For students whose summer plans fell through, organizations across the country are working to make sure internships are still a possibility.The DeBruce Foundation is teaming up with partners to provide students a virtual head start in their careers.The national nonprofit foundation, based in Kansas City, Missouri, works to expand pathways to economic growth and opportunity. One of those ways is student success and internships.However, this summer, they had to pivot their summer plans due to COVID-19.According to Glassdoor, internship hiring fell 39 percent in April 2020 compared to the same time last year."We’re building talent and sometimes it’s talent for today, but sometimes it’s talent for tomorrow," The DeBruce Foundation Senior Director, Robin Smith said. "And so our work pipeline suffers if we don’t have those ways for people to gain work relevant skill. And so it functions on that level and then individuals' level of really connecting talent and opportunity."That's why the foundation is seeking out opportunities, not only to hire their own interns but partnering with area organizations that help students get internships."There are different partners that we work with that they wanted to test and try virtual internships," Smith said. "We were able to provide financial support for them and also different kinds of tools that we use."Hire KC, Startland Internship and Urban Leadership Fellowship are the partners the Foundation is working with and providing funding to allow more students the opportunity for a virtual internship.Alex Oleson, a rising senior at St. Louis University, is The DeBruce Foundation for this summer and says it's been a fairly smooth transition going into a virtual internship after completing online learning for the last three months."In some instances, it does give you a bit more flexibility," Oleson said. "It’s kind of like working from home but I like it and I like that there’s definitely an aspect of dependability."Oleson is studying political science with a minor in economics and urban poverty studies. He said he's been able to delve into various areas with the foundation, including strategic planning, media, marketing and communications and product development, where he's able to provide his insight.The foundation also has a product development lab. Florida is racing to refill its drained gas stations to allow millions of residents to return to their homes following mass evacuations caused by Hurricane Irma.Historic demand for gasoline sparked major gas shortages in the days before Hurricane Irma struck Florida over the weekend.At least 60% of the gas stations in Miami-Fort Lauderdale and Gainesville are without fuel, according to estimates on Monday morning from crowdsourcing platform GasBuddy. Roughly half of the gas stations in Jacksonville, Tampa, West Palm Beach and Fort Myers are also empty after Floridians took to their cars to flee the path of the storm.These widespread gasoline outages threaten to make life even more difficult for Florida residents as they try to return home to see if their property suffered damage from Irma's powerful winds and storm surge.The big key to fixing the gas shortages will be getting Florida's ports reopened to receive fuel shipments. Florida has few refineries of its own, making it reliant on tankers and barges to meet virtually all of its huge appetite for fuel.Hurricane Irma forced the closure of most major Florida ports as of Friday evening. The ports are unlikely to reopen until Tuesday at the earliest, according to Goldman Sachs. That suggests just a "gradual" restocking of Florida's gasoline supplies, the investment bank wrote in a research report on Monday."Without the ports, there's no fuel flowing. It's likely the number of gas outages will rise before they start falling," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.Related: The costliest natural disasters in U.S. historySignificant damage to major ports could further complicate matters. Hurricane Harvey forced the shutdown of the Port of Corpus Christi in Texas for a record six days -- and other ports faced restrictions that delayed shipments.However, Florida appears to have avoided the worst-case scenario that Irma threatened. That suggests Florida's ports may recover faster than Texas ports did."My hunch is those gasoline outage numbers are going to drop very, very fast. By next week, things should be very close to normal," said Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis at the Oil Price Information Service.Port Tampa Bay, the state's largest port, only suffered "very minimal" damage, port officials told CNNMoney. While Port Tampa Bay remains shut to vessels until the Coast Guard approves its reopening, on Monday morning petroleum trucks were approved to resume transporting fuel from the port."It's a small miracle," Paul Anderson, the port's president, said in an interview. "I can't tell you how relieved we are that we're not in a full-blown recovery. It could have been weeks of repairs."Port Everglades, located in Fort Lauderdale, said in a statement on Monday that it is assessing damage and plans to reopen to vessels following approval from the U.S. Coast Guard. The port accounts for one-fifth of Florida's energy requirements and receives more than 12.5 million gallons of petroleum products each day.Unfortunately, recovery efforts could be hampered by Hurricane Jose, which could move near Florida later this week."The window