SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With so many families feeling the financial impact of COVID-19 this year, a Linda Vista family is hoping to quietly bring some holiday cheer to neighbors by taking on the role of Secret Santa.Jaelyn,13, Jayda, 11, and Jessica, 4, will be doing plenty of wrapping this holiday season. Their mom Rhian and her partner, Jeff Leardini, are determined to deliver some holiday cheer."There are so many families that are worried about how they're going to make it to tomorrow. Christmas is the last thing on their mind. We want to take that worry away," said Leardini.Leardini posted on the Nextdoor app an offer to buy and wrap a Christmas toy for any neighbors in need, no strings attached. Leardini, a sales manager for a pet supply company, and his girlfriend, a nurse, kept their jobs during the pandemic."We feel very fortunate and want to help people," said Leardini.During this holiday season, his family are now playing the part of Secret Santa."We just thought there are people that might be embarrassed to go to organizations, so we thought can we help them without them having to go through a lot of red tape," said Leardini.So far, a handful of neighbors have responded to his offer"It's been really emotional reading the messages," said Leardini.Some are dealing with lost jobs, others with COVID-related health issues. Those families will soon receive something extra under the tree."Want to deliver smiles to them, even if it's just for one day. Their children will be happy, and that in turn will deliver joy to their family. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two prized pieces of San Diego sports history will be placed up for auction this week.Two awards belonging to San Diego Padres legend Tony Gwynn are going on the auction block Tuesday, according to listings from SCP Auctions.Gwynn's 14-karat gold 1998 National League Championship ring and Rawlings Career Gold Glove award are available for bidders starting at 10 a.m. Bids for each item begin at ,000.RELATED: San Diego Padres are bringing back the brown uniforms in 2020The reasoning behind the memorabilia auction was immediately clear. In 2018, the Gwynn family's Poway home was put up for auction, with bids starting at .2 million, but failed to sell.While Gwynn's skills earned him a spot in the MLB Hall of Fame and millions over his career, bad investments forced him to file bankruptcy in 1987.Last year, the Gwynn family settled a wrongful death lawsuit against the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company. The amount of the settlement was not disclosed, but Gwynn's family said the “matter has been resolved to all parties’ satisfaction."Gwynn died from salivary gland cancer in 2014. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the CDC has issued guidance for the cruise ship industry to reopen during the pandemic, the Port of San Diego says it's too soon to tell when the industry would restart locally.Friday, the CDC urged a "phased approach" to reopening the industry that has been largely shuttered since April following a no-sail order due to the pandemic. The agency says cruise lines will need to test safety protocols via mock voyages with volunteers before they can host passengers. Still, the order was the first movement on cruise ships since the CDC issued its no-sail order in March to help stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. Adam Deaton, Port of San Diego cruise business representative, told ABC 10News that the port will have to coordinate with cruise companies on what their next steps will be."It is too soon to say how soon sailing could resume in San Diego. Our next steps will be to coordinate with Holland America and Carnival on their plans, as they are the first few cruises on our schedule. Currently, our first scheduled cruise is Dec. 19 with Holland America’s Koningsdam. If any cruise lines request to conduct test sailings in San Diego, we will coordinate with all relevant federal, state and local agencies," Deaton said.RELATED: CDC offers framework for cruise lines to start sailing againAccording to the Port of San Diego, 70 cruises have been canceled during the 2020-21 season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, a record-breaking 3.7 million acres have already burned in more than 8-thousand wildfires this year.Both Cal Fire San Diego and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are preparing to respond to potential fire disasters, as dangerous weather conditions return to San Diego County.“We know the potential is there,” said Thomas Shoots, a public information officer for Cal Fire. “We’re holding all our firefighters on duty, and we’re staffing on every piece of equipment to make sure we’re covered, we’ve brought on contract dozers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Too many young military families in San Diego are finding themselves trapped in mountains of debt, not knowing where to turn.It's a devastating problem that the nonprofit Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) is working to tackle."It's a real challenge, and I think we are setting these families up for failure a lot of the times," said Tony Teravainen, CEO and Co-founder of STEP. "Their wage with all their allowances, E4 and below, 100% of them are below HUD's low-income level."RELATED: San Diego woman climbs out of 3,000 debt holeTeravainen says families often don't ask for help until things have gotten really bad. STEP helps prevent roughly seven evictions each month for young military families. "As a country, we don't have great financial habits. And what we see is when families enter the military we put additional burdens on them, and a lot of times this pulls them further, further into debt.
