SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Sisu Academy, a free boarding school for at-risk teenage girls, needs help to get the school year started."We are a little cash strapped right now," says school founder Jabez Labret. "We need to get some cash in the door to get over the starting line so we can access those grant dollars coming this fall to keep the program running."Labret says the school has plenty of money lined up in grants and in-kind donations once classes begin, they need some bridge funding until then.He says the school's mission makes it a worthy cause for donations."This is more than just another school," Labret says. "This is truly about changing these girls' lives."The school will enroll 20 girls this fall, all of them from at-risk situations. They hope to add a freshman class each fall and eventually have 350 students."It could be drug or alcohol issues at home, domestic abuse, homelessness," he says. "It could be that mom and dad both work two jobs and are just struggling to be able to keep food on the table."Labret says a boarding school puts the girls in a stable, focused environment that will help them establish a foundation for the future."We don't just teach the academic side," he says. "We teach them social and emotional skills, the entrepreneurial side, we go out into the community and do community service. It gives us a lot of options to get out of the learning environment."One student who will enroll this fall says she's excited about the prospect."Going to school would help me so that I can get my mind off my troubles at home," says Analys Franklin. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Registrar of Voters is revising down its expected turnout numbers for the March primary from earlier projections. With an estimated 290,000 ballots still outstanding as of Thursday evening, turnout is now expected to fall between 47 and 52 percent of the county's registered voters. This means turnout will look similar to 2016's primary, which had about 50 percent participation. Original projections in January from the Registrar of Voters showed expectations of turnout between 55 and 60 percent. That number was revised in February to between 50 and 55 percent."It looks like turnout in this primary is about what it was in 2016 in San Diego," said professor Thad Kousser, department chair of the UC San Diego political science department. "We didn't see the spike we were expecting."However, Kousser points out that using turnout percentage can be misleading. Because of California's new Motor Voter law, there are more than 300,000 more registered voters in San Diego County than there were in 2016. Therefore, a matching 50 percent turnout would actually mean tens of thousands of new voters cast ballots in the 2020 primary. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego family of a Los Angeles firefighter who may have been kidnapped in Rosarito, Mexico, is speaking out.It’s been more than two weeks since 20-year veteran LA City firefighter Frank Aguilar was last seen after heading to his second home in Baja, California.“We’re hopeful. We haven't lost hope,” his local cousin Nancy told ABC10 News. She’s only providing a first name, due to safety concerns. “Nobody seems to know anything and it's very frustrating for the family to not know anything."On Wednesday, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that his office learned from Mexican authorities that the 48-year-old firefighter may have been violently kidnapped from his Baja condo. “We will work tirelessly to make sure that Frank is returned safely,” he said in a news conference."[The mayor] did mention that he is going to provide all resources from Los Angeles to help get my dad back,” said daughter Amaris Aguilar.“I had just spoken to my dad the morning that we discovered he was missing. When he left for Rosarito, he was describing how safe or how good he felt in that community. He wanted to retire there,” added daughter Bella Aguilar.The daughters say that his condo was in a guard-gated community.His family has told reporters that his phone is off and they've heard that his condo may have been ransacked, his vehicles are missing and Ring video shows a troubling scene.“We're going to get you back. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego FBI and prosecutors Monday announced a million reward for a wanted terrorist.According to the agency, Jehad Serwan Mostafa, 37, is a U.S citizen. During a Monday news conference, the FBI called Mostafa the “highest ranking American fighting overseas.” The FBI says Mostafa grew up in San Diego and, at some point, moved to Somalia and became a member of the al-Shabaab terrorist organization.