to make repairs or get deliveries may be quite small" due to Hurricane Jose, said Hillary Stevenson, director of oil markets at research firm Genscape.Related: Hurricanes will probably hurt the economy, but not for longOther logistical challenges stand in the way of restoring Florida's gas situation, especially widespread power outages that have left some gas stations in the dark."We need to get their power restored in order for the fuel to begin running in their pumps," said James Miller, director of communications for the Florida Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association.Some gas stations may have also suffered damage from the hurricane, while others could be blocked by road closures.Florida officials scrambled before Irma hit to ease the gas shortage. The state's ports prioritized fuel shipments and Governor Rick Scott provided police escorts to tanker trucks. Scott also encouraged gas stations along evacuation routes to stay open late by offering gas station workers police escorts to make sure they got out before the storm hit.The federal government has offered assistance as well by waiving restrictions on the types of cargo ships that can deliver fuel and on the types of fuel that can be used in Florida and other states.The-CNN-Wire 4428

FOSTER CITY, Calif. – The maker of remdesivir, a drug shown to shorten recovery time for severely ill COVID-19 patients, has released its pricing for the treatment.Gilead announced Monday that it will charge ,340 for a typical treatment course for people covered by government health programs in the United States and other “developed countries.”As for Americans with private insurance, they’ll be charged ,120, “because of the way the U.S. system is set up and the discounts that government healthcare programs expect,” Gilead said.Based on current treatment patterns, Gilead said the vast majority of patients are expected to receive a five-day treatment course using six vials of remdesivir. Individually, each vial will cost 0 for those covered by a government insurer, and 0 per vile for those with a private insurer.In poorer countries, with less health care resources, generic drugmakes will be allowed to make the drug and sell it for far less than in the U.S.The pricing has already come under fire, because the development of the drug was largely funded by taxpayer money.Gilead’s CEO, Daniel O’Day, wrote in an open letter that the company approached its pricing decision with the aim of helping as many patients as possible, as quickly as possible.“At the level we have priced remdesivir and with government programs in place, along with additional Gilead assistance as needed, we believe all patients will have access,” wrote O’Day.O’Day said Gilead has entered into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) whereby HHS and states will continue to manage allocation to hospitals until the end of September. After this period, once supplies are less constrained, HHS will no longer manage allocation.The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has actually not yet approved remdesivir for any use, but it has granted an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the treatment of hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19.This treatment is much different than COVID-19 vaccines, which are still in development. Forget about drones and armies of people driving Amazon trucks. One big Wall Street firm thinks Amazon's plan to build up its air freight delivery service may be what really winds up hurting UPS and FedEx.Morgan Stanley analyst Ravi Shanker said in a report Tuesday that both delivery giants could lose 10% of their revenue to Amazon Air by 2025. Shanker cut his price targets on UPS (UPS) and FedEx (FDX) and both stocks plunged more than 6% as a result.It was a particularly gruesome day for transportation stocks due to worries about the broader economy and confusion about the status of US-China trade talks.The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which includes FedEx and UPS as well as leading airlines, truckers and railroads, fell 4.4% -- its worst drop since June 2016.But Shanker paints a picture that should be extremely worrisome to UPS and FedEx.He notes that Amazon (AMZN), which currently is leasing 40 cargo jets, could eventually have 100 planes running and estimates that the planned Amazon Air routes could overlap with more than two-thirds of the volume flown by UPS and FedEx.That's bad news for both companies since Shanker said that UPS and FedEx each generate nearly 20% of their overall revenue from US air deliveries.Amazon has made big investments to bulk up Amazon Air. In the past few years, it has bought stakes in two freight delivery airlines -- Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) and Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings (AAWW).It also announced plans to invest .5 billion in order to build an Amazon Air hub on more than 900 acres of land that it is leasing near the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Amazon bought an additional 210 acres earlier this year.There's a simple reason why Amazon will want to handle more of its own air deliveries. According to Shanker, Amazon could save between billion and billion next year. That works out to about 3% to 6% of its global shipping costs.But on a day when the broader market was tanking, investors didn't seem too enthusiastic about Shanker's thoughts on Amazon either.
