But incredibly high cost of rent is pricing out people with good paying jobs. Even six-figure salary earners struggle in some cities. “I'm living day to day, just hoping I make enough money just to pay my bills, to be able to pay my rent, to be able to feed myself,” Ortega says. 1744

He grew up around the bay but got a better understanding of it's beauty."When I'm coming down the Honga River and there's nobody around and there's just water and green and untouched beauty, you really get an appreciation for the beauty of the bay."Hopkinson knew this was going to be quite a physical challenge but Mother Nature decided to make it a little more interesting."Pretty high winds, 10 to 15 knots, which was creating some pretty good wave, 2 to 3 feet and then we had much cooler than normal temperatures."And that was the first day. Chris knew out of 9 days, not all were going to be good, but taking a punch in the face on the first day had him rethinking this adventure. He was motivated from those following his journey."I mean, I got hundreds of text messages and social media posts and emails from people just saying how much they were behind me and how excited they were. I think everybody really liked having a break from all the really bad news to follow something really good."So, on the 7th day he had heavy winds blowing from the side and head on and high waves and had to stop, his shortest day yet, 17 miles... 3 miles shy of goal for the day."I just couldn't take it."So, with that challenge from Mother Nature, what does he do the next day?"I took that day personally and the next day we had our best day which was 36 miles."And then just one day left, off he goes with a little encouragement from his wife, Megan.And he did get it done. Newly released body camera video shows a Florida officer getting hurt during a boat rescue as Tropical Storm Barry stirred the waters. Deputy Robert Wagner is part of the marine unit with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. He was at the helm of a safe boat in the Destin East Pass Friday, trying to help a distressed boater, when a gigantic wave went over the bow and shattered the windshield. According to the department, water conditions were very rough because of Tropical Storm Barry. "Tropical Storm Barry has been no picnic for the OCSO Marine Unit!" the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said in the Facebook post about the rescue. 654

  

FORT MORGAN, Colo. -- Tenants at a Fort Morgan, Colorado, trailer park say they came home to find a letter from their landlord threatening to increase their rent if Joe Biden wins the election. “To all tenants:Please understand if Joe Biden is elected as our next president. Everything you do and have to pay for will change completely.Everything will be increased. Like paying A LOT more in taxes, utilities, gasoline, groceries, new permits, fees and regulations … everything! This also means your rent will be increased to cover expenses. Most likely, rent would double in price!If the current president is re-elected, we will not raise the rent for at least two years.Voting is your choice and I’m not telling you how to vote. We are just informing our tenants what we will do according to the election results.If Trump wins, we all win. If Biden wins, we all lose.Vote on November 3, 2020,” the letter said.” Cindy Marquez said her landlord, Bernie Pagel, signed the letter, which was left on her fence and dated October 19, 2020.“I don’t know what he’s trying to do, if he’s trying to buy more votes for Trump,” she said.It happened at Pagel Trailer Park off County Road 19 in Fort Morgan.Despite the line at the end telling tenants voting is their choice, Marquez said she viewed the letter as a threat and called it a form of voter intimidation.“It really is intimidating people,” she said. “If this does happen, these are gonna be your consequences.”The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office said it has received a complaint about it, which was forwarded it to the Attorney General.A spokesman for the AG’s office said it cannot comment on existing investigations, but Phil Weiser tweeted in September that “any voter intimidation is a crime and will be prosecuted.”Denver7 stopped by Pagel’s office at the Fort Morgan trailer park and no one answered the door.“Something has to be done because if he were to implement this, I don’t know what we’d do … honestly,” Marquez said. “What are we going to do if he does double it?
