SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As hundreds of Regal Cinemas in the United States face the potential for closure, other movie businesses are thriving.Cineworld, the parent company for Regal Cinemas, tweeted Sunday, saying “We can confirm we are considering the temporary closure of our U.K. and US cinemas, but a final decision has not yet been reached. Once a decision has been made we will update all staff and customers as soon as we can.”Conversely, a locally owned San Diego theater is thriving during this time. Douglas Yeagley owns Cinema Under the Stars, a small, outdoor Mission Hills movie theater. The business is in its 29th year and has always been outside, a key factor in keeping them afloat during the pandemic.RELATED: Regal Cinemas reportedly preparing to close all U.S. theaters, including eight in San Diego“People are honestly kind of starving for some kind of safe entertainment. You can’t do live music, you can’t do anything like that, you have to be in your car or something like that to see a performance of some nature, so this particular works well because you are super safe here, open-air,” said Yeagley. He said they’ve had to change a few aspects of business, including cutting seats from 62 to 42 per showing, spacing seats out for social distancing, cleaning seats twice between each showing, and also requiring face masks when standing. Even with the changes, they sell out most nights.Yeagley said he’s been to a few indoor movies since the pandemic and noticed the lack of others inside the theater, noting that there are a few key factors keeping people away from the indoor movie setting. The indoor location is a large factor, but also the delay of the release of major pictures is keeping people away.“There’s got to be a reason to come to that movie and you have to have an interest in that movie,” he said. The announcement from Regal Cinemas comes shortly after the announcement that the release of the latest Bond film would be delayed from November of 2020 to April of 2021 and the filming of many major pictures is delayed. In San Diego County, indoor movie theaters are able to operate at either 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer. While the indoor movie industry is taking a hit right now, Yeagley said he expects it to bounce back eventually, however it will take time and could look different once it recuperates.“I think so because people like to escape and that’s what you do in a movie. You quit thinking about it, are present for two hours, focused on something. That’s enjoyable. I can’t imagine people not wanting that.” 2581

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As apprehensions rise to new levels, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the U.S.-Mexico border has reached a breaking point. At the San Diego sector alone, the apprehension of unaccompanied minors rose by 80 percent from fiscal year 2018 to fiscal year 2019. Most of the minors made their way to the U.S. from Guatemala and Honduras. The number of families detained in San Diego saw the largest increase. RELATED: Nearly 300 families may have been separated before 'zero tolerance' took effect, admin saysDuring fiscal year 2018, 1,032 families were apprehended at San Diego’s border. That figure rose sharply to 8,217 so far in fiscal year 2019, an increase of nearly 700 percent. Most families also came from Guatemala and Honduras. The agency says it’s also facing more large groups. So far this fiscal year, CBP reports 70 large groups of 100 or more compared to just 13 large groups in 2018. Border Patrol Chief Brian Hastings said during Tuesday's news conference that they've seen about 2,400 fraudulent family claims from April last year to February, with some migrants falsely claiming they are under 18-years-old or saying they are family members when in reality, they are not. RELATED: Secondary border wall construction startsCBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan released a statement following the release of the report saying in part, "We are currently facing a humanitarian and national security crisis along our southwest border." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Attention is now turning to the southern border after Wednesday's border closure with Canada. On Thursday, the walkway into Tijuana was nearly empty but the San Ysidro Port of Entry remains open, for the time being. “It's going to have major implications for us, particularly for us here in Southern California, if we see a closing of the U.S.-Mexico border,” says Dr. David Shirk with the University of San Diego, where he works as a professor with an area of expertise in U.S.-Mexico relations. RELATED: Senate GOP to unveil stimulus plan that includes ,200 payments for most AmericansShirk says that if the U.S. proceeds with any closure, not only will families be separated, but there will also be a major shortage of supplies like foods that are harvested in Baja and transported north. “Something that the federal government needs to take into consideration is that our economy is critically interlinked with Mexico,” he adds.As of Thursday morning, there were only 118 reported cases of COVID-19 in Mexico. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been criticized in recent days for not taking enough containment measures. Video on the Washington Post's website shows him shaking hands at a big rally last Saturday and kissing a supporter. RELATED: San Diego County Westfield malls close 'majority of its operations' amid outbreakThursday, he tweeted out from a press conference to act calmly, disseminate official information and adopt hygiene measures. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Thursday that he has requested for the State of Baja to adopt the same precautionary measures that are being taken in San Diego. This Wednesday, the Mayor of Tijuana decided to cancel events with more than 100 people. Schools in Tijuana are reportedly now closed. RELATED: San Diego and national closures, cancellations, postponements due to COVID-19Shirk says Mexico has likely been slower to respond to the pandemic out of fears over its own economy. “I think there's real concern in the López Obrador Administration that an overly drastic response to the coronavirus crisis could cripple Mexico's economy and that has to do with the fact that for the last couple of years Mexico's growth rate has basically remained about flat," Shirk. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sent 10News a statement about any possible plans for a border closure:“What we can say right now is that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) highest priority is to ensure the health, safety and security of our workforce and the American people. CBP agents and officers will maintain situational awareness while identifying individuals who have traveled from or transited through countries affected by COVID-19. CBP continues to process cargo as there has been no identified threat as it relates to cargo shipments.CBP officers use a combination of traveler history records, questioning, observation, and self-declarations to further identify individuals requiring enhanced health screening by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Currently, all CBP ports of entry are following the same operational guidance as issued by Presidential Proclamations and the Department of Homeland Security. If CBP observes a traveler with symptoms of COVID-19, we will refer them to the (CDC) and or DHS medical contractors for enhanced health screening. CDC personnel are responsible for the enhanced health screening of travelers in all locations nationwide.CBP has issued guidance to all employees that outlines the current comprehensive use of Personal Protective Equipment including guidance regarding wearing masks in the appropriate circumstances. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As reports surfaced that the Alliance of American Football would suspend all league operations, its teams — and fans — were left in a state of limbo.Fans searching for tickets to the San Diego Fleet's April 14 game at SDCCU Stadium against the Arizona Hotshots were met with a screen reading, "Oh-no!
