SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A famous San Diego bike trail is open just in time for July 4. Wednesday, SANDAG opened a one-mile stretch of the newly-relocated and upgraded Rose Canyon Bike Path. The path is a segment of the Coastal Rail Trail that stretches along Interstate 5 from north Santa Fe Street to just north of State Route 52. SANDAG says the path will eventually connect to the future 44-mile Coastal Rail Trail, which will extend from Oceanside to Downtown San Diego. According to the agency, the Rose Canyon Bike Path is part of a Complete Corridor, running along the future Mid-Coast Trolley light rail line. 622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A preliminary 6.6-magnitude earthquake that hit near Ridgecrest was felt throughout Southern California on Independence Day.The earthquake was recorded at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday between Ridgecrest and Searles Valley, in San Bernardino County, according to the United State Geologic Survey (USGS). Several more aftershocks are expected in the next couple of days, according to USGS seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones.Before the earthquake, USGS also recorded two earthquakes measuring 4.0 and 2.2 in San Bernardino County.Here in San Diego, numerous locals, from downtown San Diego up to Oceanside, reported to 10News that they felt the quake. The San Diego County Fair halted rides Thursday for safety inspections after the earthquake, before reopening. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 105-year-old World War II veteran is set to receive his college diploma 83 years after graduating.Bill Vogt, who was one of the first students to set foot on San Diego State University's campus after it opened in 1931, will receive his diploma in commerce retro-dated to Feb. 1, 1935, on Thursday.Vogt graduated from SDSU mid-year in 1935 but never got a printed diploma. He is the last remaining SDSU student to have attended classes at the university's old campus in University Heights, according to the school.The special presentation comes after Vogt elected to become a lifetime member of SDSU Alumni in May, a special alumni program offered by the university. He's also believed to be the oldest person ever to become an Alumni lifetime member, the school added.The WWII veteran served in the US Navy, and also served in the Korea and Vietnam wars. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of friends from Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch have turned their summer boredom into a way to help others.Andrew Zhang, Jerry Wu, Nick Genovese and Rishi Peddakama are 3D printing face shields and donating them to local hospitals."I guess we were all just kind of feeling like restless and we needed to do something during this like difficult time," Zhang says on why he and his friends decided to start making PPE from scratch.The boys have turned their summertime hobby into a new non-profit, Shield Our Health Heroes. Their website has a place for donations, and all of the money goes towards materials for more face shields.So far, they've raised enough money to donate 750 face shields to 10 local hospitals."We've been told multiple times that our shields fit better and are better quality than a lot of the shields that they're getting," says Genovese."I really think we are making an impact in our community," adds WU. "Our products are actually really helping these health care workers who need these."The four friends each brought their unique talents to the group effort. Andrew came up with the idea and has spearheaded the project. Rishi built the website and set up the donation PayPal account. Jerry does all of the social media and advertising. Nick contacts the hotels and sets up the deliveries."We try to make it hassle free for them," says Peddakama."We just really want to give back during this time," says Zhang. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Voting in San Diego County Tuesday has been a relatively smooth experience, even with higher-than-normal turnout, a San Diego County spokesman said.Michael Workman, county communications director, said workers at the Registrar of Voters have been very busy. While official numbers were not available Tuesday afternoon, the county has received 430,000 mail-in ballots out of 1.2 million sent out, according to the Registrar of Voters.As of Monday, early voter turnout was "pretty robust," Workman said.RELATED: Election error: Voters left off roster at polling placeWorkman said polling places will probably be especially busy between 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., when they close.Between the various races and state propositions, "this is a very long ballot," Workman said.
