SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A company with offices in Oceanside released data Friday supporting its drug remdesivir is helping severely ill COVID-19 patients recover.The data released by Gilead, who produces remdesivir, states there was a 62% reduction in risk of death, compared to patients who weren't given the drug, and 74% of remdesivir treated patients recovered by Day 14.Remdesivir was originally created to fight Ebola, a similar virus to COVID-19.Troy Kahle was diagnosed with COVID-19 and said he's alive today because of Kaiser Permanente doctors, nurses and remdesivir.He said he was admitted to the hospital March 14, and ended up in a coma for 12 days."The first memory I have is waking up with my hands strapped to the gurney and a tube down my throat," Kahle said he thought he was going to die and wishes no one to face what still haunts him.Friday he celebrated three months out of the hospital as a survivor of COVID-19.While the drug has helped people like Kahle, medical experts are wary."It's not a magic bullet," Molecular Biology Professor at UC San Diego Stephen Hedrick, PhD. said.He said the drug slows down the virus."It's going to decrease the severity of the symptoms of the viral infection, but it doesn't necessarily make you well overnight," he said comparing it to an antibiotic.This is because while the drug works to stop the virus from replicating, COVID-19 can counter it, "Coronaviruses, almost uniquely among RNA viruses, have an error correction capability."Survivors like Kahle, while thankful to be out of the hospital, aren't back to 100%."I get easily winded if I overexert myself, occasionally I'll get dizzy for no reason, I have foot pain when I wake up," Kahle said.Hedrick said he is optimistic, adding the drug is a good jumping off point to create a drug more suited to coronavirus, or a vaccine.In the mean-time both Kahle and Hedrick ask that we all wear our masks."If we all work together we can get to the other side of this pandemic," Kahle said.Gilead said they are ramping up supplies, "we have increased supply nearly 40-fold since January and our goal is to produce more than 2 million treatment courses by year-end and several million in 2021, if required."Gilead cautions that rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm the latest data. 2303

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old was hospitalized Saturday night after being shot at a gas station in Skyline. Police say the shooting happened at an Arco station near South Meadow Brooke and Paradise Valley Road. According to police, the victim and his friends were walking through the parking lot when one of them was shot. Witnesses told police an argument broke out between the victim and three other teens when one of the three boys, who are all under the age of 18, shot the 16-year-old in the stomach before running away. The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital where he is expected to survive. 613

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of ladies in the North County are part of a nonprofit group that has focused on philanthropic projects for 20 years. Since April, however, six of the women in the group have been on a new mission. "We all go in separate cars and are in a horseshoe line, and someone will ring the doorbell. When the person answers then we're in good shape to sing, ask them how they're doing and tell them we love them and care about them."The group, who call themselves Masquerade Brigade, sing to those who are elderly and vulnerable to COVID-19 on their birthdays. "Just the human connection means a lot to them and it makes them feel like they're not forgotten," said Sophia Bouvier, a member of the singing group.The individuals they sing to are people who they volunteered with before we entered a COVID world."They've texted us after, 'I've been visited by the Masquerade Brigade. You can't believe how uplifting it is to see their faces and listen to their smiles as they sing,'" described Bouvier.Their gift of singing, small gifts, and presence isn't something you can put a price tag on they said, "Kindness is free and it takes so little to make a big difference."The group is out singing every Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., and have visited over 25 people since April. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former San Diego Kaiser doctor who was caught watching child porn at work will have his license reinstated.The news of the reinstatement became available this week, in documents provided by the California Medical Board.Former psychiatrist Mark Zweifach went in front of the board three weeks ago for a hearing on reinstating his license. A video of the hearing recently became available to the public.For the first time on-camera, Zweifach describes his own shocking acts that still haunt him.LONGFORM: Former San Diego Kaiser doctor caught watching child porn at work tries to get his license back“Eleven years ago, on three occasions, I briefly viewed child pornography at my workplace,” he said.It was more than a decade ago that the admitted sex addict turned in his white coat, but the District Attorney's office didn't have enough evidence to bring criminal charges.California Medical Board paperwork reveals that the alarming discovery was made at a Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in El Cajon. Some of the paperwork reads, "While at work, on his Kaiser-issued computer, [he] viewed inappropriate images, including child pornography."“I didn't collect it. I didn't produce it. A 2014 La Jolla Light website article about a local puppet guild shows a photo of Zweifach as a puppeteer operating a large, red puppet.As of late July, he was listed as a board member of the San Diego Puppetry Guild’s website. The day after 10News reached out, his name was removed.Documents outline his road to rehabilitation, like a 12-step “Sexaholics Anonymous” program and “regular therapy.”During his recent hearing, he describes having confronted whatever happened to him as a kid that apparently made him vulnerable to addiction.“I did have a history of being exposed to childhood sexual experiences that profoundly affected me,” he explains.Zweifach also told the board that he’s had two relapses with viewing adult pornography, but it stopped there.“I thank God that in the last eleven years, I’ve been entirely free of viewing the underage images that led to the loss of my license,” he adds.Zweifach has expressed a great deal of remorse for his actions.His license will officially be reinstated on September 14th.Zweifach will be on five years of probation which includes a number of stipulations, including not treating minors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A frustrating mystery is plaguing commuters in Carmel Valley.A seemingly perfectly good brand new lane meant to ease traffic to the 56 has been coned off for months. The project adds a third lane on southbound Camino del Sur from around Highland Village place to Highway 56. Greg Agius, who commutes that way, says it's been coned off for months. A city staffer told him it would be complete by the end of August, but on Monday it was still inaccessible to drivers. RELATED: San Diego road repairs are ahead of scheduleAgius, who also bikes in the area, said it is making for a tight merge that has led to near fender benders. "It's backing up my commute," he said. "I've actually over the last three to four months had maybe half a dozen close calls."The lane is meant to lighten the congestion in Carmel Valley, which is getting increasingly congested as more housing is built. Developer Lennar hired contractor MGI to add the lane as part of its approval for area housing projects. RELATED: San Diego projects receive funding due to controversial gas tax"This is the one that baffles me the most because it's more dangerous what they've done with the cones than if the cones weren't here," Agius said. The problem rests with the traffic light at the intersection. It doesn't stretch far enough over to be visible to all cars in the new lane. Caltrans Spokesman Ed Cartagena gave an example of cars next to a semi-truck.They wouldn't be able to see the traffic light if not in front of them. Cartagena said it needs to be extended before anyone can benefit from the new asphalt. He also noted recent other work on the lane, above and below ground, including removal of an electric box ten inches above ground.  Either way, Cartagena said the new light should be installed by the end of the week, clearing the way for the lane to open. A city spokesman said the contractor had delays in obtaining the signal pole and mast-arm for the traffic light.
