EL CENTRO, Calif. (KGTV) - Two earthquakes shook the Imperial County city of El Centro Monday night. The first quake, which measured a 4.0 magnitude, was 1 kilometer east-northeast of the city at 6:13 p.m. The second quake was a 3.7 about 30 seconds later.A check of the U.S. Geological Survey's 'Did You Feel It' map showed shaking was reported in Calexico, about 12 miles away, and Yuma, Arizona.RELATED: Is there such a thing as earthquake weather? The quakes were "very quick", said an El Centro hotel clerk who did not wish to be identified.A server at Denny's said the shaking made his customers stand up out of concern, but no one was hurt. While no major damage has been reported, the quakes were strong enough to shake overhead lights and topple monitors on display at Staples, according to clerk Krosby Rider. 825

EL CAJON, Calif (KGTV) - The Cajon Valley Union School District has found a unique tool to help them teach thousands of refugee students, many of whom don't speak English. They're using soccer."The kids were exhausted after six hours of academics every day," says District Director of Community Engagement Michael Serban. "Time after school can be spent differently."Three days a week, English-learning refugee students take part in the Power Up program. They spend 45 minutes playing soccer, using the game to introduce words and concepts. They spend another 45 minutes in class working what they heard on the pitch."You can see the growth in the students' vocabulary," says Serban. "When they go back in the classroom, they're not just listening. They're using the words that they practiced to increase the basic foundational vocabulary."The program is only in its second year at Cajon Valley, but the problem of working with refugees spans decades.Since 1975, San Diego County has brought in 86,598 refugees. That's third-most in the state. Many of them settle in East County, where their children enroll in local schools."A lot of the students coming to us from refugee camps may not have been in school," explains Superintendent Dr. David Miyashiro. "They're coming to us in 7th or 8th grade with very low English language skills and also with literacy issues in their own language."Serban says families had been asking for a soccer program to help the kids adapt. The district teamed up with Sports for Learning to develop the curriculum. In addition to the soccer and vocabulary, the students get social and emotional counseling to help them cope with the trauma from their home country. It also teaches them the social norms of being in an American school.A few non-refugee students also participate in the class, to make sure the students make friends outside of the refugee community. The district also is a pioneer in helping all of its students learn about careers and options after school. They use the World of Work curriculum to help gauge the kids' interest and aptitude in a variety of career fields. That program helps the refugee students feel like they have a long-term future in America."Before we ask kids to learn to read, we have to show them why they need to learn to read," says Dr. Miyashiro. "These curricula bring relevance to their learning and connectivity to their future."The Power Up program is funded, in part, through a grant from the Refugee School Impact Program as part of the US Department of Health and Human Services. 2563

Dreher Township, PA (WNEP) -- Parents are expressing concern after a church announced it will hold a ceremony next week, and worshipers are encouraged to bring assault rifles with them, and the ceremony will be just down the road from an elementary school. The ceremony in Wayne County was planned before the mass shooting at a high school in Florida last week.Church leaders still plan to go ahead with the blessing of guns, which has some parents of elementary school students on edge.Sanctuary Church and Rod of Iron Ministries are one in the same, run by the Moon family from South Korea who started the controversial Unification Church.Church leaders said that state police wanted to know what the ceremony next week involving AR-15-style assault rifles is all about. At 10 a.m. next Wednesday, church leaders expect up to 600 people for a blessing ceremony, and many of those people are expected to be armed with AR-15s, the assault rifle used in recent mass shootings across the country."This will be a big thing for us. It's a new stage for us because it incorporates the rod of iron, as it is in Revelations. Revelations talks about the returning Christ ruling with the rod of iron."Tim Elder sat down with WNEP to explain the beliefs of the church, led by the Reverend Sean Moon.Moon is the son of the late Sun Myung Moon, who founded the controversial Unification Church that drew national attention in the 1970s and '80s. The Rod of Iron Ministries is an offshoot of that religious organization focusing on what it believes is the right of families to defend themselves with assault rifles."This rod of iron is the AR-15, in today's terms."The Moon family also owns Kahr Arms, a gunmaker that moved to Pike County a couple years ago. WNEP was at the opening ceremony at that time in Blooming Grove Township.Church leaders say the AR-15s will not be loaded for the ceremony next week and safety zip ties will be used. However, state police are involved. Elder says troopers have reached out for more information.Just down the road from the church is Wallenpaupack South Elementary School with 280 students, plus teachers and staff. In light of recent gun violence at schools, the planned ceremony with assault rifles is concerning for parents."It's something I would consider keeping my child home. It's scary," said Liz Zoccola."I wish they wouldn't have it at all. I don't think there's a good time to have it, especially this close," Kendra Hanor said. The ceremony was planned before last week's deadly rampage at a high school in Florida.Wallenpaupack Area school officials are deciding what, if anything, the school will do next Wednesday in response to the ceremony down the road.  2719

EL CAJON (CNS) - A motorcyclist was killed today in a collision with a truck on an El Cajon freeway onramp. The fatal crash on the entrance from Greenfield Drive to eastbound Interstate 8 occurred shortly before noon, according to the El Cajon Police Department and the California Highway Patrol. The accident forced closures of the connector and one westbound lane on the adjacent street, and prompted the CHP to issue a traffic alert for the area. The affected traffic lanes were open again as of 1:15 p.m., according to Caltrans. 537
