Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a CNBC interview on Wednesday that government-funded coronavirus vaccines would be provided for free or at an affordable cost for the American public.Azar’s declaration comes as the government announced on Wednesday an agreement with Pfizer valued at .95 billion. An agreement stipulates that Pfizer would produce 100 million doses of a coronavirus vaccine for the US government to distribute as soon as one is ready.President Donald Trump added on Wednesday that after an initial 100 million doses are distributed, another 500 million doses would be received by the US government soon thereafter.“Hopefully, the approval process will go very quickly,” Trump said about getting the initial batch of 100 million vaccines. “And we think we have a winner there. We also think we have other companies right behind that are doing very well on the vaccines — long ahead of schedule.”But questions on who would get the vaccine remains a question. But the government vowed Wednesday that vaccines would be affordable."We will ensure that any vaccine that we're involved in sponsoring is either free to the American people or is affordable," Azar said.On Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper that he is encouraged by multiple vaccine candidates, and believes that things are still on track for a vaccine to be ready for production around the end of 2020 or start of 2021.“I think the timetable that we have discussed now over the past several months, luckily and fortunately, has really worked out OK,” Fauci said. “The results of several of the phase one trials of different candidates, not only one -- I'm reluctant to point out one that's going to be better than the other, because the proof of the pudding is whether it actually works in the field and is a safe and effective vaccine.” 1950

Hate crimes across the U.S. have risen to the highest level in more than a decade. And federal officials have recorded the highest number of hate-motivated killings since the FBI began collecting that data in the early 1990s. An FBI report released Monday shows there were 51 hate crime murders in 2019. That includes 22 people who were killed in a shooting that targeted Mexicans at a Walmart in the border city of El Paso, Texas, in August 2019. There were 7,314 hate crimes last year, up from 7,120 the year before. Advocates want the federal government to mandate police agencies report hate crimes to the FBI. The current system is voluntary. 655

HACKENSACK, N.J. — A New Jersey woman has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman who told her to wear a mask in a Staples office supplies store, according to police. The incident took place on July 29 at a Staples store in Hackensack. A woman who was using the fax/copier told Terri Thomas — who was wearing a mask over her chin — to adjust the mask, so it covered her mouth and nose.Thomas yelled at the woman and threw her to the ground, police said. It was later discovered that the victim had recently undergone liver transplant surgery. The victim suffered a fractured left tibia, which required surgery. The incident was caught on surveillance video.Thomas was arrested on Aug. 4 and charged with aggravated assault. This story was originally published by Stephen M. GREENWOOD, Ind. — An Indiana family is asking for help to identify a driver who was caught on camera plowing through their yard to destroy their Christmas decorations. The video starts with a man getting out of his black SUV and then walking up to take a closer look at the front yard where Casie Arnold says her family had a giant inflatable Christmas decoration. The man then gets back into his vehicle, backs up and plows straight through the family's yard and over the top of that 12-foot inflatable decoration. Neighbor cameras caught the whole thing on surveillance video, which you can see below.  642

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — A hate crime investigation is underway by the Virginia Commonweath's Attorney against the self-proclaimed president of the Virginia KKK after he allegedly drove his pickup truck into a group of protesters on Sunday.36-year-old Harry Rogers of Hanover, Virginia, was arrested Sunday after police say several witnesses saw Rogers rev his engine and drive into a crowd of protesters. The person who called police was checked by rescue at the scene and refused further treatment. The protest was one of the dozens of anti-police brutality marches that have taken place around the nation following the Memorial Day death of George Floyd. No one was injured during the incident. One protester reported that his bicycle was damaged.Rogers appeared in Henrico Court Monday morning, where he agreed to receive a court-appointed attorney. He was formally charged with two felonies — attempted malicious wounding and destruction of property — as well as misdemeanor assault and battery.During Monday's court appearance, prosecutors alleged Rogers told his arresting officers that he was the president of the Ku Klux Klan in Virginia and the highest-ranking member currently not in prison."The accused, by his own admission and by a cursory glance at social media, is an admitted leader of the Ku Klux Klan and a propagandist for Confederate ideology," Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor said in a statement. "We are investigating whether hate crimes charges are appropriate."She urged witnesses to call Henrico Police at 804-501-5000."While I am grateful that the victim's injuries do not appear to be serious, an attack on peaceful protesters is heinous and despicable and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law," she said. "We lived through this in Virginia in Charlottesville in 2017. I promise Henricoans that this egregious criminal act will not go unpunished. Hate has no place here under my watch.Rogers is due back in court in August. This story was originally published by WTVR in Richmond, Virginia. 2055
