SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Phone and tuition scams have stole more than 0,000 from the UCSD community since July, university police warn.Police say in just two months, victims within the university community have collectively lost 2,000 to suspects claiming they were with law enforcement in their home country. The scammers would demand money or threaten the victims with detention.In the case of phone scams, scammers would call and pose as an IRA employee or officer claiming to have an open case or, for international students, law enforcement of their home country. International students should refer to their local consulate for any type of government communications.When it comes to reported tuition scams, police say scammers have been targeting students with promises of tuition reduction if they use a third-party service to pay their fees. Scammers often promise a 5% tuition discount and request the victims send the reduced tuition funds. The scammers then request the victim's university credentials to pay their tuition with fraudulent or stolen credit card info. But by the time credit card companies receive the information that the the payment was fraudulent, the scammers have already withdrawn the victims' funds.RELATED: The Venmo scam you should know aboutVictims are then left out of the money paid to scammers and still paying their own tuition.Police say students should never give out their personal information to anyone and work through UC San Diego-approved payment methods. She's living with cerebal palsy which has kept her in a wheelchair. But, it's not holding her back. "When people look at me. It's been really hard, but I overcome that. You can do anything, I tell people you can do anything in the world," said Solis.Solid has worked in the security field and wants to move onto bigger opportunities so she decided to attend this job fair.Charlene Autolino is the chair of San Diego Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, which put the fair together. She said the event gives many more than just a job, but motivation to strive for more."Imagine being told for years that you can't do anything because of this disability, or you aren't capable of able which is not true," said Autolino.The organizer of this event will also be hosting a similar job fair specifically for veterans in November. 1031

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Monday identified the victim in a deadly Mount Hope-area shooting in late December. According to police, 54-year-old Darryl Toliver was shot and killed in an alleyway on the 800 block of Raven Street around 2:45 a.m. December 29. Witnesses told police and unknown man and two vehicles were spotted leaving the area around the time of the shooting. Police said at the time that the man was only a person of interest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday, San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott announced that the courts officially ordered the closure of a notorious independent living facility home off Ewing Street in the College Area, following a lawsuit brought by the City last November.“The circumstances were egregious,” Elliott told ABC 10News on Monday. She said the facility is no longer allowed to operate anywhere in San Diego County.“It was filthy. There were bed bugs. There were roaches. The air quality was not good,” she added. Officers had reportedly been called out nearly 300 times for issues like disturbing the peace and suicide threats.Now, the facility’s manager, operator and owners are ordered to pay a collective 7,000 in fines and restitution for victims.Eric Ching represents the homeowners who claim they had no idea the property was being used as an independent living facility. “They’re in Hong Kong. They’re elderly…they own this property [and] have a property manager that was supposed to manage this property. They were unaware of this problem until last year,” he told ABC 10News.Generally, independent living facilities provide the most vulnerable people with a last chance for housing before becoming homeless. This house had ten people living inside using disability checks to pay rent of up to ,000 a month.Elliott said the closure was part of a bigger crackdown. “It is one of our biggest objectives at the City Attorney's Office. We feel like we're the office that can stand up for the little guy…the most vulnerable [person] who otherwise would have nobody else to call,” she added.Elliott said that the facility’s operator, Mark Rogers, is charged with elder abuse and threats in a separate criminal case, which is still unresolved in the courts.ABC 10 News reached out to the attorneys for the other parties involved and are waiting for replies. 1875

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One man was shot after a fight broke out near a house party in San Diego’s Jamacha-Lomita neighborhood late Saturday night. According to police, the shooting happened on the 1100 block of Koe Street at 11 p.m. Witnesses told police a fight broke out in the street near the house party before shots were fired. Police say the suspect left the scene while the victim was taken to Paradise Valley Hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The suspect was taken into custody after he was found at a nearby 7-Eleven with a gun in his car. At this time, the names of the suspect and victim haven’t been released. 645
