Three people were killed and 16 were injured after a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus and a private tour bus collided in Queens, causing one of the buses to crash into a building. The driver of the Dahlia Travel and Tours bus, which struck the building, was killed in the crash, along with a passenger in the MTA bus and a pedestrian on the sidewalk, according to the NYPD."We've had a really tragic morning here in Flushing, Queens. Just shocking to see the scene over there. Hard to compare it to anything I've ever seen, the sheer destruction from the impact of this collision," said Mayor Bill de Blasio during a press conference Monday morning.According to the MTA, a Q20 bus was struck by the private bus on Northern Boulevard and Main Street at 6:21 a.m. Investigators were interviewing the driver of the MTA bus, who is among the injured. The injured all have been transported to nearby hospitals, de Blasio said."The first thing we need to understand is what happened here," he said, "because we do not know exactly what happened, if anybody was specifically at fault."The FDNY was working on accessing the building impacted by the crash to make sure it is secure and safe."The impact of this collision on the building was very, very substantial," said de Blasio. The cause of the collision is still being investigated."Very concerned about the speed, but the most important thing is safety. We want to make sure we understand exactly what happened and we prevent this from ever happening again," said MTA Chairman Joe Lhota.A representative for Dahlia Travel and Tours could not immediately be reached for comment.The-CNN-Wire 1650

They come and go with less frequency now: empty trains across the country as this nation's public transit system finds itself in peril, with millions of Americans changing their commute routines because of COVID-19."Transit is definitely in trouble," said Jarred Johnson, who oversees the group Transit Matters. It's not the empty trains and buses that bother Johnson so much as the proposed cuts on the horizon, as ridership nationwide has plummeted. An estimated 36 million people across the country depended on public transit before the pandemic, but they just aren't riding right now, so revenues are down dramatically. In Washington D.C., the Metro is losing nearly 0 million a month; New York City's MTA is facing billion in potential cuts and San Francisco’s light rail is more than million in the hole. Public transit lines in nearly every major city across the country are facing financial uncertainty."It’s really time for our political leaders to step up and provide the funding transit needs," Johnson added.Another big concern is that if public transit services are cut now, they won't be there for riders when the pandemic is over. Used car sales are also booming with the average price of used vehicles up more than 9 percent, leading transit advocates to worry that some riders might be gone permanently."It’s not like people are choosing to not take transit on their trips, they’re not taking trips," explained Beth Osborne, with Transportation for America.Osborne's biggest fear is that if cities and states cut public services, people won't be able to get back to work on the other side of the pandemic."I think we have to ask ourselves: do we want our economy to function or not?" Osborne said. 1730

Three UCLA basketball players accused of shoplifting in China last week were flying back to Los Angeles on Tuesday, the commissioner of the Pacific-12 athletic conference said, hours after US President Donald Trump said he asked his Chinese counterpart to help in the case. The three freshmen -- LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill -- were allowed to leave China on the US-bound flight after the situation was "resolved to the satisfaction of the Chinese authorities," said Larry Scott, commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference, of which UCLA is a member."We are all very pleased that these young men have been allowed to return home to their families and university," Scott said in a news releaseThe three were arrested last week while their team was in the Chinese city of Hangzhou ahead of the squad's season opener in Shanghai. They were questioned on suspicion of stealing sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store near their hotel. The trio stayed at the hotel, reportedly awaiting next steps in their case, while their teammates went to Shanghai, where UCLA defeated Georgia Tech 63-60 on Saturday. The three also remained in China as their team returned to the United States over the weekend.Scott did not say how the case was resolved; a conviction of grand larceny in China could result in years of prison. But Trump said Tuesday that he had asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help.UCLA's trip coincided with Trump's two-day state visit to the Chinese capital, Beijing, as part of his 13-day trip to Asia. Trump told reporters Tuesday that Xi had been helpful in working to resolve the case.Scott acknowledged Trump, among others, in his statement."We are grateful for the role that our Chinese hosts played, and for the courtesy and professionalism of the local authorities," Scott said. "We also want to acknowledge UCLA's significant efforts on behalf of their student-athletes."Finally, we want to thank the President, the White House and the US State Department for their efforts towards resolution."Trump's request was first reported by the Washington Post.  2086

There have now been more than 2 million confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the United States, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. surpassed the milestone early Thursday morning. More than 112,000 people have died in connection with the virus in the United States — all of them coming since February.Across the country, many regions are seeing a gradual increase in cases as states ease lockdown restrictions. Earlier this week, 14 states reported 7-day highs associated in newly-reported cases. Some of those see increases have occurred in rural areas of the country.More than 7.25 million people worldwide have contracted the disease since it was first detected in China late last year. The U.S. continues to lead all countries in confirmed cases, followed by Brazil (about 740,000 cases), Russia (about 493,000 cases) and the United Kingdom (about 290,000 cases). The U.S.also leads all countries in deaths linked to the virus, followed by the U.K. (about 41,000), Brazil (about 38,000) and Italy (about 34,000).Health experts suspect that the true number of people who have been infected with the coronavirus is likely much higher. Many people often experience mild symptoms and never seek out a test. Some countries, like the U.S., were also limited by a lack of testing resources at the beginning of the outbreak.Though there is currently no cure or vaccine for the coronavirus, Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases says he hopes the NIH will have a "couple hundred million" doses of a viable vaccine available by the end of the year. 1630
