SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person was found dead Tuesday morning in the Sunset Cliffs area, police said.Emergency personnel responding to a report of a person down near Ladera Street found the body around 6:30 a.m., San Diego police public-affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said.The identity of the deceased and details regarding the circumstances of the fatality were not immediately available.Personnel from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office responded to the scene and an autopsy will be done to determine the cause and manner of death.There were no indications of any suspicious circumstances in connection with the death, Hernandez said. 653

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Multiple local and nonprofit organizations around San Diego County will host Christmas meals Tuesday for underserved and low-income residents.Salvation Army San Diego will host its 35th annual Christmas meal, beginning at 11 a.m. at Golden Hall at 202 C St. The organization expects hundreds of volunteers to assist with the event. Volunteers will escort attendees to their seats and serve them a traditional holiday meal.Serving Seniors will also host its annual Christmas meal for low- income and homeless San Diego County seniors, many of whom would otherwise spend the holiday alone. About 350 seniors will enjoy a meal of Cornish hen with Mornay sauce, cornbread dressing, whipped potatoes, green peas and carrot cake, according to the organization. The meal begins at 11 a.m. at 1525 Fourth Ave.Rev. Shane Harris, former president of the National Action Network, will host his second annual community Christmas breakfast at the National Black Contractors Association. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who allegedly struck and gravely injured a bicyclist near Lindbergh Field last month, then fled San Diego and was arrested in Kern County, pleaded not guilty Monday to a felony hit and run charge.Mauricio Flores, 29, is accused in the Aug. 21 crash at India and West Washington streets that seriously injured a 66-year-old man.The victim was hospitalized with what police at the time said was a life-threatening head injury. His current condition is unknown.Police said Flores was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan that struck the victim.Video footage shot by a witness shows the driver of a van, which had Georgia license plates, pulling to a stop following the collision and getting out along with a female passenger, identified by police as 50-year-old Jessica Bailey.In the video, the pair walked over to the where the injured man was lying on the side of the road. After looking at him for few moments, the driver pulled the bent bicycle out from under the front of the van and set it aside, then got back into the vehicle along with his companion and drove off. A second, male passenger also was seen getting out of the van in the video, but he was not identified by police.About one week after the crash, San Diego police posted Flores and Bailey's names and pictures online and asked for the public's assistance in locating the suspects.According to the California Highway Patrol, an off-duty Kern County CHP officer who had seen a flyer about the hit-and-run case came across the Caravan while riding his motorcycle in Lake Isabella, an unincorporated community about 35 miles northeast of Bakersfield.The officer reported the van, which had California government-agency license plates.Three days later, another CHP officer spotted the van -- now bearing Vermont plates -- in a parking lot outside a Vons store in the area and called in sheriff's deputies, who found Flores and Bailey and arrested them, CHP spokesman Robert Rodriguez said.Flores was booked Sept. 3 into a San Diego County jail and remains held on 0,000 bail following his Monday morning arraignment. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - New health restrictions took effect Monday in San Diego County and the rest of Southern California, shutting down indoor service at restaurants among other closures, due to the rapidly increasing number of coronavirus hospitalizations.A state-mandated "regional stay-at-home" order went into effect at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, triggered when intensive-care unit bed availability remained below 15% after Saturday's daily update, according to the California Department of Public Health.The 11-county Southern California region's available ICU capacity was 12.5% Saturday, a decrease from 13.1% the day before. The ICU capacity Sunday for the region was 10.3%. San Diego County had 20.5% of its ICU beds available as of Saturday.On Sunday, the county reported 35 new hospitalizations, bringing the total to 4,871. Three more patients were placed in intensive care, bringing the total to 1,068.The Southern California region consists of San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, Imperial, Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.The stay-at-home order will be in place for three weeks and prohibits gatherings of people from different households. Regions will be eligible to exit from the order on Dec. 28 if ICU capacity projections for the following month are above or equal to 15%.On Sunday, San Diego County officials reported 1,703 new cases of COVID-19 and seven additional deaths.That brings the total number of cases to 92,171 with 1,062 deaths.County Supervisors Chairman Greg Cox said the three-week stay-at-home order was tough to take."There's no way around it," Cox said during a special Saturday briefing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman who caught herself on fire in her kitchen and her husband were burned when he rushed in to help his wife inside their home in the Bay Terraces neighborhood Sunday, fire officials said.The stove fire inside a home on the 7500 block of Careybrook Lane ignited about 3 p.m. Sunday, fire officials said.The husband used whatever he could find in order to help his wife, San Diego Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Raines said."Eventually, there was water used from a bathroom," San Diego police Lt. Mike Ramsay told the station. "But due to whatever was used (by the husband) part of the flash, part of the fire, his clothing caught on fire."The husband and wife were taken to the UCSD hospital burn center.
